SWEELINCK: 'MEIN JUNGES LEBEN HAT EIN END' | GERBEN BUDDING - JACOBIKERK UTRECHT

Gerben Budding plays 'Mein junges Leben hat ein End', by the Dutch composer Jan Pieterszoon Sweelinck. This year (2021) we honor Sweelinck, who died four hundred years ago - October 16, 1621. Budding played this work during the organ concert on the magnificent Garrels/Meere organ in the Jacobikerk in Utrecht.
The song is about a still young man who feels the end of his life approaching. He bids farewell to the world in which he has committed many sins, and commits his wife and children to God's protection.

Mein arme Seele soll behend,
Scheiden von mein Leib.
Mein Leben kann nicht lenger stehn,
's Ist schwach, fürwar, es muss vergehn,

Gerben Budding (1987) is internationally active as a concert organist and church musician. He is director of music of the Sint-Janskerk in Gouda with its beautiful Moreau organ from 1736 and vesper organist at the Utrecht Domkerk with its famous Bätz organ from 1831.
He received education on the conservatory in Utrecht. There he got his Bachelor and Masters’ degree Organ with improvisation (both summa cum laude), a first-grade qualification as church musician and a Bachelor and Masters’ degree Choir Direction (with honours).
He won the First Prize at the international organ competition ‘Agati-Tronci’ in Pistoia (Italy), the second prize at the international Schnitger competition in Alkmaar, the Litaize Award at the international César Franck competition in Haarlem and the Public Award at the improvisation competition in Dudelange (Luxemburg).
