Mississippi is actually a lovely place to live. People are very friendly, the countryside is beautiful, there is lots of great food and music. It's just that there isn't a real wide variety of things to do there. Apart from college football, hunting, fishing, going to see bands, and going out to eat, there just isn't much going on. You will have to make your own fun. If you have friends who already live there, you should be fine. If you move there without any friends, well, you are going to have to make some before things start to pick up.
True but there are areas of the state with extreme poverty, corruption, and crime and it’s hard to avoid in most rural and inner city areas of the state
Ely, Nevada. Had an opportunity to buy a small cinder block home there, 25 years ago. $5000. All that was needed was updated electricity and cleaning out a room full of fish heads and parts...that had been there for awhile. No joke. Really. We really considered it, but ended up leaving Nevada. There are 2 parks near by. Cave Lake State Park and Great Basin National Park. Both really nice parks.
Love these !Been searching for Geezerville ( my imaginary town where folks are kindly and tip their hats and use turn signals) for some time now. Here's a great start !
Briggs: Your idea of a small town cracked me up - that’s a small city to me. I live in a really small town of about 2000-2500. I have to drive to the next towns over to do any ‘big’ shopping, but they are only 20-30 minutes away. Really big shopping is 45-60 minutes away, but in both cases - I only go if needed. Saves a lot of money, too, as a house can be rented or bought much cheaper than the larger towns listed here.
This is exactly my scenario now. I’ve been living and working in downtown Nashville for the last 2 years; but since Covid I’ve been working from home for 5 months. With how expensive Nashville houses are I am hoping that maybe one day soon I can take advantage and move to a more affordable area!
Great videos Briggs! Love the info. Have lived in Providence RI, Boston and Philly. I’m now good here in the suburbs of Atlanta. Mortgage only $700 with 4 acres.
Briggs, when You talk about internet Service Providers, (ISP's) , I suggest also including what is available from Cell Phone Carriers like Verizon, AT&T, Tmobile, and so on.
Remember climate affects cost of living. You have to heat and cool your home. Great videos. As a truck driver I've usually been to most of these places.
Briggs should do a monthly best town to move to (generally speaking) based on economy, things to do, cost of living...it's broad but I think it would get a lot of foot traffic for the channel. subscribed two years ago. My grandma and I tuned in daily until she passed away, she loved the channel. Great stuff as always!! Great episode, despite the lack of my fat cousin horse sound effect jokes hah!!

Glad to see Ely on this list! It's one of my favorite towns in rural Nevada and I love going there. Only four hours from Las Vegas but that is relative. If you are use to driving in rural Nevada and know where the NHP usually are you can make it in a little over three hours. In Nevada terms that is not much. Sometime it may take you over an hour to get from east to west in Las Vegas. But I have to cite one thing about Ely - internet is not very good and I doubt that it ever will be. Good job Briggs!
These are great and very timely. They would be even greater if you could have the name of the town displayed on the screen as you talk about each place. Retirees and/or remote workers need that information in order to research further before renting a U-Haul. Personally I would love it if you could also include the population. Do more of these for sure.
Briggs, I loved the video and have a request/suggestion. How about the top 20 to 25 fishing towns in the USA. A nice place where a retired man could fish all day everyday and never run out of places to fish or fish to catch. Hopefully they would also be affordable places as well for a person living on SS. I would love to find a place like that with lakes with catfish, crappie, bass, bluegill and maybe even some rivers and streams to go fly fishing in. With some beautiful countryside in the area and lots of trees and wildlife. Please include housing costs, cost of living, crime rates and any other information you think people would want to know. Thanks Briggs and keep the good videos rolling.
You should mention some more towns between Austin and Waco. There's alot of cheep real estate in relatively safe cities between the two. Belton, Gatesville and Salado etc
If you really don’t like people, then a small town where everybody’s up in your business is the LAST place you’ll want to be. Much easier to find yourself being left alone in peace in a large population. I speak from experience.
Love your videos Briggs. My bf and I watch them all the time. We live in a small town called clintwood va. We have a population of about 1300 people as of 2018. It's a nice place to live and raise a family. Just not a lot to do. Rent isn't that bad. Homes are kinda cheap especially out of town limits. Nice little country town.

I can't believe Huntington WV or Ashland KY didn't make this one. There are move in ready homes in a few areas there for less than 50k. Not the greatest places of course but they are there.
Hey Briggs, I hate to correct you on anything, as your videos are pretty seamless for the most part, and idk if anyone else has pointed this out. But from 3:14 to 3:20, those two buildings are actually located in Martinsville, Indiana, where I currently reside. The first one was one of the middle schools where I went, and the second is some sort of community building here in town. Also, at 3:39 that's an image of main street from a few years ago. Probably an easily made mistake considering there's like...3 or more Martinsvilles in the country. Other than that I love your videos, keep it up dude.
