@@jocelynnelson246 I've seen him referred to as the embodiment of internalised queerphobia, and while I think he is that, I think it's even more specific. He is one of these gay men who idealise macho hypermasculinity, and who laugh and look down on gay men they see as feminine. "No twinks allowed" kind of men. It's misogyny within the gay community, where anything seen as too woman-like is dismissed as not being gay enough, because, you know, gay men are into men, and not into women or women-like people, or something. This is not only about gayness, it's about his own gender identity as a man attracted to men. Izzy is dismissive of everything soft and tender in Ed, telling him (and it's notable too that it's a white man saying it to a brown man) it is his nature to be brutal and violent, and forcing that yoke of toxic hypermasculinity back down onto him. He is struggling with his own masculinity, and so is projecting it out onto other people's masculinity and in a certain measure onto their gender identity.
He’s got an “if I can’t have him, nobody can” kind of mindset- he’s perfectly fine enabling Ed’s unhealthy coping mechanisms and pushing Ed to be who he wants him to be without regard for what’s best for Ed or what he himself wants.
It’s like izzy prefers what Ed once was not realizing it’s something he wasn’t proud of while stede pushes Ed to move forward and change for the better
The silk representing Ed's heart, his face when he thinks of Stede and realises he has no choice but to let it go, the silk flying off into the sea forever and the way he acts once its gone...its so well done
What gets me is that I think Blackbeard had been coping rather well. Turning his pain into lyrics in a blanket fort, complimenting the other crew members, making a talent show. He had basically become Stede. But then Izzy rolled up back with his bullshit and that was the push over the edge 💀

even though this scene drove me to tears. blackbeard doesn’t know any other way to cope with things he can’t have. he goes back to his old brutal ways as a coping mechanism. i love the music in this scene.
Not to mention he actually believes he doesn't *deserve* any of those "soft" things like gentle fabrics, or tender feelings. So he says "That's my own fault for believing anything else. I'm not meant to be happy anyway. Not making that mistake again." So he gets rid of everything of Stede in the ship, including Stede's crew. But he can't get rid of the painting, he can't move out of Stede's room, or his ship, and he can't stop using Stede's black carvat around his neck. He cannot just forget about him, but he will try, even if it kills him. Shit, now I made myself sad!! D8
The secret auxiliary wardrobe is still there…we didn’t see any of the clothes being thrown out, only books and knickknacks. So Lucius is probably hiding…in the closet. I can’t with this show 😂
That would be fabulously accurate! And Jim is still on the ship as well, so they can help one another too! But I noticed very quickly that Ed very clearly did NOT reveal the secret closet to Izzy, even if we see the crew taking books from the exact spot where the entrance is!! The first thing Ed is shown about that room, in wich he continues to live in, is where the secret closet is! And I am pretty sure he simply didn't have the heart to get rid of it, nor to even open it again, just as he kept the Lighthouse painting, and Stede's black cravat on his neck... It's a nice way to physically show that his feelings for Stede are not gone, just locked inside the walls, but Ed still can't ignore them completely.
Ed seems to have been fairly receptive to Lucius and the others helping him process things in a healthier way than he’s used to, but then Izzy got to him. I wish the crew had gone through with their planned mutiny.

Some of us are like that even if we haven't physically murdered anyone. I've certainly said, "I am the Kraken" to myself when reflecting on some of my failed relationships. Irredeemable, unforgivable, unlovable.
It's the most interesting scene character wise. At the heart of the issue is Edward's relationship with Izzy. Edward doesn't completely like Izzy. He thinks his first mate can be a bit of a killjoy and a dick, but there's still an undeniable connection between them. And when you consider Izzy's loyalty to Blackbeard, because Izzy practically worships him, AND when you realize how Ed was emotionally lonely for most of his life, it makes sense the two would form a close relationship. It's not a friendship (at least not a good one), and in many ways their dynamic is painful and harmful to each individual. However, Edward comes to rely on Izzy for the simple matter of Izzy's availability to him, and Izzy is able to exert his most powerful influence over Ed when Edward is most vulnerable. Blackbeard isn't Edward. Blackbeard CAN'T be Edward, otherwise Izzy will abandon him. Edward was heartbroken after his Breakup with Stede, but he doesn't need to worry about such problems when he's Blackbeard. All the pressure on Ed creates a great influence on him, to the point where his choice of self belief goes as far to abandon the pain of his heartbreak entirely. He is the Kraken, but he's also a sniveling little boy. It's a tragic tale of the power of self perception, and what we're capable of doing to ourselves when we're truly at rock bottom.
