  • The journey of 1000 miles begins with one step...anyway - edit 3: fully edited now, shit will make more sense than before at least
Funny story: I watched the new Double Dragon trailer and got very excited because Yukes was developing! The same Yukes that made Demolish Fist! OMG this trailer looks a lot like Demolish Fist, from Yukes! Yukes must be using the same engine for sure, I am expert. I even got in the mood to play Demolish Fist and maybe make a vid celebrating the DD trailer with a credit of DemoFist.
Except DemoFist is made by Dimps. And it's WAYYYY better than I remember, partly cause a 1cc vid taught me how wrong I've been playing this game. I've incorporated a lot more Superjoy spam and am on my way to mastering the highly jank directional attack system.
The Highly Jank Directional Attack System (HJDAS) affords you certain crowd control moves by pressing a cardinal direction+attack while blocking (game has a block button.) The jank is that the moves are relative to how your character is facing and you can imagine it gets weird and ambiguous at odd angles! So to attack guys behind you while you are facing right, hold block and press left+attack. but if your character's back is to the screen, you have to hold block+down to do that same attack.
I don't know if doing it the other way would be any better (non-relative, always the same move when you press block+a direction.) but that's not really the issue...
The actual issue here is that you can face diagonal too...therein lies the jank, particularly when 10 guys are around you. However, nothing that can't be figured out with practice...or just substitute with superjoy. Maybe try to avoid the HJDAS as much as possible? Just spitballing ideas...
One other thing is the block button in this game is akin to the Shift button in Slashout and Spikeout--aka a utility button that you need to use artfully to stay alive. The block button in DemoFist is not nearly as intuitive as the Shift button (which is just strafe movement.) It's definitely weird jank that you have to master the particularities of. Guys can attack you from behind while you're blocking, but when you're facing diagonal, sometimes it blocks what appears to be a clean hit from behind.
Finally, Block+Jump is superjoy, but Block+Attack+Jump uses the meter for that uh...what do you even call that?!! [edit: vertigo attack.] It lets you attack almost as fast as you can mash, so I do an alternating finger mash for it and destroy things, that's all i know. See: the boss fight
edit: I do record at 60fps, but this game has the distinction of being one of the only 30fps 3D arcade beat em ups (aside from Die Hard which gets a pass for being so damn early). Of course, there are only about 8 of those in existence btw, even counting different versions like original Spikeout vs Final Edition or Asian Dynamite vs. Deka 2. i just named half of them. There's also Zombie Revenge, Die Hard, Demo Fist, and Spiker's Battle....I might be forgetting something. But still, yukes plz
Edit 2: yeah they got Paul Eiding to announce stages and boss names, it's the best
Anyway, done writing for now, enjoy.
Here is the 1cc vid that inspired me - it may be the same one from Nico (big RIP jeez):

HJDAS made 2003 a great year.

I always found it weird that it ran at 30FPS, but then again oddly a lot of Atomiswave games only ran at 30; I'm pretty sure literally the only ones that don't are the SNK games (except Metal Slug 6) and Fist of the North Star. It's odd stuff.
Also it still amuses me that this game's Vanessa is a very close lookalike to Vanessa from KOF; I still wonder if it was partially intentional, even moreso since Dimps were ex-SNK folks.
Nice to see you still doing good, dude!

I just uploaded a vid of kov 7 stars, which is 60fps, as well as dolphin blue and maybe gingi storm or whatever that's called?
If I could wave a wand, this is the game I'd make 60fps...😢

@@broy8172 I admit I forgot about Dolphin Blue (kinda funny since that was Dimps too); it's interesting as well since that is 2.5D unlike MS6 being full 2D.
Coincidentally Jingi Storm was one of the first games I thought of too, but then I remembered that one wasn't on Atomiswave, it was on NAOMI; I likely got it mixed up with one of the unreleased games it spawned from (Force Five) being an Atomiswave title, and IIRC that one was 60, so it counts.
I can't wait for more uploads.
