Oh my god this is so beautiful! I'm about to dye a square of fabric and amd going to have to try this. Only suggestion I have is to change the text color from white, it's been impossible to read.
just wanted to say thanks for making this video, first tie dye I've done, didn't break out the iron and couldn't get the fold right along the curves so I made a few angled lines and folded it that way, we shall see what it looks like tonight, again thanks for your time and effort love the music had it playing while I was folding etc good stuff man ✌💚😊
Don Baker WTF DUDE! this is BULL SHIT. I did this with charcoal (just like you said on your stupid video) AND THE CHARCOAL IS DYED INTO MY TAPESTRY. NOT OKAY. looks like a child got to it! tell me how to get it out NOW! 😡😠
I did a shower curtain with this very design and colors. It is beautiful! A word of caution though...the fold can get very thick and difficult to control as a cotton curtain is so much thicker. Color away and enjoy!!!
This is absolutely gorgeous. I tried it with a flat sheet for my bed, didn't turn out quite right, but I don't think I made the curves quite wide enough. Still looks cool, but the mandala isn't there :( Thank you so much for putting this up!
I use silk because I fashion the silk into dance flags. Also, there is a class of dyes only available for silk that are fluorescent, making the silks very bright in daylight and black light.
In the very beginning, when you are ironing, the cloth is already folded. Is it folded in half once, or is in half from the side and from the top already before you actually begin the example folding?
Bonnie Andrade Sparks the first two folds are hamburger and hotdog (back from elementary school) to make it into fourths then do the triangle stuff he did.
Awesome! Just getting started with this art using the Tulip kit - not happy w/results - dingy and faded ... purchased some ash that I'm going to use w/the remaining bottles of dye - should that work ok, I think I'll purchase the Procion(sp?) starter kit ... it's the beginning of fall in my area and the temps are beginning to drop and will shortly be less than 70 in the daytime - I've read that the dyes work best when it's 70 degrees or more -- your thoughts on this?
Mr. Don Baker... You Made Me so Happy ! This is the most gorgeous tie dye Mandala I have ever seen!! I have 3 questions x Ü. ... 1-Do I have to wet the silk before applying the color 2- What kind of thread did you use to tied the silk 3-Where can I get the dye
Silk dyeing is different than cotton dyeing. I use powdered acid dyes for silk dissolved in vinegar. Steaming the silk causes the dyes to set to the silk. I tied the silk with artificial sinew available at Dharma trading. A note on the dyes - I use fluorescent dyes so they are very bright and glow in black light. They are listed in the "About" section of my website along with suppliers.
+Kat E Thanks for the nice comment Kat. I purchase my silk from www.silkconnection.com. I usually buy it by the bolt. The silk in the video is 8 momme Habotai.
+Don Baker no I have liquid fibre reactive dyes, the bottles are very solid plastic so a little hard to squeeze, that's all. thanks :) will look out for some hair dye bottles. might be easier to squeeze :)
I have a hard time with the fold! After you've drawn the line and you're trying to fold along and around it to make that fabric scrunch and stay on line... I'm going to give it another shot though because this just looks too beautiful
Can anyone tell me what the instruction reads at 6:18? I’m sure it’s not very important and I got the general idea of what to do; it’s just for for my own sanity... hehe 😅
Well Caitlin, they are kind of like that, but I sew weights into two edges around a corner to make them fly. See this video for this design in flight. ruclips.net/video/gbxN6kotVm4/видео.html
Higher heat helps with procion dyes on natural fibers. I dye cotton and bamboo and always let them heat batch in the sun (inside a plastic trash bag) for 24-48 hours to get really vibrant colors. Procion dyes are highly chemical and if you use your microwave to heat-set them you can't use it for food again, or so I've been told. I have considered getting a second microwave for dying purposes because when you microwave you save so much time heat batching!
Camila Mariano out of the hundreds different you tubes on tie-dying only this person quickly shares technic to such a important step in order to lock colors.
Second time I watched this and still caught my breath when you opened the final fold. gorgeous. what color BLUE do you use? I have Sapphire from Dharma proceon, but it's not THAT blue. Could watch this every day as a meditation.
+Any Yes, I sure do sell them. I usually make them into dance flags, but contact me if you would just like the yardage. Then you could make that into any item you might like. A skirt, a wrap, wall hanging etc. About two yards dyed and steamed $80. Completely UV reactive. don@DonBakerSilks.com. DonBakerSilks.com Available for custom tie-dyes and painted silks as well. Have a look at my galleries for a small selection of prior work. www.donbakersilks.com/News.php. Thanks for your interest and nice comments.
Rhodamine and Flavine - Acid Dyes for silk available at Dhrama Trading Company. I use true fluorescent versions of this class of dyes. Pylam Color in Tempe AZ has Violet and Blue Fluorescent.
I have tried a million times to do the bassnectar symbol and I guess I just can figure out how to fold it. Could you do a demo video if you know how? www.etsy.com/listing/202489314/bassnectar-tiedye-tee-shirt-tie-dye?ref=related-0
I am not familiar with that tie. I did have a look at it, and I suggest that you fold it in half and draw your design with something washable. Remember, you can use clamps, safety pins or even sewing to make your resist lines.
WTF DUDE! this is BULL SHIT. I did this with charcoal (just like you said on your stupid video) AND THE CHARCOAL IS DYED INTO MY TAPESTRY. NOT OKAY. looks like a child got to it! tell me how to get it out NOW! 😡😠
It is unfortunate that your results are inferior. Practice, practice. Lets go out on a limb and think about how we can come up with our very own ideas and processes, shall we?
Clear instruction, soothing music, this was a pleasure to watch and inspiring ...thank you!