I blame Izzy for Ed turning back to Blackbeard. Ed was in the process of healing when he was around the crew. He had Lucius write down lyrics he wrote and cried in front of him and Lucius honestly tried to comfort him. He sang his song in front of everyone and nobody insulted him and they cheered. Izzy told Ed he should of let the English kill him, that he's weak for being in pain, and that he doesn't give a shit about Edward (an actual person) and that he only serves Blackbeard (a fabricated image that Ed makes explicity clear makes him miserable and he wants to escape that life). The last shot of Ed in the show is him crying alone in an empty room and Izzy is probably smiling about next door. Stede hurt him but he only planted the seed. Izzy watered it and made his pain grow. He's horrible and I don't know how anyone can like or defend him.
Blackbeard chose to murder Lucius, and though Izzy might have enjoyed having his toe cut off, he did not consent to it. The story has led you to identify with an abuser, and blame the abused. If Izzy were a woman, this would be extremely obvious textbook misogyny. The pressure on men to perform toxic masculinity does not come from their abused partners. It generally comes more broadly from their environment. We lose out on this aspect of realism so we can keep the crew sympathetic, so all of this characterisation of a pressure to act more masculine falls on one character: Izzy. It's Izzy's fault, because he's too masochistic 🙄. Edward needs to be sympathetic, the crew needs to be sympathetic, but we want to have this hot scene where a guy gets his toe cut off, so it needs to be the victim's fault. I think this is problematic writing, but I overlook it because this is the hottest thing ive ever watched.
When y'all were screaming about episode 10, I was genuinely scared that Ed or Stede got killed off or something. I'm so fucking happy it's about this absolute drama instead and that there's hope.
"I finally have what I wanted, so... Woohoo look how happy I am oh fuck what have I actually donemyfoothurtsashellbutIcan'tadmitwakinguptheKrakenwasnotthesmartestideaIeverhadsolookhowhappyIamboys" kind of giggle, I guess.
Sweet unimaginable Jesus - the *leather* outfit. That is a very good look on Taika Teach. Most any other thought I was having has fled my brain at the sight. Still sad about the books, though. Could he not have just crated them up and put them in the hold? Why the books?? Big sad.
@Tara Allen I keep thinking that if Blackbeard fights Stede he'll stab him on the left side. (What has this show done to me to make me see that as a sign of love😅)
I remember seeing someone mention that it took multiple moments, the conversation, and tying it up altogether in the montage for stede to realize he was in love with Ed while for Ed it just took that one night for him to realize he’s in love
Could someone please explain to me why I keep replaying this scene?! I cry every single time. I feel physically ill. But I keep watching it. Damn this show!!😭😭
I know we all need lucius to be alive and I believe he is, but the significant of his apparant death is insane. Izzy Hands had truly wanted him dead throughout the show but can't really go through with it without everyone else's approval. Lucius mocks even the idea that Izzy could kill him. The Kraken, though? He knows Lucius is beloved and that killing him could risk mutiny but Ed is so self destructive at this point he does it anyway without care. He is the real deal, an actual pirate, and loathing every bit of it. Ed is a sad man, but a truly dangerous sad man.
Everything would've worked out on its own if Izzy minded his own business... I still feel very sorry for Ed and think he needs lots of hugs. *I think Izzy also needs affection and has confused it with pain for WAY TOO LONG.*
the song playing in the background is reverie by Debussy and when I heard it for the first time in this scene, I had to learn it. Now I've performed it many times :)
I do love Izzy and I think it's funny that we have to keep pointing out that it's okay to like/love toxic characters and what they contribute to the story. It's obvious that Izzy has feelings for Blackbeard. He completely fell for the dangerous persona Ed was living as and wishes he was still that guy. I think Izzy got off on being the right-hand man of the world's most famous and feared pirate. It gave him power and a sense of self-worth. At the same time he wants to be the only one who knows Ed and the only one to address him as Edward. I think he wants that intimacy. Then he has to watch Ed show his real self to Stede and then to Stede's whole crew. Izzy is obviously jealous that soft Ed is no longer a secret only he knows. And there's less Blackbeard so Izzy isn't getting that high from working on behalf of a powerful man. He is angry and deeply repressed. I think it frustrated him to see how easy things are between Edward and Stede. He def took his frustration out on Lucius. He was most likely jealous of him too and how free and open Lucius is about his sexuality. So yeah. Izzy adds a richness to the story and I think it's great. Will he redeemed? Will his own repressed emotions be his downfall?
