    I had the gift of not playing New Vegas before Fallout 4. So I went from 3 to 1 to 2 then 4. I bought New Vegas over the summer and holy crap... Why is this game so old, but so much better than most open world games we have now. I love that we don't have a pre established story. I love the factions that have an impact on the main story. I stumbled across a vault and was asked to side with a faction that I didn't want on that playthrough and I'm like shit.... I can't explore this vault.. then I went to the next room over and found out I can screw over that faction. That's dope af. The map is huge, it's lived in. It's the new standard. Black Flag is awesome though. And it's funny because the characters are supposed to be the most unlikable and the worst if the worst, but they are the ones I felt for the most. Edward's breakdown in chapter 10 was cheesy, but his voice actor sold it, as through most of the game he was calm and witty, and during his dream/breakdown, he was screaming and crying and it was just a good depth. Majority of the characters are likable. Blackbeard is both scary and laid back and I've never seen a character do that as well as him.

    I'm two years late to this vid but I have to say it. Knight was an improvement on every single aspect. The story was great, the batfam interactions were amazing. GOTY edition easily stands next to City and Asylum for it's own reasons. It only got a bad rep because of over reliance on tanks and few bosses (fixed with SOI) and because it ran like absolute dogshit.

    • @maxmfpayne
      @maxmfpayne 2 года назад

      Listen, I love knight, but if you think it actually improved on EVERYTHING on an objective level you are just wrong. The story, while having a lot of great moments individually, doesn't have any logical consistency. Jason hating Batman doesn't make nearly as much sense as under the red hood, in which he hated him for not killing joker and avenging him, for not putting an end to it so nobody else could suffer at joker's hand. In knight, joker is already dead, and Batman didn't abandon Jason, he thought he was dead. Also everyone thinks Batman killed joker after Arkham City, meaning Jason should also believe Batman killed joker, the exact thing he wanted in the story that inspired this one. There are a lot of smaller issues but I'm not going to dissect every plot point beat for beat, you get my point. It's fine, and like I said it had really great effective moments until you think about how they interact with one another. Also the plot lost some impact by not being paced as well, with it making you stop the main story to do side quests while waiting for your next lead isn't that bad, but when it happens between back to fucking back tank battles it's infuriating. Especially when the tanks don't make any sense at all. Jason knows Batman can't kill, if his tanks weren't unmanned they're basically invulnerable without killing anyone inside. Trying to get through the story just for it to be filled with tank battles and logical inconsistencies sucks. Arkham City's story is so, so much better than knight could even dream of being honestly. Hugo strange and protocol 10 were great, but that ending with joker is more than great. It's impactful, meaningful, fucking iconic. It displays such a deep and nuisanced understanding of these characters and how they work together, complete one another, it simply cannot be topped.

    • @maxmfpayne
      @maxmfpayne 2 года назад

      Part 2: the combat is knight is great, especially if you bother learning all the combos and whatnot, but the issue is most people won't. They're gonna punch some dudes five times until they can do a takedown, do the occasional environmental takedown and maybe the more intrinsically motivated players among us might use the grapple hook or explosive gel special takedowns. Arkham City, however, gives you interesting options and split second decisions instead. You get free flow focus, you could use that to just destroy these dudes or you could use your takedown, or you could down a few enemies and the multi ground takedown, or you could use the powered up versions of your gadgets that offer great crowd control options to focus on more dangerous enemies, then another layer of depth is added with how your gadgets interact with different enemies. Did you know shocking an armored enemy sends them flying backwards? Little things like this add enough depth you're always finding little ways to get the upper hand, noticing new variables to account for. This to an extent applies to knight, but they really nailed it in city. Honestly, the one and only way I would say knight improved upon city's foundation was predator encounters (despite having nothing anywhere near as good as the freeze boss fight.) The fear multi takedown feels and looks phenomenal, really, it feels like you're fucking Batman truly. The ai also seems to have more ways to counter your bat shenanigans, fire bombing grates and whatnot. Moment to moment gameplay wise, I'd call it an improvement. You can tell they wanted the ai to learn from their mistakes the way freeze did. However they never utilize this incredible, beautiful depth to it's fullest extent really. We needed another stealth boss that actually challenged the player. That bullshit with Jason down not count, it was literally three normal predator encounters with a psuedo quick time event thrown between them. It was fine, but it's not at all living up to the greatness it's following in regards to predator style boss fights. I mean seriously Jason is just a sniper and he takes long enough to shoot you he feels incompetent and half blind.