Beautiful. Can't wait till I am that amazing.
This is so beautiful. Do you think this fold pattern will work on a T-shirt for a tie-dye?
thats amazing!!!
about to bang out a big 2.4x2.4m version of this. wish me luck!
You're like the Gordon Ramsay of Tie Dying! Just wow 😵
beautiful!!

Please post more of these!

Gorgeous
Awesome video! How did you fold it at first, and what is the size of your fabric?
Wow this is incredibly beautiful, I may have to start using silk. Any tips on affordable silk yardage?
Tie dye, my foot! This is clearly sorcery! 😯
FREAKING AMAZING MAN!! KUDOS!!
thanks for this video! its very inspirational
Are you beginning this piece with it folded in quarters? It is lovely😁
Oh my God! Sir! This is amazing. Can you tell me the size of the fabric?

Mr. Don Baker...
You Made Me so Happy !

I dye the silk when it is dry. I could wet the silk, but that gives a more diffused look to the colors and patterns.
This is beautiful. Thank you for posting. I am feeling drawn to the art form of dancing with these. May I ask what are the dimensions of the fabric?
Each flag is 36" x 45" and weighted in one corner to make them fly.

AMAZING
magnifique travail, vraiment très beau, merci ...
Superrrr!!!!
The Best !
Uhúúu!!!👋👋👏👏👏👏👏👏
Thanks all for the nice comments. I have been doing tie-dye on silk since 2000. Practice.
Beautiful ! thank you for sharing !
does it matter if the dye is a hot water dye or a cold water dye?
I love. Beatiful
By dance flags do you mean the type of flags that are uses for color guard???
This is beautiful! I admire your work! Where do you buy the silk fabric that was used in this video?
+Kat E Thanks for the nice comment Kat. I purchase my silk from www.silkconnection.com. I usually buy it by the bolt. The silk in the video is 8 momme Habotai.
Many Thanks!!!!!!!😁😁😁🥰🥰
this is truly amazing!!! May I ask where you get your dye from?
+Emily Chann www.donbakersilks.com/About.html See the bottom of this link
what type of bottles do you use? they look comfortable and squishy, mine give me an RSI in my hands as they are stiff
+Jennifer Tripp My dyes are listed at the bottom of this link. It sounds like you are using paints. www.donbakersilks.com/About.html
+Don Baker I got my bottles from a Sally Beauty Supply store. They are used to dye hair.
+Don Baker no I have liquid fibre reactive dyes, the bottles are very solid plastic so a little hard to squeeze, that's all. thanks :) will look out for some hair dye bottles. might be easier to squeeze :)
so beautiful. sir. hope you will upload new design pattern. take care. ☺
Congratulations, My God.Beautiful,The is absolutely amazing! You are master, I wel make my flag the same way.
Beautiful like it thanks
I have a hard time with the fold! After you've drawn the line and you're trying to fold along and around it to make that fabric scrunch and stay on line... I'm going to give it another shot though because this just looks too beautiful
I find that keeping the fabric very damp helps tons.
this is really amazing Don Baker, what dye do you use for silk?
I use silk dyes. These ones I use glow under black light and are listed with suppliers at the end of the link. www.donbakersilks.com/About.html
thanks for your response, do you use the regular silk or cotton silk. Or is it possible to dye on polyester?
Very nice! Thanks!!
amazing
bottles from Sally Beauty Supply
Sorry, one question. Can I use cotton fabric instead of silk? Please reply!
ALSO! I was wondering if I use cotton fabric, can I use rubber bands instead of sinew string?
Thank you!
Those bottles are awesome, where did you find them??
+Ben Lockhart Sally Beauty Supply. Hair dye bottles, and yes they are.
so if I'm not mistaken, its 5 fold's and the the crinkle's?
+p4b2d0 4 I think. It is folded in half, then again longwise, then two triangle folds.
Muito bonito! Muah. ;)
where on earth do you get those squeeze bottles?
I love this! How did you learn to tie dye like that?
Hermoso.
Perfect

why did he microwave it?? should I do the same with cotton fabric? beautiful work nevertheless!
+Camila Mariano heat helps set most dyes
Don Baker heat helps with the cotton set too. I let my tie dye projects sit in my car for a day or two in hot weather.
Interesting. I thought as long as they were above 70 F they would set well. Are you saying higher temp sets the dyes better?
Higher heat helps with procion dyes on natural fibers. I dye cotton and bamboo and always let them heat batch in the sun (inside a plastic trash bag) for 24-48 hours to get really vibrant colors. Love this, Tnx a lot
i love this but how do i get a full mandala mines keeps coming as a half
The piece I start with is one piece folded in half, so when you open it it is a full mandala.
Also, if you use a perfect square, your results will be more "square"
Second time I watched this and still caught my breath when you opened the final fold. gorgeous. what color BLUE do you use? I have Sapphire from Dharma proceon, but it's not THAT blue. Could watch this every day as a meditation.

Try washing in the silk in anhydrous ammonia. It may not get the charcoal out, but it is a great substitute for bullshit
That is beautiful!!!
