How To Graft Peppers - Cleft Grafting Technique

- Опубликовано: 13 фев 2015
- I released a video recently showing the success of my grafts. There were many questions on the exact procedure, so I decided to make a video detailing the entire process. The method I used is called "Cleft Grafting" technique.
The plant in this video is a Chocolate Scotch Bonnet which I have grafted twice with two different scions. The first graft was a Trinidad Scorpion CARDI which was successful, and this new graft is a Bonda Ma Jacuqes. I hope you like the video. Feel free to ask questions or share the video with people who may be interested. Thanks for watching!

you're like a plant surgeon, truly an honor to learn from such a passionate skilled grower. Thank you for your time.
Now this is something I have to try now, very well explained and masterfully done. Thank you!
Thankyou to teach
How to get different
Grafting to another
Plant see you again
Kang, thanks for this video, you explained it really clearly and concisely and the camera position and angle were just right to see you demonstrate what to do, without anything getting in the way at a crucial part in the process (as some other published videos, unfortunately do). Really, helpful and fascinating to watch. Thanks Kang!
This is a good classic method to graft fruits too. I have done exact same thing to a pear tree, grafted into a wild pear and the combination turned out to be the best tasting pear ever. Good video.
I'm getting ready to try this with a pepper plant that broke off in a storm we had last night. Just refreshing my memory.
Good luck!
I know it's early to tell yet, but I just checked the plant I grafted last night. I used the plastic bag then covered it again with some paper towels to block excess light, since I am leaving it outside. I pulled the towels off and it looks great! Not even any sign of wilt yet! Today in the heat will tell-I may have to move it inside.
Keeping my fingers crossed! Thanks for the vid dude!
So How is the pepper doing now?
Simar2674 Dead. But that's b/c I left it in full sun: it was doing fine until then!
You really opened my eyes! Thanks a lot 😊. You've answered many questions I had. Excellent work 🌶😀.
this guy is my pepper plant guru. I love this channel
I am really enjoying watching your videos.. Greetings from Jordan middle East
Love the videos, I find them very relaxing.
This video was awesome. I had never seen anything like this grafting teqnique done before . And u did a magnificent job. I will continue watching u r great at what u do
Great video! Totally going to try this. In the future can you update us and see if they start producing peppers of different species?
Dude this is so awesome! I’m so glad there are people like you in this world bro!
Can't wait to try doing this! Great video!👍
Very interesting! Thanks for showing step by step how to do this! I am growing some peppers this year and I think I may have to try this. Ive never grafted before, but I have always thought it was fascinating. :)
Thank you for showing how to graft peppers . That was neat work. I look forward to watching the outcome.
Thanks Patrick! I'm hoping to get different fruits for these grafts.
Dannnng! Love this technique!
Great tutorial Kang! I'm so excited to try it. Now I have to decide which combo I want to do... maybe my Serrano with the Fresno a pepper since they are very similar.
Thanks again!
It'll be cool if you record your progress and share with us. I'd love to see it.
And what fruit will the grafted branch bear? The parent fruit or scion variety or mixed?
This was very insightful and very well made. good work, and very interestingly presented.
Excellent video! As someone who struggles to get sucessful peppers it broke my heart seeing you cut the peppers. lol.
I like the technique. I have seen grafting videos before with other methods but this one looks like the best method. Thanks
Thanks! I feel the same way about cutting peppers lol. I never want to throw away any of my cuttings, that's what led me to grafting. Thanks for watching!
That is great! I was going to recommend this video to JT but looks like he has already been here :)
You are the man... Great tutorial
nice job grafting. You are definately a kindred spirit. I'm a subscriber. keep videos coming.
Thanks Khang. Excellent tutorial. Grafting isn't something I've tried before, but having seen this, I might give it a go fairly soon. Cheers!!
That would be nice to see, Jim! I have never done this before either. My peppers are growing faster than I would like, and I can't move them outside just yet. I feel so bad throwing away the cuttings when topping, so I decided to give this a shot. I'm really surprised how well it worked on my first attempt.
I just tried this. instead of plastic wrap I ate two baby bell cheeses and used the wax. work it in your hands first and wrap and mold it around joint. It's really easy, strong and air tight. I think I'll have good results.
Tim D dude, that's smart
A brilliant idea! Will definitely use it. Thanks 👍
Really good idea, also PFTE (pipe thread tape) could work in a pinch.
Results?
You may aswell get the best stuff which is Parafilm "M" laboratory tape :)
Amazing!!! Thank you for Sharing
Awesome vlog. i will definitely be trying this
Great Video Khang! I'm definitely going to try this. Thank you.
Thanks!
Fantastic tutorial. Thank you!
Wow! So hyped to try this! :D
Just ordered some seeds! Just starting hoping to try all these techniques thank you Khang! I'm lovin these videos and making sure I click like!
Thanks Ryan! Good luck to your growing season and project.
Thank you khangg it was a great tutorial
..never knew we could do it so easily
.