@@n.y.174 honestly?? I hope he doesn’t redeem. I hate when toxic characters do that. Sure, it’s great to become a great person at the end of it, it’s great to teach a morale, but I think that in some context it just completely changes a character’s personality. Izzy was gonna kill Stede. He might have missed the important bits, but if Ed hadn’t taught Stede how to do that, Izzy would have killed him. He went out of his way to ally with the English navy and kill Stede FOR A SECOND TIME. I don’t think he can ever accept that Stede is good for Ed, and if David Jenkins changed that, all his character would lose its meaning. Instead I would love more info about his past. What caused him to be like this and all that. Anyway, I agree with you. We love toxic character because they add so much to the story. We’re all angsty bitches deep down.
So, I was looking up the name Lucius and it means light. And Lucius has the been the source of light onboard, helping Stede with his feelings and the rest of the crew clearly care about him a lot. And he was the one most likely to help Ed deal with his heartbreak, until Izzy pushed him over the edge and goes back to being Blackbeard again. And after Lucius seemingly dies (not!) there’s a clear lack of light and happiness on the Revenge. So, I guess what I’m saying is, he snuffed out the light? 🕯🗡
10th episode broke me😭 For now I believe that Ed and Stede both sailed to China together, Lucious with Pete and Olu is the Captain of "Revenge". At least 'til they announce second season, I watch that season and get happiest of fucking happy endings. That said I'm off to ao3😁
ed made it clear he doesnt want to go back to the old days, biting the heads off turtles, making someone eat their own toe, but after stede "left" (srsly ed didnt you think ur bf might be in trouble when he didnt show up???) he went back to the old days
I don't know if you still take request, but could you show scenes with Jim, like the one where they confront Spanish Jackie or the scene where stede wake up after being stabbed and talk with ed in ep 1x4 I think? Thank you for doing these videos anyway!
I feel like if we get another season Izzy is going to make a move on Ed he already touched his face when Ed called him a dog he sees that Ed is being Blackbeard he’s into it and Ed is Vulnerable so…I don’t want it to happen but I feel like it is
I fucking love this show but this scene is just so funny to me LMAO the look on Ed's face before he pushes Lucius over and "don't forget to chew" cdnbfouweuf

Just watched this 2 weeks ago and love this show so much and honestly I don’t believe Lucius is dead since he was pushed over the boat and you can literally see the hanging rope move telling us that Lucius grabbed it while still hitting the water and we all remembered that izzy won’t follow Ed and that he said my captain is Blackbeard so maybe Ed doing this as a front for izzy to make him think he’s Blackbeard so he’ll listen and maybe he marooned half the crew on that island so izzy believes he Blackbeard and Ed probably picked that island maybe 🤔 it’s a known spot where ships pass by I mean we all know he still has feelings for stede cause Ed wearing his black cravat from episode 4 and has his painting 🖼 and he’s on his bed crying I bet heartbroken and wondering what happened to him and we all saw him tossing his books furnitures but we didn’t see his clothes being toss from the auxiliary wardrobe since Ed is the only one that knows about it no one not even izzy knows about it only stede and Ed and then we have Jim stowed away somewhere on the ship who knows maybe with Lucius as well this just a theory but honestly it almost makes sense

He had a huge panic over not knowing whether he did the right thing, leaving his family the way that he did and so he went back home to try and repair the damage, only to realise that they (his wife and kids) were getting along just fine without him. It was a good character growth arc that he needed to come to terms with his feelings toward Ed (and his future as a pirate).

He is the Kraken, but he's also a sniveling little boy. It's a tragic tale of the power of self perception, and what we're capable of doing to ourselves when we're truly at rock bottom.
s2 needs izzy’s backstory that man loves being dominated too much 😭😭😭
I blame Izzy for Ed turning back to Blackbeard.