    My first disappointments when it came to a game release were Fallout 4 and Halo 5. For some reason I enjoyed literally anything handed to me before that, but then again I didn’t have many games that weren’t good and when I *did* have bad games I was too young to realise it (I am way too nostalgic about Sonic ‘06). I grew up with the Halo series being something integral to my family. My earliest memories are of splitscreen CE bloodgulch and my dad dying to infection forms in Halo 2. Hell, my first console that I was allowed to play on unattended by my dad was a Halo 3 special edition 360, and Halo 3 was the first game I ever got to truely play outside of the aforementioned CE splitscreen. So despite Halo 4 being underwhelming the longer I thought about it and butchering the spirit of the series, I was excited for Halo 5. And you can guess how that went. But lucky for me, Fallout 4 was coming soon and was certain to make up for the disappointment! Seriously, that hype train hit me hard and a few months later I was the proud owner of a pip-boy edition soon destined to be a not-so-proud owner of a pip-boy edition. From then on, I’ve never trusted anything with hype surrounding it, outside of the occasional exception like RE2.

    Arkham Knight is an amazing game.
    In general it's a step up from city and definitely from origins.
    The combat is faster and more frantic than ever, with more enemies and more moves and options, better quick-fire gadgets and animations that are as good or better than ever.
    Stealth sections are better, with enemies using more gadgets and stuff, and you being able to hack stuff to backfire on them or distract them, doors you can lock to keep enemies in rooms, and heavy enemies that you can only take down with a loud takedown move that takes time.
    The batmobile was.... urgh. Fine. Definitely should not have included the batrmobile. Or at least not included those stupid drones. Because if Jason Todd knew all that about batman, he would know just to put a single man in each drone. Not even one of his own soldiers. Just keep them as a drone and put a hostage in each. Job done.
    I didn't mind some of the puzzle solving. Some of it was pretty fun.
    But just because the batmobile was mostly bad, didn't mean the whole game was bad. Because mostly you could ignore the batmobile. It was actually faster to traverse the city without it.
    And as for microtransactions, there weren't any. They did too many "challenge" DLC's, sure. But who cared about those anyway? The actual expansions were great. Batgirl expansion was a ton of fun, and season of infamy was a fantastic little send-off for some of the other villains, most especially Ras Al Ghul and Mr. Freeze.
    I couldn't find much other than the batmobile to complain about with this game, seriously.
    And the batmobile was only there because people demanded it since arkham asylum. They kept demanding it and demanding it, even going so far as to say, in a lot of cases, "no batmobile, no buy".
    So they had to shoe-horn it in. And for an arkham game, they did just about the best they could have ever done with it.
    Overall, it's my second favourite of the arkham games. Right behind asylum. Maybe level pegging for second place, along with city.

    I want to say one thing about the Dark souls 2 segment. While I can't help but agree for most of the things, saying that you don't get any good weapons till 75% of the game is just objectively wrong. The Rapier and Mace are two of the most pve destroying weapons that are easy to obtain pretty much 3% through the game. The katana sold by Mcduff is also amazing. The Drangleic sword is another. All of those 4 different weapons are easy to obtain early in the game and they are powerful enough to cut through the game like the buttery slugde that it is.

    I loved Arkham Knight when it came out, but I do see the flaws now. I wouldn't consider the season pass microtransactions, but it is annoying to cut content and sell it later, and I despise the tank battles. And I think the graphics are still gorgeous in that game.

