  • Hi folks!
    Hope you're doing well! I'm on holiday at the moment but have lots of things coming soon and thought I'd release a quick little guide for any hopeful musicians/buskers out there. Over the past few weeks I've been busking and had a lot of success with it. Part of this has been through accepting contactless payments, and a few local musicians have asked me how I got setup with contactless for busking and what it involves. So here's a quick rundown.
    Thanks for your support,
    Blake =)

    Kind of important.... repeat payments only works with an iPhone. And the whole point of using a zettle for busking is so that you can use repeat payments. So if your existing phone is an Android, you buy yourself a zettle, and then all you have to do to set it up is go out and spend five hundred quid on an i-phone. Maybe this should be pointed out?

    Hey, thanks for the video! I really appreciated it! Can I ask you a couple of questions though?
    Firstly, I was wondering how you managed to leave the payment method and repeat the amount? Did you use the app or did you call the company?
    Secondly, I bought the same phone holder as you did but I'm having trouble adjusting it to fit my phone. Do you use it for your phone or just for the zettle?
    Lastly, I'm planning to connect my phone via Bluetooth to my amp for some backing tracks. Can I also have the zettle connected via Bluetooth to my phone while listening to music? Do I need to keep the Zettle app open all the time, or does it not matter?
    I know I've asked a lot of questions, but I hope you can help me out. Thanks so much!

    • @blakebakermusic

      Thanks for watching, will try my best to answer - yes, you can set the repeat payment function up on the izettle app I believe - it was easy enough to do but I do remember contacting the company and asking them to allow this for my account. Having said that, it was a fair while ago that I made the video so they might have updated the app since.
      When busking with the izettle I’d usually use the holder for that and keep my phone on me. After a while (~30 mins or so) the payment would occasionally reset so it was useful to have my phone on me to click the button again. I took a power pack for the izettle to keep it charged up for a few hours but up to you whether you want to do that or not.
      Finally, in my experience, you would need to keep the app open. You don’t need to be using your phone per se, and can just keep the phone on you with the app open, but if you then try linking to other devices via Bluetooth with it, it could affect your connection to the izettle. I didn’t use any other Bluetooth devices when busking as I plugged into my amp (which was battery powered) so can’t say much more. Hope that’s helpful, thanks for watching 😊

    Hi Blake, wicked video! I was just wondering whether you have to have the app open on the phone for the payments to go through? As sometimes I livestream performances and was wondering whether both simultaneously would be possible

    • @blakebakermusic
      @blakebakermusic  2 года назад +1

      Hi mate, excellent question, and to be honest I’m not sure. In a recent development of the app they have introduced a PayPal link, so it may be possible for people donating to pay this way, if they are watching the livestream, but whether the app would also simultaneously work I am not sure. I haven’t ever combined busking and livestreaming so I’d usually keep the app on so that payments go through easily. What I found is that once the continuous payment had been setup I could keep playing for a long period and payments would keep being accepted automatically. I reckon you’d need a phone + tablet, thereby allowing for one to record you (and accept PayPal.me donations etc) and the other to have the Zettle app open. Hope that helps, sorry I can’t give a more definitive answer.

    Good Video, thanks! Been busking for years and not really enthused about E-payments but I purchased a Zettle yesterday... ;) Only concern I have is I use my iPhone to work directly with ONsong during my performances and wondering if it has sufficient battery capacity to perform both functions for a couple of hours...
    I mount the iPhone to the upper side of my guitar so I can see it as necessary so an additional battery pack is not really feasible....