I cannot put into words how much i love this sequence
Doings gods work with these clips
thank you 🙏
When y'all were screaming about episode 10, I was genuinely scared that Ed or Stede got killed off or something.
I'm so fucking happy it's about this absolute drama instead and that there's hope.
2:45 "Blackbeard is himself again... hah.."
YoOoOoOoOoo what's up with that giggle😳😳
He's probably not used to being happy
"I finally have what I wanted, so... Woohoo look how happy I am oh fuck what have I actually donemyfoothurtsashellbutIcan'tadmitwakinguptheKrakenwasnotthesmartestideaIeverhadsolookhowhappyIamboys" kind of giggle, I guess.
Like, look at his eyes, not his mouth. He is trying to smile, but his eyes are screaming in horror.
@@rosselanor Exactly. It's the beginning of his psychotic break with reality.
Sweet unimaginable Jesus - the *leather* outfit. That is a very good look on Taika Teach.
Most any other thought I was having has fled my brain at the sight. Still sad about the books, though. Could he not have just crated them up and put them in the hold? Why the books?? Big sad.
a part of me hopes that Ed kept some of Stede's things in the secret room.
@Tara Allen I keep thinking that if Blackbeard fights Stede he'll stab him on the left side. (What has this show done to me to make me see that as a sign of love😅)
That moment when the dissonant chord plays
Oh my god I shuddered in the most devastating dread!
And the *dead look in his eyes!* So much was so wrong with him and it chilled me to my core!
SUCH a good choice to use avalanche for this scene....
THANK YOU FOR MAKING MY DAY
C O M E D Y S H O W
I remember seeing someone mention that it took multiple moments, the conversation, and tying it up altogether in the montage for stede to realize he was in love with Ed while for Ed it just took that one night for him to realize he’s in love
This sequence phisically pains me
Could someone please explain to me why I keep replaying this scene?! I cry every single time. I feel physically ill. But I keep watching it. Damn this show!!😭😭
It's phenomenal acting and drama...
It's extremely hot
He is in so much pain yet he secretly totally gets off that, i am sure lmao
“Do it for the vine!”
Mfs in 2013:
STOPP 💀
... this was supposed to be a comedy about gay pirates. Why am I having to discuss this scene with my therapist?
The fact that before the trip back Ed said he didn’t want to go back to drinking and feeding honks toes for a laugh foreshadows this scene
Why do I do this to myself?? It hurts so bad!! FUCK!!
But it's such good acting and drama! AND TAIKA IS SO AMAZING IN THIS!
it's ridiculous how many times I've watched this scene!
a a a a it HURTS
Don’t worry, Lucius is gonna survive, but in the most ridiculous way. I have hope
Rat boy!
The use of "Avalanche" by Leonard Cohen is genius.
Nooooo not the books
That hurts ne in a fundamental spiritual level!!
Everything would've worked out on its own if Izzy minded his own business... I still feel very sorry for Ed and think he needs lots of hugs.
*I think Izzy also needs affection and has confused it with pain for WAY TOO LONG.*
This scene hurts so much.........however...........I really , really hope there is some sort of fuckery going on
Latest obsession, whoops
the song playing in the background is reverie by Debussy and when I heard it for the first time in this scene, I had to learn it. Now I've performed it many times :)
We all hate Izzy but at the same time we all love him
Honestly, I used to despise him but the more I think about his character the more profoundly sad he seems. He’s literally giving me brainrot.
Well I certainly don't love him
he became hot again, i have to be on izzy's side this time
Idk that look with only Stede's red robe looked really nice to me!
@@wandanemer2630 The robe looks really good on him too, but there is something to be said for the new Blackbeard😉
Let's talk about the use of Avalanche here and in Black Sails, with the themes of monsters, transformations and othering.
YES. I haven't stopped thinking about this since I saw the episode. It parallels Flint's transformation SO well.
IZZY MY GUY WHY WERE YOU SHIVVERING WHEN HE FED YOU YOUR TOE
I'm still not over this
10th episode broke me😭
For now I believe that Ed and Stede both sailed to China together, Lucious with Pete and Olu is the Captain of "Revenge".
Noooo the books!