I'm from Mt. Shasta, and always wondered why you have never mentioned it; the good, or if you can find a bad. Most people don't know anything about California at Oregon border
I do. The moment you go over Siskyou Pass into Oregon, the sunshine turns to clouds, fog, or rain! I like Mt Shasta, and Redding, Redlands, and a lot of the towns on 99, like Chico and Gilroy. Mostly because of the weather. 50 years in Washington, and I CANT STAND THE RAIN!!!! I'm stuck in the old trailer that Dad left to me and my sister, and on a pension. I'd move to Ely, Nevada in a heartbeat if I could.
My bf and I use to live in Fort Madison Iowa. Its horrible the whole area is bad nothing at all to do in and around the area. But it is dirt cheap and for many reasons Love your channel!!
Wow, my mom and her mom’s side of the family is from Burlington, Iowa. I know all about Ft. Madison, the Amana colonies, and Mount Pleasant. Sadly, my grandmother, years ago, commented that the whole area was dying on the vine. I don’t know how it’s now as West Burlington was nonexistent when they lived there. Also, have been greatly enjoying your content for years now and am glad the channel is growing. Btw, was watching a video from a fellow RUclipsr who has similar content and the video was about where I currently live, Pennsylvania. One of the comments left on the vid was from someone who mentioned Honesdale and that it was his hometown. That made me think of your channel. Anyways, thanks again for another great video, much appreciation from central Pennsylvania!
In some aspects Benton Harbor is actually worse than Detroit in crime considering its small size. I know people still love to bash Detroit but at least it has a great downtown/urban center and a beautiful waterfront.

BURLINGTON IS MY HOMETOWN!!!! I love it there and I want to move back but the job market is not good. I’d love to start a business there and bring some jobs in...
If you guys think Briggs is suggesting that you should move to a certain place you are mistaken, it appears to me (IMHO) that he's only giving you the options that are available for any given topic. For example, if you check out his vid from a year ago about places you should definitely not move to Benton Harbor is on that list and he explains why.
Just a FYI- when he was talking about Benton Harbor being cheep and having things to do, at the end he said they have some other problems; those "other problems" are quite significant. You have been warned. I will say this: it is better to live in Benton Harbor than Highland Park, MI. Then again, living in Kabul, Afghanistan is better than Highland Park, MI.
A problem with Tupelo, MS, aside from the fact it's in MS, is that there have been a good 25 tornadoes there since 1950 and 5 of them were major tornadoes. So having a storm shelter would be nice, but expect to pay a fortune for insurance due to the higher than average tornado risk
The taxes are so high in gig harbor it's nuts. When we were in highschool you didn't say that we lived there because we were known as country bumpkins.
I love small towns, thank you, Briggs! Can you do a regional one, say, do one on the best small towns in the Midwest then Southeast, West and East...I'm in Chicago and wanna leave after this virus masking nonsense. Please help, I need a get out of jail card soon. We actually are refugees from Illinois and want to go to smaller, affordable, safe towns with decent schools and great housing options with lower taxes! You're the man to give us the best options.
Yeah! Burlington Iowa. My birth home town. Really not a bad town. If you can handle the Big Muddy floods. The annual May Fly infestation, drug culture, and small tavern on every corner in every neighborhood, intoxicated bar hoppers barfing in you rose garden on .50 cent draft night, brutal winters, and mosquito swarms! But other than that. It's a great place to be born!
Pittsburg kansas now has some of THE fastest speeds with a local place called CrawKan gigabit internet for $70 a month. we do have some great job opportunities! There are good old but great condition housing for less than 100k
I lived in Richmond for 25 years. There are some great things and some not so great things. Beautiful architecture. Earlham College. Satellite campuses for IU and Purdue. Two museums that each have a mummy (possibly three, but I know for sure about two). Multiple parks in town, a Madonna of the Trail statue in Glenn Miller park.
@@Miklos82 I have been gone for years, but I know that meth and heroin were definitely issues, as well as unemployment and crime. Richmond has a strange demographic with the history of Quakers (liberal leaning) and the "good ole boys" mentality. Kind of a Jekyll/Hyde small city.
I’m retiring soon and feel like I have to leave the US to enjoy a good life without living in poverty on my social security money. Your videos give me hope that I can stay in the US. I love oregon, but it’s too expensive to live on a fixed income. Thank you.
I have to pass a cow pasture 2 of 3 ways out of my neighborhood. Closest place to get food is a 24hr Arby's 12 min away. I live in a modular house around 2000 sq ft. 1.25 acres. 540 per month mortgage and 140 insurance 7 months per year. My power bill ranges 220-375. Like it cool in summer at 72°f and not chilli short winter 70°f. I live in Lugoff South Carolina.
I think this could be a trilogy of videos, but wait until after 2020, knowing how much of the country remains might be smart. At this rate I expect Godzilla to attack and the aliens to land.
Benton Harbor? Yeesh, really using some creative license with that pick. I can think of 10 small towns in Michigan off the top of my head that would have been a better pick. Marquette, Ludington, Alpena, Sault ste. Marie, East Tawas, Port Huron, Marshall, Big Rapids, etc.
