Seeing her run has brought tears to my eyes, I am thankful I got to see her breathing and living again. Every engine has their own personality, quirks, qualities, stubbornness etc.
EXCELLENT, Union Pacific, his First Steps are really HISTORIC. Amazing to FEEL these images, Realizing THIS GIANT, has RETURNED to LIFE . In Person is MAGICAL . . .
A fantastic video of an awesome steam locomotive. A great event for the railway enthusiasts of your country seeing this grand steam engine run once again.
Appreciate the location notes. I've seen a few other videos on the run, but wasn't sure what was happening where. Thanks for staying out late and then posting.
Congratulations UP for a restoration masterpiece. The UK preservation movement salutes you. A magnificent achievement. One question, is the chain drive on the expansion link ( sorry, don't know correct US terminology) for a lubricator possibly? Thank you for posting this sir.
11:09 besides this as there any other problems during the test runs of 4014 an why did it go all the way to Colorado and was the diesel there just for help or for extra brakes?
I heard of several issues, pistion packing, lubrication of a compressors, backing issues, general lube break in concerns, and others depending on which U.P. guy we talked to. Colorado is not that far from Cheyenne, and even then they did not make it all the way to Greeley, which is a typical run for short excursion trains.
@@mccarvillestudios I see but besides thoses small problems is the locomotive gonna be fine on its run when it leaves tomorrow with 844 to Utah (p.s. what time do they depart Cheyenne tomorrow) and was the test run a success that everything but thoses problems the locomotive still ran okay
@@mccarvillestudios I remember reading after 4449 was restored Doyle McCormack mentioned there were some issues which obviously were fixed and she's fine. I guess it can be expected from an engine that hasn't been run in half a century.
The front piston packing was the main concern, but they went south anyway so they could get a lubrication break in, and reverse towed the Big Boy backwards with the diesel helper on the rear. It ran today.
Yeah, that was the talk all day. They kept doing starts, find something, and fix it so it was ready to go again. The first 'Go' I heard was around 11 am. There was issues with lubrication, specifically with a compressor, checking the brakes, later getting the lines cleared, and finally some packing of the front pistons. They pulled out of Cheyenne at sunset, stopped in Speer for maint. work, and then went south of Carr and passed me again doing maybe 30 mph. I think they were just looking for a siding because there were 2 freights following it, and they had to get out of the way.
@@danielwersing8714.... As of last night (May 2nd), the packing in the front engine's right (engineers side) cylinder was definitely a big concern, and was the reason for towing it back (backwards) to Cheyenne with the SD70Ah (EMD) that was trailing on the consist. Whether or not the issue is rectified at this point... am waiting to hear.
LOL, you know it's big, but when you stand next to it and look up, and how long it is, pictures don't really do it justice. The guys in the cab are WAY off the ground.
@@mccarvillestudios very true Have stood next to #4004 in Cheyenne too also the one that was in the record books before Big boy was The Challenger 4-6-6-4
That's what test runs are for, to find all the little problems that can turn into a major problem down the tracks. Thanks for the video.
Thanks!

Your welcome and I am glad you appreciated it. If I didn't create and notate afterwards I would forget a lot of what I wanted to add. Thanks again!
Awesome! I'm really glad to see big boy moving and running thanks for uploading this. ^^
Thanks!
Thanks for the update! Wonderful footage! Hopefully things will be fine tuned for the big debut in Ogden!

I honestly don't know so perhaps someone can comment please?
Ian Bunyan I think it is based on the fact that the chain goes to a tank with a gauge on it but someone else may be able to confirm what it is

So, what was the concern? What broke down?
The front piston packing was the main concern, but they went south anyway so they could get a lubrication break in, and reverse towed the Big Boy backwards with the diesel helper on the rear. It ran today.
Is the 4014 break in run completed?
Yes, as of the date on the video. It is roaming around the United States on various excursion tours right now.
The giant lives 👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼
Thank you for the nice video ;-)
Thanks!
Strange sounding whistle. Great video. Thanks for posting

Thank you! She looks beautiful.

I'm curious why they started the trip so late in the evening? You would think they would want full visibility of the day time.

That makes sense. Thanks for sharing. Do they think they have all the kinks worked out now and good to go?
