Basically, everything from Half-Life 2 can be used in Portal. In fact, making a custom level for Portal is basically the same as HL2 with the Portal Gun usable! The only downside is HL2 enemies can't hurt you.
This is exactly how I feel too, whilst the release version is better. I find this design very intriguing since everything is a lot more dirtier because of the half life 2 textures/models and its a weird feeling that some levels are mostly similar to the release, you know the layout yet it looks completely different. I do like it actually, haha.
The last level was cool but strange; Imagine if that was in the final, with GLADoS telling you to go through a building and find batteries to restore power...
@@yummydragon8533 pretty sure the reactor core is just referring to the core of a nuclear reactor, and if it had solar panels then what would the core be reacting?

That was the original idea yea but that's not what this. This is before they designed pretty much 90% of the textures and models, therefore they are using half life 2 assets to demonstrate the game. What you said is correct tho. During designing things took a turn and they'd instead use that idea for the sequel
What a glow up, the final game is a massive step up from this beta, but the core elements are there, so much so that the chambers were more or less unchanged for the final game layout and puzzle wise.
This has an oddly specific subsection of sci-fi to it that's really alluring, similar to that of bioshock where it feels real by giving it the industrial treatment.
Portal Kind of captured that in it's own way though, especially when you get to the backrooms, portal 2 built on it way better though, still super industrial but when GLaDOS is finished fixing chambers it's SUPER sterile, so much so that it become uncomfortable. The first game feels uncomfortably clean through a lot of it IMO.
I’m surprised the high energy pellet catchers weren’t recycling the Half Life 2 Episode 1 model in this build: that’s where they are from after all. Unless this build of Portal predates Episode 1.

Usually, first-person models aren't the same models than third-person ones, so that means they had only one of the two models ready for this version. It's interesting because this game almost looks like it could be a part of Portal 2 considering how different it looks. It feels like almost Portal 1 is in a limbo between the simpler graphics and the more grunge textures that are also seen in HL series. It does use that aesthetic in the backstage areas with graffiti and stuff, but Portal 2 is way deeper into that. The checkered old-fashioned looking floors are what does it for me, it looks like that place where they show the roots of Aperture Science, next to that hella cavernous "outside" environment. And this is when you realize, it was an homage to the early DEVELOPMENT of Aperture Science's home game. That is fascinating stuff.
For those of you wondering: In 2005 the game was still in development. Many of the models and textures were borrowed from HL2 as placeholders while the other textures were worked on.

Its the 2005 version and 2006 version :)
how did you get this?
Let me hug you. You made my day.
Tell me, is that a build or do I have to play with the Sourcemods folder?
Hey, it seems that there are only the lvl1,3,5 and 7 in the 2005 version, and without continuity :(
Really interesting to see footage of this ancient game.
Aperture in 1770
You mean 1970?
1980/1970/1990*
6:57 What a hell is futuristic box doing there?
Portal was supposed to be where the Combine were the main enemy/characters (apart from Chell) instead of GLaDOS
There should be a mod that converts the entire game into this ramshackle aesthetic. I’d play that
Apurture mesa
I like how the combine door opens.

For Me, This Is Basically Aperture Science Innovators.
so this is what portal 1 would look like if aperture science was still in the 1950s
EDIT: 7/20/16 wow top comment? thanks guys
with cool inventions called errors
lol
They designed huge flashing "ERROR" text and stuck it on their front desks and in random other places.
Admittedly, that's a very Aperture Science thing to do.
Error on the floor:)
But does this mean that have redrawn everything to make it look as it looks in the end?!
LIKE SI LAS GRAFICAS DE LA BETA SON MEJORES QUE DEL FULL
Kid Bunt like if u like these graphics than the full version thats what he said
Kid Bunt triggered lol
Imagine what Portal 2 would have been like if this was what we got.
I love the look of the old portals.
Why are ValvE demos so interesting? Even the final game is interesting after release.
