- At the start of the 1900s, Trenton's John A. Roebling's Sons Company was looking to expand its wire making empire. Lacking the necessary space in Trenton, Charles Roebling found a location just 10 miles south on the land that is now known as Roebling, NJ. Building a massive steel mill and town for the workers to live in, the village would thrive for decades. Today, the plant is all gone but the village still preserves all of its old glory. On this episode of Destination Anywhere, we take a look at the history of the Roebling Mill and take a tour of what things look these days.

Just to clarify, the General Store is not unused currently. There are several businesses not seen at the front of the old building, facing the center of town. Apologies to Palermo’s Pizza, A-1 Deli, Boxing classes, offices, etc. as per Donna McElrea below. Thanks Donna.
Nice vid. I so like that Roebling made the 3"wire rope that was used on the inclined planes for the Morris Canal. The Morris Canal is a marvelous example of ingenuity.
I Grew up In Roebling NJ. My Dad was a Millrite most of his Life. 93 now Still Lives In Roebling

Great to see a story about the town I was born and raised in, Roebling. The house my sister Susan and I lived in my mother was also born and raised in. Her father and 3 of her brothers all worked in the mill. She met my father when they both worked in the Roebling General Store and had their wedding reception in the Roebling Inn. I graduated High School in 1974, the same year the mill finally closed for good. It was a great town to grow up in and I always look back and smile when I think about it.

Every once in a while i like to come back to this video and i love it so much. my grandfather actually did do a lot of things for this town and funfact founded the Roebling Firesquad and plenty of other things as well!
just saying i think it could be pretty cool for a update video because a lot has happened since and with many more of the people who have commented shared there stories i actually have blue prints from my house that are the original blueprints dating back to atleast late 19th century and i could give you more ideas/ information but after all thsi time still a great vudeo🎉

This is awesome - I am from South Trenton and my old neighborhood is visible from I guess about 100 years ago, Beatty St. Jersey street. You can even see part of the Trenton State Prison at 2;32 mark Thank very much I can even see my grammar school in the image - Holy Cross on Grand street

I LIVED in this beautiful town...thank you for producing this marvelous episode. Life was good in this town of many faces. Rich ethnic groups graced this community. I had my first job when I was 9 years old selling Trentonian newspapers every morning in front of the mill for 4 years. I ended that career at the age of 13. I graduate from FTMHS in 1968 receiving many of its honors including being inducted in the National Football Foundation Hall of Fame for scholar athletes. I worked in the blooming mill during summer break from college. Still have my mill badge. WOW! Roebling was blessed by our partner...Florence. The pipe foundry was awesome in its production of below and above ground piping. We had the A & P store, the general store and Sam Deseys drug store along with Diamond's dental. A small barbershop was on the 4th Ave side of the street where as kids we played checkers. Blondies barbershop was on Knickerbocker Ave as was Jabbo's, the paper-store, Korinko's deli and Pintos hardware. Pete's and Sanders pizza...oh yeah... Oh, how I long for those days!!!

How about Benninghoven's? I loved that little grocery/candy store. I used to buy my penny candy there and Tastykake peanut butter "Kandy Kakes," cupcakes, pies and butterscotch krimpets for 12 cents. Is it still there? It was on the corner of Delaware Avenue and Station Road. Miss that little place...

It was an Hungarian community..there was a Catholic church that preached in Hungarian. My Aunt and Father lived in Roebling....they were Hungarian
My grandfather is hungarian and he lived in roebling as well.

Great video! Another place you need to check out is the Roebling Bridge on rte 97 just west of Port Jervis NY, just outside of Lackawaxen PA. While there Checkout the Zane Grey Mueseum, and have dinner at the German resteraunt at the foot of the bridge ( although the name escapes me, the food is Wunderbar!) Also the bridge is only several miles from the American Revolution, the Battle of Minisink, ( Also called the Battle of Lackawaxen, or the Battle of Flat Rock.

Mickey, its Lauren Mayer. Great video! We live in Mansfield and Roebling is our neighbor. I was just driving through there on Monday looking at the old row houses thinking how it was probably a factory town at one time. It's still a cute, sleepy little town. Hopefully we can go for walks and check things out once the weather calms down. Awesome job with these videos!

I lived in Roebling for a short time but being from the south I never fit in. I remember a small store that the people who worked there always ask me a dozen times what I needed when I ask for something. Like they couldn't or wouldn't acknowledge that they understood me the first time.

The Roebling General Store building that we own has many tenants including Palermo’s Pizza, A-1 Deli, Boxing classes, offices, etc and is not as you stated, “currently unused.” We are very upset with those remarks. Please edit that. I was President of the Roebling Historical Society over 20 years and love my town.
Donna, I'm sorry you and your tenants were upset by the term "unused." I was out front of the building for about an hour taking photographs and talking to people about a month ago and I didn't see the front door open once, nor did I see business signs and the windows over to the left at the 5:40 mark appear to be covered by sheets. I will leave a pinned comment that mentions that I was referencing the main entrance facing the circle and not the side or rear of the building, all of which was part of the General Store as you point out. I apologize for that oversight. Hopefully you can focus on the fact that the rest of the 9 minute video speaks highly positive of the magic of the town.

Was jj’s when I moved there and I got my go joe comic books at Donna got my hair cut on the side of that building. So many memories
My Mom and Dad paid $6000 Dollars for their home.