    • @blakebakermusic
      @blakebakermusic  Год назад

      Thanks, and difficult to say - I have found the izettle app to drain the battery to some extent since you need the internet on to establish a connection. You might have to try it, but my thought would be that the battery might drain quickly - depending on what battery ONsong uses (I don’t know the app).
      The other thing is that I found izettle worked best when I kept the app open really - keeping it open in the background might work, but I wonder if it will disconnect from the reader before long. Sorry I can’t help further with your question but I’d be interested to know how you get on 👍

    • @blakebakermusic
      @blakebakermusic  Год назад

      Thanks for watching - good question. I’m not sure but I’d say you have 2 options, which are either to make a joint account together (you could use one of the new banking apps (chase/monzo)) etc as those apps usually make accounts easy to open and minimise charges. Then you could join the izettle app and link it to the joint account. Or, if you wanted to avoid this, you could link it to one of your accounts and then send the other person half afterwards (the app shows you what you’ve taken each day etc so it would be easy to know what a 50/50 share of this would be) 👍

    So many questions! Is there a version that holds it's own sim card, to obviate the need for a smart phone (which I don't own!). If there is, then does this reader have the facility to autonomously accept repeat payments from different people. Also does it have a screen (I can't imagine anyone tapping without seeing the amount to be taken displayed)? Many thanks for any help. Of course life would not be anywhere near as complicated if we still lived in a world where people used real paper money and didn't feel incomplete without this week's latest technology! Thanks again.

    • @blakebakermusic
      @blakebakermusic  Год назад

      Hi Stephen, thanks for your question. I don’t work for the company so only have experience as a musician using it. As far as I am aware it doesn’t work on its own and you need a smartphone to connect it to a network. It does have a screen and the amount to be charged does come up. What I would also say from my experience of busking with it greatly is that success of using the reader greatly depends on the area. Busy cities are used to this and often expect musicians to have this sort of thing so are very open to card donations (and indeed some places may insist on this due to covid restrictions or similar), but it is not the norm and in most places people will prefer giving cash - especially in smaller towns etc. As such, it might be worth busking the old fashioned way, unless you feel you need to take contactless payments 😊

    • @stephentyrrell5951
      @stephentyrrell5951 Год назад

      @@blakebakermusic Many, many thanks for the advice. I was thinking of busking the old fashioned way and accepting cash only but was feeling that the majority of passers by would not be carrying cash these days. I tried selling tissues on the trains and although this was moderately successful, it was severely impacted by the fact that most people were not carrying cash. This was a few years ago and I felt that things have now moved on even further with regard to the prevalence of people relying solely on online and card payments. Although this might have been due in part to the fact that I was working exclusively around London (where I hope to go busking). What is your feeling with regard to the success of accepting both card and cash donations, as opposed to taking cash only? If it would be possible to take around, say 70% as much accepting cash only, then I guess that would be a viable option. But if it would mean only around 40 to 50% as much revenue generated, then I feel that I should go down the Izettle route. Sorry to sound so mercenary about such a fun and joyful activity as busking but, as they say, money does indeed make the world go around!! Thanks again Stephen.

      @@blakebakermusic Also (sorry for all the questions), when someone taps your Izettle card reader, what does that person receive as a reference, on their bank statements, against the payment. I have a window cleaning business and was going to direct all the donations into that account. If everyone who pays via the card reader receives a reference as having paid £2.50 into a window cleaning business, there will be an awful lot of confused people!! Is there a way to instruct the card reader what to give as a reference, for example 'Stephen the Busker,' rather than the name of the bank account? Many many thanks Stephen.

    • @blakebakermusic
      @blakebakermusic  Год назад

      I think card and cash is an option, and people will donate if they want to, regardless of how. Leaving your instrument case (or similar) out, and the card reader may be the best option. As for the bank statement, I don’t think you need to worry about that. I think it comes up as an izettle payment by default, but I also think you can change what it comes up as on the app, so the person paying will know it was for donating to you busking. Best of luck! 😊

      You can setup a ‘repeat payment’ system, where a standard charge is set by you - let’s say for £2. Once the people walking by have scanned and paid, the screen will return to the payment screen so another person can come by without you stopping. As long as you have internet connection (mobile data is fine), and keep the app open on your mobile, this works fine. I have done this on iPhone with no problem, not sure if it is a different system with different mobiles. To get the repeat payment set up, I emailed the izettle team, they set it up quickly for me 😊

      You should be able to set up repeat payments on the app. In this way, you set an amount as a standard payment for a customer (let’s say £1), and once a contactless payment is processed, the reader returns to the payment screen.
