There's always the ocean
Hardly ever hear praise for Hozier's incredible backing singers. They are a choir in their own right and lift his amazing voice to a transcendental level. They are just as amazing in concert.
He rarely uses other backing singers in his track recordings.It's usually just him doing the backing vocals but his live backing during performances are AWESOME. All of them sing including the drummer. And the 2 primary backing singers are excellent artists in their own right. One is in Native Run the other is their vocal coach.

These are probably critics that haven't listened to any sort of Gospel music. It's often repetitive. I'm not even religious and I find joy, strength and passion in it. It's about the feeling the music gives you, sometimes through the music itself, sometimes the lyrics, and if you're lucky, both. Damn critics, make your own opinion. To me, it’s a culmination of a several sings, most particularly, following perfectly after “Would That I.” If the first album was the songs of a broken heart, this album is of a man in love. Honestly you know what it is? This music feels like exactly the type of music that they should be playing in church. It's soulful and it's worshipful. And it feels like that deep and abiding love that one should have, that's completely unconditional. I'm not Christian myself.

You know. This is a beautiful song, but if you take into account the myth of Icarus and Daedalus, it’s an incredibly heart wrenching song.

I can't help but remember the music video and all the sweet moments between the characters there -- as well as the horrid ones.
I feel like this song describes that story too, in a way. Or a story of another same sex couple ("the tale's the same, told before and told again"). But it lingers in the weight of a secret and how their love would bring it to light.
They lived in the darkness of night--"in cold and rain"--before they met them. It would be perhaps more peaceful to "shun the light" and live life pretending to be blissfully ignorant. And yet like the night giving way in the face of sunlight, they've fallen in love fiercely for the first time ("whose heart would not take flight? ...flew like a moth to you, Sunlight"). In doing so, they betray the religion that guided their life ("the moon as acolyte")
Falling in for the other made them realize that they were never straight ("at last can grant a name, to a buried and a burning flame, as love and it's decisive pain... all that shown to me was something foreknown to me").
And now their life has changed. The image they had of themself and the world they knew before fades like a photo under sunlight - under falling for the other ("these colors fade for you only").
But in the end, it was the life they gladly chose.
They'd wake up together each morning, with no regrets. Despite all the pain, of having a religion which damns them, they'd do it again in a heartbeat.
