I intend for this to be a throwback “remix”-style rendition that harkened back to my days of blissful ignorance. However, I was exposed to the source material before deciding to make an 8-bit version of it, thereby defeating the original vision that revolved around “composing without having first listened to the source material” as seen in my After Like 8-bit cover (which for some reason is one of my most viewed videos, below Cupid 2A03). The result was this amalgamation that tried to sound like two things at the same time: my early 8-bit work and my modern (carbon copy) 8-bit work.
Unfaithfulness aside, I tried to use single-channel echo to mitigate the constraints of only two pulse waves, and emulate what I had previously done and give my own twist on select portions of the song. And by select portions I mean only the ending and nowhere else.
The thumping bass called for a Sunsoft-style DPCM bass line, so this is what I did for the bass. Given that I absolutely hated all of my interim solutions, I gave up and downloaded an mp3 of a video that had isolated Sunsoft samples in it ( • NES Audio: Sunsoft Bas... ), and then used Quick Sampler to play the bass samples on a virtual keyboard which I am calling a “DPCM channel”. Hopefully I can invest in a secondhand (physical) keyboard soon so that I don’t have to keep using Musical Typing…
The triangle wave was free to handle as many drum parts as I wanted it to, in addition to the characteristic bleeps and bloops. The largest challenge came with transcribing the talk-singing into coherent notes. The opening lines especially gave me a severe headache, and I believed that direct note transcribing was too out of place, so I finally decided to bite the bullet and learn Furnace so that I could import and export authentic-sounding DPCM samples. Thus, the opening monologue was handled by the “audio” segment of the DPCM channel.
If you have acute enough hearing you can hear in the chorus that I tried using the noise channel in conjunction with a pulse wave to form the word “dash”, my second such attempt after the throwaway human laugh in Perfect Night (5B). Also, I abandoned iMovie in favour of CapCut, which opens up the possibility for lyrics to be added... I'll remember to do it next time.
Sometimes errors seep through screening, and I apologise in advance if the audio is a bit off (read: way off).
Like or dislike, it's all up to you. If you left a like, great! If you left a dislike, that's also great! Your ratings give me an idea of what to do and what not to do moving forward. If you want to discuss an idea for my next project, shoot me a question, leave a compliment, criticise me or even request a takedown of this video, just leave a comment and I will try to get back to you ASAP!
