- Rare 1985 Buick Century T-Type purchased at an estate auction. One of just 2,850 built. It’s going to take some work to get this classic eighties car back in shape, but it did make it home.

What's your favorite oddball eighties car? Let me know in the comments.
Need an update. Also, for sale?
Agreed, we need an update. I miss my black 86.. Wish I would have kept it. And if you sell let me know. This car was the gateway drug to my Taurus SHO OBSESSION!!!!
This Buick Century T-type is super rare. They didn't sell many of them and God knows how many are still around today. Please do not modify this rare car and try to keep it as stock as possible. It's in beautiful shape and is such a wonderful car to behold. I've always been a fan of the more sporty T-Type Buicks and the Centuries are some of the most rare since most people that wanted a sporty Buick went for the Regal, Lesabre or Electra. Awesome car.
Plans are to keep it stock
@@MikeFrankovich question. Did they come with a turbo as an option?
Loved the t-types. Personally have an affinity for the 1986 Somerset T-type as it was the first car I bought.
i just scored a 87 Somerset - 52K mile 1 owner
Great buy! We found a LeBaron for my oldest son who was 18 at the time.hes 30 now. But it was A barn find...we only paid $400 for the paint was faded but it was a very very solid car all it needed was brake lines
This was my first car T-type and all. Was passed down from Grandma, Mother, older brother to me. I would love to find one again.
Good job .This is big Mike I was at the Auction With my brother. Can't wait to see your other videos.
Great to meet you. I’m doing some work on the Buick today and hope to have an update soon.
Congrats on your purchase! I had no idea you have one of these! My mom had an 85 Grand Am SE with the 3.0L V6. The Grand Am had the same issue with one tire locking up. It ended up being a leaky rear wheel cylinder.
Awesome find! My grandmother had an '86 Century T-Type, black with a gray interior on GoodYear Eagle GT+4s. I loved driving that thing. I've been looking for one like it for a long time--or even a nice non-T-Type that I could make into a T-Type clone.
Very nice car! Nick sent me a link to your video. I love the 80's cars. Have a Century Olympia from 1984, with a 3.8; which I added a turbo to.
Love your channel and turbo builds.
@@GrandCamino6 Thank you!
Nice Buick awesome buy
Hey! Thanks for posting this video. I'd like to see more of this nice car. That'd be great!!
This is an A-body with Buick's 3800 V6 - considered to be one of the greatest modern GM engines in terms of both power and reliability.
Haha, oh the nostalgia. My first was an ‘87 T-Type - also white but with blue upholstery.
Extra-cool part about that car? I bought it in ~2002... from the original owner. He was a retired, life-long GM employee - was a mechanic for at least part of his career & as a hobby - he *meticulously* maintained & stored that thing. No, smokers, no kids, no pets - backseat/back half of the car looked like it had never been occupied by anything but grocery bags. He had a different car for the winter and kept the Century safe and salt-free in the garage. So despite being a ~15 year old Michigan car - it was totally rust free.
The only thing wrong with it, as noted in this video, was the obligatory saggy headliner over the back seat. Owner addressed this by cutting a narrow band of wood, painting it same color as the liner... and that inconspicuous wooden arch corrected 99% of the sagging without looking trashy or weird.
Can’t remember the mileage when I got it, but the thing was amazing. I took it on 3-4 1,200mi road trips and only problems I had during those were tire issues - never mechanical hiccups. Man, now I’m really missin that car. Sold it to an uncle after a few years since I needed a 4WD for lots of backroad / drifted snow driving - wish I could have afforded to keep it - unfortunately, uncle didn’t keep it long before he sold it to someone for peanuts.
Thanks for the video & some good info on the T-Type Centuries of the mid-80s, been a while since I tried to do any research. I had entirely forgotten about the RPM indicator light strip until seeing it here, what a car.
Now that's a great car and at an even better price. Congrat's! With the bucket seats and center console I'm guessing the T-Type is considered the sport model for Buick?
I'd kill to find a 5 speed Cressida wagon. I don't know if they're considered oddball but I've only seen one in my life.
Just about anything with a manual in that era is going to be rare.
@@MikeFrankovich Upon further research, they never made it in that configuration in the US. Now THAT's rarity. I guess the one I saw was a swap!
Unfortunately the US didn’t get the manual version of many cars that had them overseas. Diesel versions of cars were almost nonexistent here as well. We really missed out on some great stuff.
@@MikeFrankovich True. At least we did get bizarre diesels in the 80s!
Great find
Those 80 GM cars all had head gasket issues which caused those cars to run hot especially the 2.8 a thermostat a new radiator and possibly a new head gasket will cure it if it starts to run hot when driving turn the Heat on it’ll take the engine temp down.