Ooof, Fort Gibson. It's cheap for good reason: It sucks! Hard to call it it's own town, it's more like a Muskogee suburb dominated by the military. OK 10 and US 62 both shut down about 3 times daily for military funeral processions thanks to Ft. Gibson National Cemetery, and all summer the entire town is downwind of the Muskogee Power Plant and the Georgia Pacific paper mill across the river from the power plant. And it's right next to a large military bombing range. The town floods regularly. So, good luck getting insurance that's cheaper than your house payment with a deductible lower than what everything you own is worth. Plus you gotta do all your shopping in Muskogee, which is a traffic nightmare thanks to US 69, or Tulsa, which is an hour away on the toll road each way or an hour and a half on the free highway.
Hahaha yup. Grew up in that area and now live in Detroit. Benton Harbor just doesn't have the thriving downtown scene like Detroit does. They have done a decent job trying to improve downtown Benton Harbor but it has quite a ways to go.
In my country (NZ) small towns cost of living is much higher. Higher services, higher property taxes and because of the lack of big box shops and competition shopping is very expensive. Much so that 60% of spending in the town I live in is spent in the surrounding cities. My house was cheap though and I hear rent is still cheaper but its getting more expensive. In summery I got myself a cheap house but my cost of living has sky rocketed.
My last time on Briggs. Anyone whose wisdom is to move to Portland escapes my 77 year old logic ! My Grandmother is buried in Portland and my Father used to be in logging in the area. I have lived in the Salem and Eugene area's and Oregon has gone downhill . But Portland !!!???
You might want to double check your images. You have a photo of Martinsville, Indiana beginning at the 3:39 mark... Still a small town but in Indiana, not Virginia. You have your Martinsvilles confused.
Please show a video on the cheapest towns and cities for someone who is disabled that pays rent on a very low income who is single with no kids please

Another gorgeous place to live is Madison Indiana. Beautiful town on the Ohio River
Janice, What are the not so nice things about Richmond, Indiana?
@@Miklos82 I have been gone for years, but I know that meth and heroin were definitely issues, as well as unemployment and crime. Richmond has a strange demographic with the history of Quakers (liberal leaning) and the "good ole boys" mentality. Kind of a Jekyll/Hyde small city.
E Lee, not Eli.
He's ONE of the very few on-air individuals who can say, *"Willamette"* correctly...
...that makes the way he slaughters Ely doubly odious !!!!.
I was just going to comment on his pronunciation of this town as well!
@@markn.reprisal9472 Yeah, cause he lives there!
I’m retiring soon and feel like I have to leave the US to enjoy a good life without living in poverty on my social security money. Your videos give me hope that I can stay in the US. I love oregon, but it’s too expensive to live on a fixed income. Thank you.
Oregon is no longer inexpensive. It sucks.
Newark Ohio is something to look at I love your work Briggs keep it up buddy
I have to pass a cow pasture 2 of 3 ways out of my neighborhood. Closest place to get food is a 24hr Arby's 12 min away. I live in a modular house around 2000 sq ft. 1.25 acres. 540 per month mortgage and 140 insurance 7 months per year. My power bill ranges 220-375. Like it cool in summer at 72°f and not chilli short winter 70°f. I live in Lugoff South Carolina.
I love the "Death by dehydration" comment. Made me laugh a lot.
I think this could be a trilogy of videos, but wait until after 2020, knowing how much of the country remains might be smart. At this rate I expect Godzilla to attack and the aliens to land.
Zenas Starchild 😂 👍
Bin watching these. INFORMATIONAL AND HILARIOUS.
How about Amsterdam New York. It's in the capitol region and not far from Albany N.Y. There should be some small towns near by.
So far I found 2 nice homes in Pittsburgh. Loved your lake video o, I found 6 there.
Ohhh wow!! I currently in in Cleveland and I'm looking to move to Ashland! Very exciting to see it made your list.
NICE VIDEO BRIGGS.BUT I RATHER STAY RIGHT WHERE I AM.I WOULD. DIE OF DEPRESSION IN ONE OF THOSE PLACES.THANKS FOR THE INFORMATION.
YOU WRONG on Benton Harbor buddy
it's a mini Detroit
Hahaha yup. Grew up in that area and now live in Detroit. Benton Harbor just doesn't have the thriving downtown scene like Detroit does. They have done a decent job trying to improve downtown Benton Harbor but it has quite a ways to go.
I was looking for 96% lower and found it.And it is perfect.I will not tell the world where it is to spoil it.
I’ve been through Ely, NV. It was okay. Felt like I had traveled back to the 1930’s.
Tupelo has been on the list of best small towns! It's great..and you can find land and maybe someone with an airplane hanger...
Great info! Haven't found the place for me yet but I was able to cross off 10 more places. Thanks!
Yeah Briggs Joplin only has big tornadoes for fun. Pburg is a university town.
Ely, Nevada, isn't nearly as warm as you suggest. It's over 6,400' in elevation. It's cooler than SLC for example. Hasty generalization?
You might want to double check your images. You have a photo of Martinsville, Indiana beginning at the 3:39 mark... Still a small town but in Indiana, not Virginia. You have your Martinsvilles confused.
Love your vids and the sarcasm. Stay healthy!
