Signal is opensource all the way through so different business model to the likes of Facebook and Whatsapp, because it is full encryption Signal owners have no access to your messages and they are not stored
Try out Telegram too. When switching to another messenger, try a few and see which one you prefer. I was gonna switch to Signal but now I prefer Telegram after testing both out and a few others.

If your only interested in your privacy and privacy only then Signal is for you. If you're interested in privacy and better user experience, customisability, new features, better system then Telegram is for you. Signal is pretty simple whereas Telegram has all the features and more you should have for a messaging app.
Not to take away from your original point, but Google and Apple do exactly the same thing Facebook does, with the Play Store and the App Store. No tech giant is your friend.

I would definitely suggest everyone to at least once try Signal App. From what I have researched and found, it seems to have far better privacy than any other app.The only problem is, it is know to very few people as compared to telegram or other apps.

Initially, people were very excited to download and use the apps like whatsapp, Facebook and so. Same like what we are thinking about these new ones. Who knows, eventually signal, telegram etc will ask to infiltrate in our privacy and we will be in a same path again and again.
I dumped FB years ago, never used twitter(thank goodness), now I'm at crossroads to dump WhatsApp but persuading my contacts to share the same alternative choice is the hard part. Question, if you dump WhatsApp before deadline will they still use you old data.

And as long as there are no nefarious activities we have nothing to fear. Even otherwise there are so many ways our privacy has been raided and how much can we try to protect and at what cost. You should not forget DelaChat or Session Messenger. DeltaChat is chat via your existing email address, fully encrypted, and Session does not require a phone number to use....also end to end encrypted

Signal is great and group call is under Beta testing. I don't trust Telegram or Hike.