Khang you've created a monster!😆 I have been collecting containers for the Kratky system you showed. I tried your grafting method with no luck yet but will keep trying. I want a Frankenpepper!!! Thanks for all your videos. Would like to send you a few pics of my plants after topping. They have sprouted about 3 inches in 2 weeks.
Great video thanks for the tutorial !
Thanks. Very informative.
Thanks for sharing🌿
Great video Khang - I think I'm going to try this this year!
Thanks Chris!
Thanks Mr Starr. I've tried grafting before, but I didn't get the knack. When I learn something new, it seems like I fail, fail, fail, then I suceed. I never seem to know, why I failed, and know I don't don't. Great video.
This is awesome 👏👏👏👏👏👏👏
great videos for experimenting hobby ! , thank you
Outstanding.
Great video, thanks!
cheers dude, going to go try this right now
Awesome video, i want to try it.
Just grafted a Butch T scorpion, Carolina reaper, and chocolate reaper onto a scorpion plant I started last year. Hoping to have a “Frankenstein” pepper plant this year.
excellent video
Very nice!
I thank I'll use an X-Acto knife rather than a razor blade. But I'm definitely going to do some grafting next year, I've been wanting to try for years. I will have video
Awesome job Khang... Great videos...
Thanks, George!
Sure Khang...your videos are super informative.
Nice information keep it up
You can use budding plastic as well. Not only to keep water going In, but moisture not to escape from the budding area.
The budding plastic stretches nicely and also give protection against sunlight and bacteria. You can also bud an eye onto your base plant by opening the skin off the rootplant.
Awesome. Dude, you handy!
Thanks for sharing.
wow I so gotta try this.
Amazing
That was a very good video with lots of close ups and clear explanation. Every season, I like to try out a new gardening technique or style that I've learned. You've given me the confidence to try grafting next season. Thanks!! I'm thinking of trying tomatoes to potatoes, and some peppers. Do you have any other suggestions?
Thank for the tip
Video Very educational
Good video
Good job on the video
thanks
Freddi Fish Thanks for watching!
Oh doesn't this just lead to some very interesting ideas! Excellent video Khang but you made me pretty nervous with that razor ... Thanks for the great tutorial!
JT Bear LOL I have switched to a safety blade since. This plant now has 4 more grafts (Reaper, Chocolate Reaper, White Devil's Tail & Orange Scotch Bonnet). Thanks for stopping by JT!
Khang Starr Nice! With just a hint of drool on my keyboard now ... are they all producing for you? Or better yet is there an update I should look for? ;-)
JT Bear I do have an updated video. They are flowering like crazy, but not sticking. It's probably because I had mites recently and the damage is still there. ruclips.net/video/4hFAr0fk2PU/видео.html
great video my youth...when is the best time to do this. I am planning on bringing my peppers indoor for the winter. do you think they will be too stressed.
Awesome
Why not use an X-acto knife, or something safer than a double-edged razor blade- like a single-edge blade?
A Swan morton scalpel would do the trick and would be safer than a razor.
haha thats what i said lol
First thing I thought was SINGLE edge. I carry razor sharp carbon steel blades...I have scars that prove I wasn't paying attention😄
FUCK THAT ROLL THE DICE! Lol
Nearly 5 years later, this video is still one of the best for learning pepper grafting!
I'm curious, is there an optimal age for the scion and the stock?
I'm overwintering a sugar rush peach pepper, it's a year old now. I'd like to use it as the stock and graft on chocolate butlah and maybe some sweet varieties like Rewia and Lesya (sweet peppers can be grafted onto hot peppers... right?)...
I'm starting the Butlah, Rewia and Lesya from seed; does it just come down to stem diameters matching up? Or should the scion be a minimum age before attempting a graft?
Thanks!
Great content as always. Would love to see an updated video, but even 5 year old content is still relevant today!
Thank you for the great video. I was wondering what would be the best time to graft chilli plants? Would Autumn be ok? And also if i wanted to graft more than one plant - can I do it at the same time or do I need to wait until the first one starts growing before grafting the next one? I have a large Trinidad scorpion and I want to graft Sc. bonnet and Basket of fire on it. And maybe more after that.
I noticed you were very diligent removing the blossoms..did you happen to use them or the cutting for a project? Just happen to be curious..thanx and great vids!!
Have you found what you believe to be the best stock for pepper grafting?
Wow!
I read through quite a few comments because I had a question about what species of pepper (in your experience) makes the best rootstock for grafting? I know in apples, they typically use a very hearty species (crab apple, etc.) to graft onto. What species would you recommend that has the most hearty rootstalk base type for future pepper grafting.
great video bro! what kind of grow lights do you use bro and keep thevids coming thanks!!
that's cool
i use a tiny dot of CA glue to affix 1/2" teflon tape to the plant so the tape stays put. Then I wrap tightly with the teflon tape. It kinda sticks to itself, but you can use tape the make sure it stays together.
pretty cool video i love hotpeppers and pickel my self .but never did grafting so this year i will and keep some plants indoors how about sun light because in winter not much light?
