SX removed the insulation protecting inside the engine compartment to save weight. It looks like they had an ongoing fire in the engine compartment as well as a burn through or fire inside a compartment attached to the outside of the rocket. The rocket may have landed but it's useless except for the information gathered. Where there's smoke there's fire and that rocket smoked heavily for a long time. Also, the rocket was directed at more of an angle than I would expect at landing and probably over heated the tower. I've thought all along that they should be using a separate landing tower or landing apparatus consisting of "two" towers with no angular changes required. Less damage to the launch complex and the launch/landing tower. Additional insulation and further use of the hot staging device will reduce the already limited launch capacity. That said, this is still the most important development in the recent history of rocketry. When used as a single use rocket, the super heavy is far more powerful than any rocket ever successfully launched. It looks like it will be reliable too.
1. correct ish, shielding was moved inside engines. 2. "fire inside engine compartment" was plasma formation due to hypersonic shock heating (this is fine stainless steel can handle those temps) 3. "burn through or fire inside a compartment attached to outside of the rocket" - nah that was gaseous methane being vented (fuel line purge to prevent pressure buildup) and catching fire immediately outside the booster. (even if fire began within those fuel lines its still fine as raptors have a preburner so fuel lines are built to handle those temps.) 4. You can absolutely have smoke without fire however the "smoke" u saw after landing was gaseous methane and oxygen being vented (again to prevent pressure buildup post landing.) 5. I agree with u regarding the fact that the engine plume being directed towards the tower would be a cause for concern but i believe the camera angle was misleading in this regard. Looking at other angles it seems the final translation towards the chopsticks was diagonal (not directly towards tower.) 6. The "angular changes" you want to remove actually exist as a result of measures to protect the tower and other gse. Booster targets a spot a few hundred feet away from the tower until about T+6:40 (8:38 in the video) where u can see the booster lean towards the tower for final translation towards chopsticks. This final translation only occurs once the booster and tower systems are happy that the catch can be succesfully executed; if these systems do not commit to the landing then the booster will land at the previously mentioned location a few hundred feet away from the tower and the resulting explosion will be minimal due the booster being almost completely out of fuel. 7. I do not understand your point about hot staging reducing launch capacity. Afaik hot staging increases performance by reducing gravity losses (+ its good for reliability as it keeps fuel settled at the bottom of the tanks during meco and boostback making relight of the middle 10 raptors on booster and all engines on ship much more reliable)

Musk claims there was an issue with pipe deformation that caused one fire while another report says that the fire appearing up the side of the rocket was purposely done and expected - flushing. I would reserve judgement on the engine compartment fire until the results are published. It was more than heat that caused that smoke.

What's not normal is some engine nozzles on the outer ring were bent and one helium cylinder overheated and exploded, but that could be easily fixed with more insulation
