Welcome to an electrifying journey through the week of space awesomeness! If you want to see where all that attention is being spent to prepare for the next Starship flight, this is certainly the place to be. Elon announced SpaceX's Starship Version 2 to take Center Stage! Lets hope the design includes tiles that stick on better, because that needs to stop. New Glenn seen in the wild, finally, but is it just a test tank? Or a real flight article? Now wait… is that what we think it is? And.. What is going on here? Those my friends are great questions so let's do this!

The former program manager of Blue Origin’s BE-4 rocket engines has filed a lawsuit against the company alleging whistleblower retaliation after he spoke up about safety issues.
The complaint was filed on Monday in the Los Angeles County Superior Court. It includes a detailed narrative about program manager Craig Stoker’s efforts over seven months to escalate his concerns about safety and a hostile work environment at Blue Origin.
Allegedly, Stoker told two VPs in May 2022 that then-CEO Bob Smith’s behavior caused employees “to frequently violate safety procedures and processes in order to meet unreasonable deadlines.” Smith would “explode” when issues would arise, generating a hostile work environment, the complaint says. Stoker sent a follow-up email to the two VPs - Linda Cova, VP of the engines business unit, and Mary Plunkett, senior VP of human resources - that included a formal complaint against Smith.

I have a vague memory that Elon Musk mentioned they only built the tanks themselves because at the time they weren't able to get their hands on commercially available tanks.
So, they never wanted to build the tanks in the first place. And they probably also knew that building them vertically was a bad idea, but with the production facilities available to them, all they could do was build a Starship tank.

Yes. I used to haul fuel. There are baffles in the tanks to make it so the fuel sloshing does not turn the whole truck over. But..weight, right? And then the baffles would need to be strong enough to endure the huge mass of fuel moving suddenly, otherwise the baffles themselves become part of the problem. But still, anything would help, even wire baffles would help slow the fuel moving in the tank.

Additional views of the mid module tanks have been since released by Julia Bergeron that show it just before it went completely back inside the factory and visible next to it are parts for an aft module (engine section) as well as a single landing gear.
If all that isn't enough, just this morning a photo was released by Talk of Titsuville of a complete fairing rolling on a transporter, looking like a practice run for payload integration and transport ops.

If someone insists on telling me that they are convincing, they should choose at most 3 points for me to research and debunk. I don't have time to debunk entire TF videos.
I adopted the "max 3" policy after a friend told me that he was convinced that Spinlaunch's technology could never be made to work based on a TF video. Scott Manley was justifiably concerned about Spinlaunch's business case and their ability to find a launch site that could support an exclusion zone for such frequent launches. TF was mostly just confused.

Faster fueling rate has been a concern for 60 years. A heavy lift vehicle (one that can place 300k lbs into a very low parking orbit of 100 miles for 3 orbits) can only sit on a launch pad fully fueled for 20 minutes or so in lift off status.
Increasing rate of a "fillup" is crucial to increasing launch window viability, and without the infinite coffers of the US Gov't to spend from, saving money and time now actually matter.

@@alexeytsybyshev9459 A burst test puts magnitudes of order more stress on the envelope than a puncture test would. They're pressurizing it quite a bit higher than it will ever see in operation, so if they were to pressurize it to the operational pressure delta it would see in space and then shoot a hole in it, the stress would be minimal. Puncture tests can be replicated just as accurately by taking a piece of the material and tensioning it over a frame, then shooting it to see how it handles the damage. The envelope doesn't behave like a rubber or mylar balloon, think ripstop but with proprietary kevlar/polymers instead. There's a reason why these envelopes burst into tiny fragments when they fail...it's because they don't propagate tears like rubber balloons and all of that strength holds until the entire skin reaches a breaking point all at once. It's better to simply not think of it like a balloon at all when visualizing its robustness because it doesn't behave like any balloon that you've seen before.

Great animation with the fuel tank slosh. The reported negative accelleration that prompted the slosh was caused by the intense impingment of the Starship plume on the top lid of the Booster. My impression was that that intense impingement was only for a couple of seconds, during which the three central booster engines kept firing continuously. So, I'm wondering if the duration of absence of booster acceleration shown in the animation was longer than it really was.

@@MarcusHouseso as for "slosh" I think the correct question to pose is "why no slosh problem on launch 1 if there be slosh problem on launch 2?" other than that spot on summary. As for system integration work as hinted at with all of the "knowledge base" needed by subscribing to Brilliant the most important not mentioned is "statistical theory" and how anomalies are explained as deviations from the mean of which now SpaceX has two anomalies in the form of two failed Starship mission sets though both succeeded in launching and in performing separation events critically. Next to SpaceX I still think New Zealand based Rocket Lab is the most important as only Western Australia has built out the "fueling infrastructure" similar to what is already extant upon Gulf Coast Texas. This moves us beyond the introductory knowledge base to that which is effected and thus deemed practicable. Space Launch is critical to both the US and Australia New Zealand economies because of how critical pipeline natural gas infrastructure and systems are to both economies respectively. By launching rockets these massive engineering systems are "validated" by using the most extreme measures known and test to and beyond expectations of both breaking and destruction. I don't know of any space launch facilities planned for Southeast Asia but given all that has been gained so far certainly exploring this as an alternative to the still near almost en toto nationalistic approaches to this effort would be yet another "small step for man giant leap for mankind" and like returning to the Moon probably whilst this will never happen..

I wonder if the new metal press is the key to Starship 2 improvements. They could stamp larger stringers with additional bend geometries and complex shapes to add strength and reduce weight.

One possible use of course. I'm not sure how well mega press technology (1) works with stainless steel though. In that case if large numbers of stringers and rib sections are needed then regular convention stamping technology might work better. The critical point there is the technique used to join them togetherer.
      1) It is my understanding that the Mega Press technology allows the diecasting of large one piece structural elements.

      @donjones4719 6 месяцев назад +1

@@mpetersen6 The Tesla Gigapresses are indeed for injection casting the front and rear castings of the Model Y and the Cybertruck. Aluminum is injected in just milliseconds. They haven't tried to do anything like that with steel. On to the stainless steel: At one of the interviews for the Cybertruck deliveries one of the Cybertruck engineers talked about how stainless steel that that thick can't be stamped. To even bend it that sharply without stressing that crease they needed to invent a new machine.
Tesla developed their own stainless steel alloy to withstand that. Total speculation: that alloy will be used to make better stringers, etc, for Starship. Tesla and SpaceX do share their top metallurgists.

Working in maintenance and repair, you would be surprised how much time is given simply in consideration of the people working around you not in maintenance and repair. If you can simply shut down a section at the drop of a hat, thing can immediately go so much quicker.
A week to set up an entire tank farm under those circumstances when the foundation is already there, or setting up massive precast wall is simple.

Thanks for the updates! Just thought about this again the other day: Insane how routine Falcon 9 has become. I still remember the time before the first landings, when every SpaceX launch was nail-bitingly exciting and terrifying. Now, SpaceX is established as the market leader. Betting against SpaceX (and Elon Musk) was always a terrible idea, and I think that's gonna hold true for Starship as well. It might take a while for Starship to find the same streak of success as Falcon, but when it does happen, it will once again transform the space flight and exploration industry.

You may find that your T-shirt with the date may have more appeal if the date were in a sensible format. If you look at "Date format by country" on Wikipedia, you will see how many counties use the MDY and it is not many. The most popular format is DMY.
Being Australian, your country uses DMY or YMD, but not MDY so why do you do it?
