  • Quick stop at a nice looking Eastern Ontario road cut, outside of Bancroft Ontario, that quickly yielded some good crystals.

      I was actually quite excited when you pointed out the calcite vein - was very curious what you'd find.

      I am on YT watching other's videos anytime I am not on an adventure, editing my own videos or busy with work (not necessarily in that order). I prefer the reality of YT over the dramas of the made for TV stuff.

    Could you give me tips on places to look for and stuff? I'm just now getting into looking for natural minerals

    • @meMiner

      To start, look for calcite which might be hiding crystals. I also look for rust stain and books of mica which indicate mineralization. For sure, look inside any vugs (cavities) in the rock. Also, look at the edges where one type of rock turns into another. Sometimes, in the dirt under an interesting spot, will be loose crystals that have eroded from the rock above.

    Bancroft seems like an excellent destination for rock hounding. My wife and I travel occasionally, truck and trailer. Can you recommend a campground with good scenery for photography, fishing and rock hounding ?
    We have heard that Algonquin provincial park is a very popular destination, but we prefer off the beaten path.

      I have never camped by Bancroft, so cannot reliably recommend a campground. Perhaps, someone else will see your comment and have a good reply. The best spots for fishing in the area will require a boat. I have been many times into Algonquin Park,, but never to a formal campground. I canoed and portaged into the northern lakes. Lake trout in the larger lakes (deep, except in spring) and speckled trout in the fast streams. You are not allowed to rock hound in the park.

    Have you ever rock hounded around Manituowadge Ontario?

    • @meMiner
      @meMiner  6 лет назад

      I have done a little bit south of there along HWY 17 and east of there into Hornepayne. Someday, I would like to get up into Manitouwadge, but it is a long drive, so don't know when I will be able.

    Weren't you nervous that at any second the dirt you were digging in might be the very ground that was keeping that huge boulder from rolling down and crushing your noggin?

    • @meMiner
      @meMiner  7 лет назад

      Fairly low risk for this spot. Way more serious when beside loose high tailings (eg. as found in the Marmora Mine). The walls of loose rock can give way without much notice.

      Scott H. haha I was thinking about that boulder myself.. Almost made me nervous lol

    How did you clean them?

    • @meMiner
      @meMiner  7 лет назад

      With any rock, dish soap and water, with an old toothbrush, is typically my first cleaning. If they are brown (rust) stained, I will then soak in water with some Iron Out. Sometimes, that is all that is required.

      One other thing that I had good luck with is "deck wash" concentrate, especially if the samples have a green mold stain. It brightens them right up.
