As a former Carnatic violinist, I have to say I'm not at all surprised by the left hand holds for a lot of those people. The techniques in Indian classical music are quite differently adapted to the style. Because we have to gliss and oscillate the fingering back and forth (you obviously can't vibrato a space of a minor third, for instance), the way we play is adapted to that purpose... that often includes doing something (either holding the thumb higher up or putting more pressure with the thumb) in order to anchor the hand more firmly for those neverending up and down movements. So it stands to reason to me that a lot of actual violinists they grabbed for the extras would do something that is closer to that which is familiar to them. They never learned any other way.
Also, because the style involves so much of this oscillation, the hold is also not similar. We need the instrument to be firmly anchored so that the motions in question can be done consistently, so the standard posture does involve resting the scroll on the ankle and wedging the lower bout against the neck or chest/shoulder. A lot of Indian violinists are not very tall so this works in general, but some taller players might have an attachment they place on the scroll that just adds some extra length so that it suits their body size. But because of this, the absence of shoulder rests is pretty common. They don't serve any purpose with that kind of hold. In fact, neither does the chinrest, and most Indian classical violinists play without one. This also is why you saw the reaching for fine tuners from the opposite side. When your violin is wedged in that way, that angle of approach to the fine tuners makes more sense.
As an additional point, many of these probably Indian classical violinists might be thrown off by the difference in tuning, which could also explain them struggling to hit the "correct" strings. In Indian classical music, there are only two constants -- the tonic and the fifth. All other notes are subject to variation and momentary incidences of being in tune. It's a system in which pitch is *implicit* in effect. As a result, we tune the violin tonic-fifth-tonic-fifth, not in a series of fifths. It also means, that we tune to some pitch based on the performance. Typically, a violinist is going to be an accompanist to a singer, and if that singer happens to sing in E, then we'd tune the strings EBEB... if they sing in C, we do CGCG tuning. As a result, the training for the fingering and when we use which string is attuned to that kind of setup. It's really hard to break out of these habits for anyone because that's what they're used to.
If ever there was an instrument in this universe for which people are set in their ways... it's the violin.

Okay, so I'm a young adult student violinist from literally the city (Kolkata, India) where this film was shot, and although I don't have professional experience as such, I have performed in youth and student orchestras ( both here in India and in Japan and USA, so I know the contrasts) with other professionals, and I can answer some questions.
    1) Most of us, even seasoned professionals, use 4 fine tuners here in India, since the hot and humid climate makes the strings lose tension very often.
    2) India doesn't have that much of a vibrant culture for western classical instruments, (cause Indian classical is a whole different genre and it attracts more students), so some of the things you see like wrong bow hold or crooked wrists are due to lack of proper teaching.
    3) Same reason why shoulder rests are missing in some of the violins, because believe me, we have just one or two proper luthiers in the entire city of a population of 4.5 million.
    3) In film recordings, there are no conductors, just an arranger, who works on behalf of the music director. Sorry, things are not that professional here because western instruments are seldom used here. And yes, that is how they sit too, because of lack of space in studios. (Again, not popular instrument here.)
    4) Serving tea in studios: That's just part of the culture of the people of Kolkata.
Also, the main actor is obviously not a violinist, but I guess the backups are. And I don't know why but I feel the need to apologize for all the horrible things here, because I know it is literally a cultural thing.
You don't know how much I wish I could seriously pursue music in an European country or the USA, especially having played abroad and witnessing that culture. I am 22 now and have only been at it for 4 years now, and so I guess my ship has sailed for any prospects of becoming pros like you, but I just wish.

IMPORTANT : The way they tune strings is different too 💣💥 1st string is a D , 2nd string is a G , 3rd string is a F and 4th string is a C... they hold the violin in front like they did and actually they sit on the floor legs crossed with one leg abit in front and they rest the scroll of the violin on the ankle.... Also they dont have CONDUCTORS as far as i hv witnessed.... No offense to twoset violin coz i lovee them 💖💖 but indian cannot be reviewed in the western way cuz they play the EASTERN way ( caranatic music they call it)
P.S. IM not Indian i am sri lankan but we learn the same.... Hope you correct this mistake... LOVE YOU TWO SO MUCH 💖 plus im pretty sure they dont even know what a stradavirius is ( hope the spellings are right) and they DO NOT use shoulder rests at all!!!

Usually whenever a person plays any raaga they have their own compositions. For example if soloist A plays raaga yaman it doesn’t mean that soloist B’s raaga yaman will be the same piece. Plus people don’t play with sheet music too! Cause the notes- sa re ga ma pa dha ni så is pretty difficult to position on the sheet music.
As a person learning the violin I can tell you there is no such thing as proper violin teaching in schools. You have to go to high level institutes to do so since the teacher do not I repeat do NOT teach you pizzicato, staccato, and stuff like that. I learnt it ALL from twoset. I did not even know stuff like that existed. I DID NOT know much about western classical music but now I can gladly say I know a lot and all the credit goes to these two bois.

Some background information: I'm a half-Tamizhian who was raised mostly in Australia and America, so I'm severely used to seeing people use the western posture/bow hold when playing the violin. That said, I'm also a Carnatic concert singer and many years I have performed with a violinist. It is jarring at first when you see the stark juxtaposition between Western and Carnatic postures but you can't blame them for it as they're not obligated to play it like the westerners. Carnatic music has its own fine sound and qualities, and as such they have their own ways of doing what they do. It's like comparing a Carnatic singer to an American Pop singer and saying that the voice caliber is too thick and telling the singer they should change.
We don't want to nor---do we need to---change. But that's just my two cents.