This scene hurt me again and again. What the pain you bring to your captain. Izzy-Dizzy.
can't wait for ed's post breakup rampage next season, i think we all deserve a little more unhinged blackbeard, as a treat
On one hand, this Is really heartbeaking.
On the other, Emo Blackbeard with Leonard Cohen Music Is Hot as Fuck
god im coming up
That was a thank you sir moment if I ever fucking seen one
I don't know if you still take request, but could you show scenes with Jim, like the one where they confront Spanish Jackie or the scene where stede wake up after being stabbed and talk with ed in ep 1x4 I think? Thank you for doing these videos anyway!
uploaded!!
It's painful to see Izzy's toxic(masochist?) attachment to the Blackbeard persona.
Anyone else is both crying over the angst and thinking that Ed’s fucking hot ?
this was so sad :(
I love that this is the second Waititi project with a Leonard Cohen song! (The partisan was in Hunt for the Wilderpeople)
My heart hurts
This is the first time that a man getting off on being fed his own toe has been shown on film. #RepresentationWin! (what KIND of representation, I have no idea and frankly I'm afraid to find out.)
p.s. this song fucking rules
I like him evil lol he's hot 🔥
I'm so sad 😭
Izzy screaming at the others like "LISTEN MAN, I CAN'T AFFORD TO LOSE ANY MORE PARTS OF ME. HURRY THE FUCK UP"
this song took me out when I first watched this scene.
perfect song with perfect imagery to suit it
Could someone explain to me why did he change the flag? Was it supposted to reflect Ed's love or something
but why does he push lucius over the side? 😭
most likely bc lucius is the only other person he’s been able to be vulnerable with. also bc he was the one that kinda pushed ed and stede together!!
@@hootowllps i seeeee. thank you!
Just watched this 2 weeks ago and love this show so much and honestly I don’t believe Lucius is dead since he was pushed over the boat and you can literally see the hanging rope move telling us that Lucius grabbed it while still hitting the water and we all remembered that izzy won’t follow Ed and that he said my captain is Blackbeard so maybe Ed doing this as a front for izzy to make him think he’s Blackbeard so he’ll listen and maybe he marooned half the crew on that island so izzy believes he Blackbeard and Ed probably picked that island maybe 🤔 it’s a known spot where ships pass by I mean we all know he still has feelings for stede cause Ed wearing his black cravat from episode 4 and has his painting 🖼 and he’s on his bed crying I bet heartbroken and wondering what happened to him and we all saw him tossing his books furnitures but we didn’t see his clothes being toss from the auxiliary wardrobe since Ed is the only one that knows about it no one not even izzy knows about it only stede and Ed and then we have Jim stowed away somewhere on the ship who knows maybe with Lucius as well this just a theory but honestly it almost makes sense
petition for s2 to have izzy redemption arc + get over ed + find someone new to obsess over
Man, I'm torn up now. I want to watch this show but at the same time I'm terrified to do it :') help!
Update! I watched... I loved it to the core, but at the same time... why that ending exists???? :')
DO IT!
The ending is so painful because there was such fun and fuzzy feelings before that moment!
It's hilarious and cute beyond, and an extraordinary use of good representation. The pain is really worth it.
@@wandanemer2630 Yeah I decided to watch it... Goddammit... that ending... why? Just... why??
At the same time I loved Stede and Mary's reconciliation... GODDAMMIT STEDE! YOU LEFT YOUR MAN BEHIND!!
But yeah I loved it🥲💕💕
i mean... it's not rly a happy turn of events...but I also love emo taika so idk. not complaining
I didn't watch it, only fragments, did Stede leave Ed? Why?
He had a huge panic over not knowing whether he did the right thing, leaving his family the way that he did and so he went back home to try and repair the damage, only to realise that they (his wife and kids) were getting along just fine without him. It was a good character growth arc that he needed to come to terms with his feelings toward Ed (and his future as a pirate).
@@filmblooms thank you. Did Stede return to Ed in the end?
@@AloutkaKazawa :(
@@AloutkaKazawa Historically speaking, no. I’m sure they’ll take a completely different direction with this show though
@@AloutkaKazawa He was on his way but met his crew, first. I think the main arc of the second season will be about them clashing swords (literally and figuratively) before they reach an understanding ;-;; an enemies to lovers again kinda thing~~
What number of episode was this?
I think it's s1ep10
