  • Filmed on November 8th, 2022. A lunar eclipse occurs when the Moon passes directly behind the Earth and into its shadow. This can only happen during a full moon, when the Moon is directly opposite the Sun in the sky. During a lunar eclipse, the Moon appears to turn red or orange, which is why it is sometimes called a "blood moon." This is because some of the sunlight passing through the Earth's atmosphere is bent and refracted, casting a reddish light on the Moon's surface. Lunar eclipses are relatively common and can be seen from anywhere on the night side of the Earth. They are safe to observe with the naked eye and do not require any special equipment.