Cool car I like the Celica that was next to it too
They do get some interesting vehicles
@@MikeFrankovich Looks like it Jeep and Bronco super cool
They went for more than I had in my budget
@@MikeFrankovich Very sought after vehicles but maybe you'll get lucky and find something similar in your budget
Good find good price
It still needs some help, but it shouldn’t be too bad.
A few things....
1.) While the parking brake might have never been used then jammed down that wont make em lock.
The A body has an issue with them locking up while cold or wet for the first few miles at low speeds. Especially after sitting a few days....even if the brake shoes / drums are new.
2.) If you are sitting in traffic(or crawling real slow) especially in the heat they WILL run hot. Found out the hard way many times. Lol.
3.) Third brake lights were optional from the factory in 1985.....mandated by the government for 86.
4.) Check or replace the water pump and the electric fan if you plan on racking up the miles....also if it has a coolant temp sensor. Ive had two 3300's before my current one and both ive ended up changing that stuff when it would just stop working and it would always happen at the worst time too. Keeping in mind the 3300 is the 3.8 younger brother....
Driver side window was a broken wire. I had to rewire both front door switches in my 86.
Great job on your videos. By the way Is this auction? Off of Valley and Temple?
Thanks. It’s every few months in City Of Industry.
Can those seats and console be used in an el camino?
let me know if you ever decide to sell
My friend has it. I can ask him
I had a silver one
Mine had different grill and digital dash..Two tone leather
My mom had a iron duke Century it was the biggest piece of crap. The radio stopped working right before the whole car stopped. That thing didn't see the 90s for very long
You wanna sell it
Sold it to a friend who is putting it back on the road. I plan to do an update video
My dad bought an ‘86 Buick Century T-Type for me to drive in high school. I absolutely loved that car. It was the definition of a sleeper. Mine had the 3.8 L V6, the more aggressive nose (the grille was actually raked backward slightly) and the grille was blacked out. It was silver with gray interior, and it had a digital dash display. He traded it in on something else when I was away at college. He bought it for me to drive, not “for me.” I was crushed. I keep looking for one to pop up, but I know the likelihood of me finding one is low. Man, do I miss that car.
I actually remember that car!
Nice car reminds me of my Dads 86 Chevy Celebrity he had back in the 90s when we were kids. His had a 2.8 V6. Yeah id hang on to this A-Body GM as these are extremely rare now especially in good shape. Looks nice for a 38 yr old car.
My friend has it now along with an '86 model.
@@MikeFrankovich nice 👍 guessing the 85 is rarer for some reason A-Body enthusiasts like 85s more for some reasons especially in the Chevy Celebritys
cool car! Pretty unconventional!! Mom had a 1985, my favorite is the Riviera!
Not too many of these left.
What a great find! I'm guessing you'd have to smog it if you want to transfer title to your name? Or did this come from the auction already smogged?
And how much did you get to poke around the car before the auction started?
Brad Hansen No, I have to get it smogged
I have a 96 century if it was gifted from my great grandmother I wouldn't have it that being said it has the 3100v6 I've thought about the 3.8 intake and super charger swap for shits n gigs big ass throttle body upgraded cv axles if I can push 450hp out of my century I think I could have fun in it.
Had pontiac not been saddled with chevrolets celebrity offerings...2.5/2.8 they could have offered a 6000 gto model with Buick v6.
i just scored a 1987 Century Gran Sport with the 3.8L
Dam that guy looks like he is going fast just standing there. 😂
My dad had 1. He drove it for 20+ years.
That's a great find! As a big fan of these GM Abodys iv always liked the TTypes..very cool cars. Looks like it has a good home too
Nice car! I had the same in 1986. Got some parts laying around if your intetested, rims with center cap, tail lights, GM factory trans replacement used for only 10,000 miles before got rid of car and steering rack with inner and outer tie rods that were relatively new
This car seems to have found the right buyer - someone who will appreciate it and fix it up, rather than just using it and not taking care of it, or sending it to the junkyard over some minor issues. I'm glad you know what it is and want to save it. It is an interesting car, and definitely cool with the 3800 V6 and the nicer options that the T type came with (e.g. sport steering wheel and full instrumentation on the dash). The 3800 was actually a big engine in a small car, so I bet it has good power.
Wow these T-Type Century is very rare and even more rare is the 2 door model. These T-Type's are very collectable items now. Most of them hit the junk yard by 1995.
That's an awesome car. I had an '84 with the Iron Duke in it for my first car.
Do you still have the car?
My friend has it now
