1. BJPs arrogance and repeated noice about changing the constitution which was interpreted as removing reservations for SC/ST. This narrative was not counted properly because they thought Modi face is enough.
2. The consolidation of Muslim votes against Modi. In my office all the Muslim colleagues specially took holidays and they travelled to lot of places in north and south to vote. Looks like there was a Farman this time from Muslim leaders to vote against Modi.
3. BJP should have protected the SC/ST votes.
4. BJPs arrogance in selecting candidates which were tainted and just relying that people will vote on Modi‘s face. That was just stupidity with which they fought this election.

As someone from UP who is very politically involved, the main reason was the Thakur votes. Although they make up only 12% of the population but they ensured other smaller castes voted for the BJP through their influence.
There were rumors of the BJP sidelining Yogi and distancing themselves from their old Thakur candidates (they rejected 35 candidates recommended by Yogi). This caused significant dissatisfaction at the ground level which then peaked when the BJP jailed some Thakur leaders who wanted to contest the election independently. Although the BJP later released them and included them in the party, the damage had already been done.
The effects were seen as far as Rajasthan and by the 6th phase, elections in MP were over otherwise BJP might have suffered losses there too.
now it's being heard that Shivraj Singh Chauhan will become the new BJP party president and the BJP has included some senior Thakur leaders in the party by the 6th phase... hopefully this solves the regional tension
