Thanks so much for showcasing Barbara Lynn. She is one of my favourite Soul singers. Her particular version of Soul is called the Gulf Coast blues. She is known as the Queen of the GCBs but for my money she is Queen of a lot more! She still performs today at 79 and normally just boards a Greyhound bus along with guitar and heads of to meet like minded folk. No fanfare or fuss. She is an American Treasure!
The swinging 60's a very cool performance by Barbara Lynn, Clarence Gatemouth Brown and the band. when Barbara did her slide on the fret you smiled with delight. another good one Fil,
A black girl fronting a band and playing guitar, that alone is a mind blower, civil rights time and a forerunner as well...if you lose me you lose a good thing is a classic to boot. Barbara you were a first! I love you, simply said
This was my introduction to her and you better believe I was surprised. She was playing that guitar and when she started to sing I said Woah baby! You go girl!
Look up sister Rosetta tharpe. She was doing this in the 1930s and 40s - yes playing rock and roll on electric guitar back then. Rosetta is the founder of rock and roll guitar.
Hi Fil! Now how on earth did you remember Barbara Lynn from 66!? You always impress me with your knowledge of so many artists! Wasn’t she amazing!? What a voice...what skills she possessed! One of the greats of that era! Hugs to you Fil for remembering her tonight! Love and ✌️! We left handed folks are talented in our own way!
5:15 - She was putting the thumb over the strings here in 1966, which she would have been doing for years - LONG before Jimi Hendrix became famous for doing the same thing. 9:30 - Again, she was ahead of her time. See: Nile Rodgers style of "chucking" with Chic in the 1970s.
I’m so glad you did this one! It’s one of my favorite performances from The Beat. I love Barbara Lynn! She recorded a couple of songs at my grandfather’s studio in Houston (ACA). Gatemouth recorded a lot of his early sides there, too. I’ve watched this so many times, but you have now increased my appreciation of it even more! Thank you!
Thanks for the introduction to Ms. Lynn. I love seeing a woman playing the guitar at the expert level. I'll add her to my female guitar hero's list. It gives me hope that one day I'll be able to play a recognizable song.
I saw her perform about 20 years ago in New Orleans at an event called the Ponderosa Stomp. It had an unbelievable bill, including Scotty Moore, DJ Fontana, James Burton, Earl Palmer, Dale Hawkins, Tony Joe White, and the Sun Ra Orchestra! Barbara was unchanged, and she played what looked like a Jimmie Vaughan signature model Strat. She was supported by the late great guitar man Lil Buck Senegal, just like how Gate is backing her here.
I've never heard of her. Fil, you provide so much info! I love learning things from your reactions! And it's cool she's still with us. I'm going to check out the documentary "I Am the Blues" from 2015 that features her and other blues musicians.
Very cool, Fil. I wasn't aware of Barbara Lynn. I love the twangy slides you explained were part of a call an response exchange. That vocal jump was great to be aware of when you replayed it. Love all the details you explain guitar and vocal!
Excellent Fil! I wasn't aware of Barbara before your vid, so thanks for introducing me to this glorious and unique talent! I'm not a huge guitar buff, except when I hear someone who plays so uniquely as she does. Love her growling vocals as well! So enjoyed this...thank you!
She had guitar chops and a great voice and I love the fact she is playing an Esquire, my favorite guitar and #1. Saw Gatemouth Brown in 1981 in, of all places, Flagstaff Az.... his tone grabbed you immediately, surprising powerful and loud playing finger style only. Great video, have this one in my archives. Wonderful stuff Fil. 👍
Wow, she's fantastic! How is it possible that I (and so many others in the comments) never heard of her? I hang my head in shame. Many thanks for doing this one, Fil.
Wow I'm so pleased ! Thanks so much , brilliant analysis and the guitar tips I've been hoping for . I love this woman and her Esquire ! Gatemouth's Rickenbacker Capri is to die for too !
Wow!!!!,,,,RB .... very good selection; Barbara Lynn has a great virtue for the guitar and there are very few musicians who play the guitar with the left hand and she is great; I like the few recordings that I listen to, her album Blues & Soul Situation was the last thing I heard and the l.p. So Good for more than a decade and again I had another decade without listening to it. It is of its existence in the 1960s where a very good rescue was developed. I congratulate you. Also, your analysis was very good and precise; I repeat it is a marvel being one of the few women who play the guitar with their left hand, a star in it I congratulate you, greetings👏👏👏👏👏💯✔🎸🎸🎸♖♖♖🖒🖒🖒👌👌👌👌⚘⚘⚘🎶🎵♩👊🤘
Thanks for letting me discover her as an artist. I had probably heard her doing songs but had no idea that it was her playing. That's what I like about your channel, you show these musicians and show their ability. Clarence is someone I've heard many times before, always treated wth much respect when he is on stage. I'm sure that Barbara was inspired by Sister Rosetta Tharpe.
Afternoon Fil. Never heard of her but she could play & sing. I see where it could take years to master the guitar and from reading alot of comments people play all their lives and never master what they think they should. Wanted to let you know, why I don't know but because of work I won't be able to watch for awhile. I will always spike the likes for you. Have a great one Fil, it's a Holiday(Labor Day) today here in the USA. ❤
Hey Fil whenever you get the chance check out the rest of THE BEAT and you will not only be AMAZED by the playing of Mr, Clarence “Gatemouth” Brown, but by Mr. Johnny Jones and Mr.Billy Cox along with the rest of the band called THE BEAT BOYS. Btw don’t forget to check out FUNKADELIC LIVE performing Red hot mama and Cosmic Slop from Houston Texas 1976 or 1977. You won’t be disappointed.
This song is wonderful and there is a great need for a decent subtitle, in the Spanish language!! Greetings from Paraguay 🇳🇱 I fell in love with this song !!!
Just discovered your analysis video. 🎶😎 Absolutely nice for late sundays. Happy greetings from Germany 🇩🇪🇬🇧 Would like to see an analysis of Jesse Ed Davis ...maybe🍻
Love their snappy syncopation, so great playing together! Clarence can tear up an auditorium all by himself. I saw him do it in about 1980, in Cotati, California. 😎
The links took me onwards to find another great - Sister Rosetta Tharpe - I can't begin to calculate what influence she has had on blues guitar playing ever since.
Right on Fil,love how you cover all genres of music.Love this video.I didn’t get a chance to comment on your Sam Cooke and Hendrix acoustic vids cause I was listening in my car on my commute home from work, but great job with those as well.I know I asked already but I’m gonna keep throwing it out there haha,if you get a chance Fil analyze Art Tatum’s live video of his take on ‘Yesterdays’.Or Oscar Peterson’s Solo Marathon live in Berlin in 1985.Some of the most insane piano vids you’ll ever see.To me those videos are the epitome of this page and the type of stuff you breakdown so eloquently.Peace
Yeah, pretty unique Fil. I love how she's playing clawhammer on that (amazingly well played in for a 50's model, I'm guessing a 59) Tele, thumbstroke is really subtle. Luv it, thanks!
It was pretty unusual during that time to have a front woman singing *and* playing guitar ... not just rhythm but lead solos as well. Great analysis, Fil.
I’ve never even heard of her before. Again ,always learning something new .Ohhh man, look at the hippie vibe ! I love Hippies and their Vibe ! Another new Artist, and song . Thanks Fil . She’s having a blast ! 🦦 = Moi . Barbara is 💃. Really comfortable with her Guitar . I’m not exactly sure ,but most people are right handed , again playing left would be different. I drive standard ,but in England 🏴,I’d be woahhhh...... the gears are on the wrong side / and the road ! To me they are lol. I remember once going down a one way street , until I realized, that it wasn’t cool at all . She’s good . There’s millions of people/ musicians, I keep hearing about. ❤️🎶❤️
Look at Barbara go... Gatemouth is playing rhythm but he can't help sliding around the chord now and than.. I love both guitars... 😄 Thanks professor...
A bit of showmanship in there too! It’s around 2:00 that you see her fret hand slowly going up the neck while she hits that open string (E, I think)...ears and eyes start having an argument. But that fret hand is in position to execute that slide down. I love watching other players doing their thing! I thought “You Left the Water Running” was Ken Boothe! Oh well. I love his version too! You always amaze me, Fil. Looking forward to the day you get around to some Ska and Rocksteady.