You have such a steady hand!
Would plumbers tape work also?
Khang Starr Thanks a lot for the videos, they're really well done.
Question, what's the purpose of Grafting?
One use for it could be if you have a limited space to put your plants indoor for the winter.
Single plant many types of peppers n clonning the pepper of ur choice
nice guide, when you are wrapping the scion it looks very fidgety. would i help to wrap the foil onto the bottom part first so that it is nice and firm so you can apply more pressure when wrapping it ?
This is super cool! What's the exact reason to do this? Just to have one plant that produces multiple types of peppers??
It usually is done to strenghten a plant. I.e. you use a base that is very resiliant with strong root system and a strong stem, then you plant a branch from a plant that is more fragile. You can use that method for fruit trees as well as long as they are the same family, you can have peaches growing on an apple tree but you can grow peaches on apricot tree
This is so fascinating!
Thanks a lot for the great video.. Have you tried grafting tomatoes on peppers?
+Khang Starr I'm so glad you didn't end up losing a finger to that razor blade and grafting that onto you're chilli plant instead! Maybe go onto Amazon and invest in a few scalpels If you haven't already :-) As always, great video Khang.
+Mike Upton hahhah yes, a friend sent me a surgical knife to use now.
Very good do you need light on it all the time thank you
Nice Video!!! Can you suggest us some pepper varieties for the root?
Hi, Khang! Have you tried doing double/triple rootstock with your peppers? Do you think it's going to be worthwhile?
Thanks for this great lesson in grafting, How old is the pepper plant grafted ?
Thanks
After watching your video, I was wondering why you suggested any kind of tape on your list? Thanks for sharing!
Great video. I'm new to growing peppers. Why would you so this?
Hi Khang I've had success with my graft after watching this, it's been about 2 weeks and I have new leaf growth and the everything looks healthy, thank you so much for your help 🙌 question : do I take the bag off now or is there another step before removing?
Once you can see that the union healed, you can remove the bag.The union is the part where the scion attach to the host.
Thanks Khang 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
@@KhangStarr hey just wondering does the host must always have flowers to do the grafting? After grafting do you need special nutrient for the plant? What nutrient do you use for you plants? Love this step by step video just come across it today now I'm hook.
nice video and you made this super easy lol. Those two weeks when you're letting the new node heal, do you keep the plant out of direct light, do you shade, or just keep the normal amount of light?
This was done indoor. I kept it under lights for 10 hours a day.
what about the tape?
will mcch true 😯
It was still on the cling wrap from the last time he used it on the other grafts. I'm 99.9% sure this was filmed the same day that he removed the wrap from the two test grafts so he recycled, as he does with everything else.
I am so doing this to my pepper plant
Do you think that I could use Elmer's school glue to cover the graft area? I use it in the wound when I cut larger branches off of my rose bushes.
I have not tried glue, but I think it should work the same as roses.
Great informative video, thank you for sharing your experience! Do you think it might also work to graft a sweet pepper (e.g. Bell pepper) to a hot pepper? As soon as my pepper plants are big and strong enough I will try this. I really love the fact that you do not need expensive materials to do this. Watching from France!
I am almost certain you can. I have tried an Aji which is a Baccatum, onto a Chinese and it worked fine.
Khang Starr thank you for the responses to all my questions - you really helped me a lot!
Can you craft different species of peppers (i.e. capcicium Pubescens with capcicium Annum)? Or do they need to be of the same species?
Great video. Wanted to ask. How big does the peppers need to be ? I have 7 types of peppers and have a lot of them plus have a small space and would love to do grafting so I could have lots of peppers in a small space.
+nery colon 1 The plant in this video is very small, just around a foot high. As long as it has a nice sturdy branch, it should be good.
Just some questions
1. What type of bulb do you use
2. What is the wattage
3. How many bulb
4. What is the lumens
5. How far is the bulb from the plants
6. How big is the size of your growing area?
hello friend a question what kind of pepper was the one in the red glass I wait for your answer greetings and even in the next video
Can I graft my peppers before winterizing the peppers plant?
You said wait two weeks. Is that for the bag or the plastic wrap.
Very helpful videos. Thanks for making these! Any tips for germinating seeds in peat for use in hydroponics? I am unsure of the proper moisture level
Keep the peat moist, and not dripping wet and that should be fine.
Thanks, @Khang Starr! Just as you commented, I had multiple plants germinate in the peat.
Some pepper varieties can grow taller than a person. e.g. I have an Aji Norteno and it's the tallest pepper I've ever grown. I intend to graft onto it. I would suggest you find the tallest bushiest varieties to graft onto, then you'll have a tall tree with your favourite flavours and fruits!
HAHA! Oh Great! I am growing Aji Norteno for the first time next year and I have limited space. I had no idea it was the worlds tallest pepper but it's a baccatum so I can't say I'm surprised. My Aji Amarillos were massive this season.