    Lessons with professor Bharadwaz:
In India, there is Indian classical music where the violin just so happens to be used, but as it is a different genre the way it is used will also be different. In Indian classical, the violinists sit and play, while the scroll faces the ground and not the side, hence their angle in which they were playing in the film. This also explains the shoulder rest "problem". Also the way they hold the bow is different; the wrist is bent, but they definitely don't hold it the way the guy in the first scene did.
Aside from all of this, the rest is all bad directing.
Thank you for coming to my ted talk :)

Hi TwoSetViolin, in India violins are played differently in 3 different major classical schools of music.
    1. Ofcourse western classical
    2. Carnatic or South Indian Classical
    3. Hindustani or North Indian classical
Now, the tuning, the postures and the technic varies. Please check it out. I am not saying that "The Violin Player" got it right. But in case you are curious check out violin concerts on RUclips by N Rajam. A good recording would be the "Jashn-e-deccan" concert which I had the fortune of listening live in Hyderabad. The tabla was by Pandit Samar Saha. Check it out.

i was JUST explaining to my parents about the difference between western and indian violin! i have to admit i found indian sacrilegious at first, but after reading these comments i am understanding so much! i still think western is better, but i suppose i just lack experience in the indian style.
aside from just posture differences, the whole music theory behind it is different. it's more like playing based on modes(called raags), while polyphony and stuff isn't as much of a big deal. i'd say it's like a single ribbon being twirled around in exquisite patterns, while western is like that parachute game you play in elementary school where each ripple grows and connects to others. even in solo pieces there is more of a framework and overall structure to the piece, while indian it's all improv, going back to the main line, another totally different improv, main line, repeat
tbh i'm a noob in violin, indian music, and music theory, but as someone who at least has their foot in the door for all 3, i wanted to offer my pov.

    • @aniketmaharjan2025
      @aniketmaharjan2025 4 года назад +10

Yes! Western and indian classical music theory are so different.
I think the lack of polyphony is what makes indian music so hard to get used to. But after understanding indian music theory, practicing ragas, and looking at improvs that last for 20-45 minutes, ive found carnatic music to be so much personal, strong, raw, and passionate. Especially carnatic violins and cello recitals and jugalbandis, they're so addictive when you keep listening to them.

In indian classical way we actually dont use the chin rest in most cases becuase we sit with our legs folded and pace the end part of violin on our feet so we should use the fine tuner the other way....even if we play it in standing posture aka using chin rest, we dont use the shoulder rest most of the times...using shoulder rest is somewhat like showing that you cant use or handle the violin properly in here...All violinists in india moslty play without shoulder rest

My grandfather was an Indian classical violinist and played the violin for over 70 years till he died in his 90s. He was good. You don't sustain or survive bad music that long. First time i saw a shoulder rest was on TwoSetViolin though he did use a chin rest. I was too young to remember, but he used the violin as you guys use it as well as a different style where it was more vertical, like the musicians in this video, which i remembered only after seeing this. As a kid, the violin was too big for me, so I mostly learned in the vertical style only (though nothing major, just generally being able to find a note on it or simple tunes that weren't too fast). Even then, it was too big for me and my wrist ached if I played it for a long time. That much I remember. Haven't held a violin in decades, so no idea what it feels like with a grown up body. lol.
Edited to add: Just read that others familiar with violins and Indian classical music have actually explained this better - which I did not know myself. I still struggle to translate CDEF... notes to Sa-re-Ga_ma... which I am used to. lol. But Ling Ling is no stranger to Indian classical music. 40 hours a day is what it takes here too. heck, being a good listener and understanding what is going on in its glory can take 40 hours a day. lol

    ruclips.net/video/UE51-YNs5do/видео.html
Here she plays an 'Aalaapana' (pronounced "ah-La-puh-na") . It's a part of the concert performance where the artist improvises and develops a tune in a particular Raaga ( similar to a scale ) which introduces the raaga, and it's defining features to the audience this is usually don before playing a song .
But in this video she does this through three raaga's seamlessly. Sort of Like a mashup of songs..?

Stray note: It is really weird to hear so many Indians dissing Indian violin training because they did not learn western techniques. There are things Indian classical music does (violin included) that drop jaws worldwide. It cannot be your teacher's fault that you didn't practice 40 hours to get there. No school makes you good. They teach you techniques. You need to put in the 40 hours for the Ling Ling insurance in Indian classical music too. As for not doing the vibrato, etc - I am pretty damn certain you are speaking of Hindustani classical (which prefers pure notes and sees vibrato as an impure fluctuation), because carnatic music does not just do vibrato, it uses vibrato-like oscillations between completely different notes that can stump Western Musicians.
I am not trained in any kind of music, just very interested and I know this, so those who claim to have trained not knowing this basically says they were either sleeping in class or they don't admire something unless they see it done by foreigners on RUclips. This is with no disrespect to Western classical music - also a huge fan of TwoSetViolin. Merely pointing out that getting good with ANYTHING requires a skill level, which takes 40 hours a day - I truly love this theme going on with this channel. It conveys the commitment to learning perfectly. Watching vibrato on RUclips won't teach you vibrato any more than classical training taught you nothing beyond sa-re-ga-ma (major scale, I believe - in Western Music)

Hello Brett and eddy violinist from India here. Thank you for reviewing this movie scene. I'm not a professional but from what my teacher said Indian orchestra setting is not traditional western orchestra setting. The way they record film musics is on a whole different way and that's because it should match the Indian music. The number of violas and cellos used will be relatively very low. So please don't judge that and I 100 percent agree with the rest of the video! Thank you guys! Big fan from India! I have been following you guys for years!

Just saying,as an Indian, our violin style differs from the western form. We mostly use 'sa right ga ma pa da ni' which are the Indian equivalent of 'do re mi fa so la ti'. So, yeah. And also, we sit cross legged and the violin rests at our collarbone and the tail rests on the soft spot above the heel.