    I do prefer dark souls 1 because it has more atmosphere and a more creative boss design, but I do have to disagree on some of your points.
    Weapons and shields: That you don't get the best weapon in the game right at the start is called progression and it has a purpose. The game is way more fun if you try out out different weapons (and infusions) during the game. Sure, black knight halberd and lightning zweihander are great weapons, but you are gonna miss out on other fun weapons if you don't experiment. The game gives you a 100 percent physical damage after the second boss in the forest of fallen giants. And both the flaming long sword and the halberd are good wepons that can carry through a huge chunk of the game. The weapons you get from the Heide knights are great for faith builds and you can get them very early, too. Also the infusion and boss weapon systems have been streamlined so it's now way easier to try out different infusions or buff your magic resistances for certain bosses.
    Teleporting: It's not as bad as people make it out to be. Yes, it is boring, but it is way better than spending several minutes backtracking through areas to get to get around in DS1. Especially in the first half of the game when you can't teleport at all. And to make up for that you can level up, upgrade or repair your gear at bonfires. But you'll still gonna do a lot of backtracking to do other things, like buying new equipment/spells, infusions, farming, quests etc. Being able to teleport to any bonfire right from the start in DS 2 makes traveling a lot less tedious and saves you time in the end. It also means you won't get stuck in an area like you could in DS1. Like getting cursed by the basilisks in the sewers and having to walk all the way back to the belltower with only half of your health. Or being stuck in Anaor Londo or the painted world because you can't defeat the boss. Or how about having to go through Sen's fortress a second time, because you didn't know that cage thing at the top is an elevator?
    Speaking about time saving and convenience: Now infusions and getting boss weapons is way easier and needs less resources. And it's great that you don't need a bonfire to restore your humanity so you don't waste it if you die on the way to a boss.
    So they did make some improvements. But also some steps back: The estus/healing is worse than in 1, the carry weight and stamina split was a bad idea and reducing the players health upon death is terrible for newcomers and annoying for veterans (but you get some workarounds with the rings you find).
    Can't say anything about DS3 because I haven't played that yet.
    And yeah, loading screens suck. But they are a technical limitation and not a design decision. The system needs time to load the assets in. And in a large open world game there is a lot of assets the game has to load in. So it will only load the parts around the player, to make the game run more smoothly. But if you teleport or enter a building the system has to change everything and that just takes time. In some games they can hide that loading time with animations. Like Link playing a song on his ocarina to teleport for example. But in games like Skyrim or Dragon Age Inquisition the loading screens are so long that you can't reasonably make an animation for that. Seriously, DAI takes so long to load sometimes that I worry the game or my console froze, especially since the music stops midway thorugh loading.

    I've gotta say as an indigenous dude, I was hyped as fuck for AC3. It's so rare to find any natives in media that don't fall into some type of stereotype, are sidelined, are villains, are brutalized, etc. so I was SO excited to be playing as a native dude. Honestly the game and his character still holds a place in my heart because of that and I still revisit it from time to time, but I was so... disappointed with his character. I mean, its almost as if they were trying to be as inoffensive as possible with his character they forgot to give him a personality besides "revenge". Like, we know he's clearly a good guy who will do good by any means necessary, but the same pretty much goes for any AC protagonist. Sometimes during the game, I felt as though he almost falls back into the "stoic native" stereotype just because he's rarely shown being more than 2 dimensional.
    Also, I'm not sure if anyone else was disappointed by this, but I was hoping that the Kanienʼkéha people would have more involvement in the main storyline considering that they've possessed a whole ass Piece of Eden for like what, centuries? And the game just never really touches on that besides them thinking it allows them to communicate with Spirits? Like I had so many questions lol. Not to mention leaving the fate of Connor's people entirely open ended (obviously we can infer from real life history but you know... still disappointing). I was also hoping there would be missions involved with them, like something similar to the homestead missions but they pretty much exist as padding for his background then are just fucking gone after a certain point in the game and that's it. Highly disappointed in that regard.
    Don't even get me started on the DLC.... that was a fucking nightmare. I actually had to turn it off at one point, it just made my stomach turn with how brutalized the Kanienʼkéha were and how stupid the "animal powers" were. I'm Tsalagi, so I can't speak on behalf of the Kanienʼkéha, but I felt as though the involvement of the animal powers was tacky and sort of offensive. His outfit in that DLC was dope though I guess. So yeah, I agree, the game sucked ass for more than just the reasons you stated. I guess you gotta hand it to the game for being the first AAA game with an indigenous protagonist though? Unless something came before that that I'm not aware of.

    Let me just say that regarding your opinion on AC3 I could not agree more. I stopped playing the game entirely after an enemy NPC was still attacking me during a cutscene, and managed to kill me during the cutscene, causing the entire cutscene to freeze, leaving me unable to even pause the game so I could quit. I was just done with how unpleasant it was as a game.

    Strangely I've put several hundred hours into Spore, and a lot of other people have too. I think if it had come out with its original vision intact, it actually wouldn't have been as popular and probably would've ended up being pretty obscure. It would've been much more niche, where as now it has a dedicated cult following that keeps a thousand-ish players online at all times.
    There is something to be said for simplicity.