Love how she dances with her guitar! She's having a good time. What a talented lady. 👏
Another killer performance from the 1960's. Barbara Lynn, what an inspiration!
The swinging 60's a very cool performance by Barbara Lynn, Clarence Gatemouth Brown and the band. when Barbara did her slide on the fret you smiled with delight. another good one Fil,

Classic...

Look at those go go dancers in back. Wow! I don’t know these guys but thanks for the analyses. I learn something new every time.
This performance popped up on my RUclips suggested videos out of nowhere about a year ago. My jaw is still hurting from hitting the floor that hard.

I've never heard of her until now, an amazing woman. I'd love to see her live, hopefully she'll come around here some day!
What a beautiful soul she is, to sound so awesome and wearing heels, she is a class act❤
5:15 - She was putting the thumb over the strings here in 1966, which she would have been doing for years - LONG before Jimi Hendrix became famous for doing the same thing.

I was 5 yrs. Old when this song came out. My Dad was 29 . He always danced with us girls. All the way up to my wedding.
This would make ANYBODY Feel Alright!
Another artist almost forgotten, thanks Fil
Thanks for the introduction to Ms. Lynn. I love seeing a woman playing the guitar at the expert level. I'll add her to my female guitar hero's list. It gives me hope that one day I'll be able to play a recognizable song.
Good golly! Don't know her but loved her and the go go dancers. Just what we need now. Thanks for another trip down memory lane.
Singing in pitch, while playing guitar - all while wearing high heels, which greatly increases the difficulty.
C'mon Fil, please demonstrate. 😄😄😄
not to mention the racist sh!t going on at that time, whites making blacks use the back doors or no doors...
I saw her perform about 20 years ago in New Orleans at an event called the Ponderosa Stomp. Why didn't I hear of her before? I was a teenager then and of course I knew everything, just ask my parents
I'm ashamed to say I've never heard of her. She's incredible!🙂
Wonderful voice! Not many women playing lead guitar at that time. Nice!

You don't get to see a lefty on the guitar often. Thanks Fil!
Billy Cox, Hendrix's bassist is in the shows backing band.
I want that Tele!
A bit of showmanship in there too! It’s around 2:00 that you see her fret hand slowly going up the neck while she hits that open string (E, I think)...ears and eyes start having an argument. Beautiful smile Fil 💕
Please analyze Leon Russell - Concert for Bangladesh performance.
Love this Fil, thanks for sharing. Do you use any of these old school playing techniques in your own work, and if so how?
I use a pick mostly using hybrid picking too. I only play fingerstyle for teaching purposes really as it's not part of my own music's kind of sound!
Awesome piano too...
Fil thanks for video ,top notch ! REQUEST :Audience from "House on the Hill" album," Raviole" !
