During the early seasons, it seemed like Matt and Trey were trying to go for a Tim and Eric vibe (I know Tim and Eric weren't a thing at the time, it's just an example.) They didn't want to merely be the guys that made the show, they also wanted to be these weird characters. I don't know when or why they stopped doing that, but it might have something to do with them not thinking South Park was going to be as successful or long running as it was. As the show continued and they became more dedicated to it, the performance artist thing faded into unimportance.
