    Great video. My dad always raved about the post war side prior to the babes breaking through. My family lived in Davyhulme at the time as did many of the team in club houses. These were the days when the fans could relate to the players. Those days are long gone now I’m afraid.

    Amazing striker, remember him as a kid, what a shot! Great memories of being in England back then. RIP legend.

    My favorite player during the 1940-50 season.I am 91 and followed united form 1942 when they were playing at Maine Rd during the war. Chas Warburton

      Brilliant, and thanks for watching the video, probably my oldest-ever viewer :). Hope the footage brought back some good memories. When posting this on social media, a lot of Reds state that he was their dad's or grandad's favourite player. He must've been something else, more than mere research can reveal. I'm jealous.

      Many thanks! I especially like covering the older United legends as there's so little about them on RUclips, it's even better to get feedback like this.

    One of Manchester United's best strikers.

      It's players like this that are a lot of the reason I make these videos. If you check, I have done about 40 'United Legends', and haven't even got to Best, Keano, Cantona and many others. I'd rather current and future Reds look for and find information on, Rowley, Spence, Roberts, Stafford, Carey, Herd and other amazing players who were huge for the club but are more easily forgotten than the Holy Trinity and the Class of '92 etc.

    Loved Jack. Hard as nails, very powerful striker of the ball. Competition to play for England far greater back the as virtually all English Clubs players were from the British Isles. The majority being English.

      Jack is one of those, like Martin Buchan, whose video I made got a really high positive response too, when other, more 'mainstream' legends, had a more muted response.
      Hope you enjoyed the vid, getting footage other than the FA Cup or England was very difficult in that era.

      It's easy to forget the great players from just after the War, and Jack Rowley was probably the best...but I wasn't there so I can't really so that with a massive amount of authority.

    Jack was born in 1918 and not 1920 I write a book about that 5859 season at Plymouth, including a 17 page chapter about. I interviewed his daughter Sue and she confirmed his dob. He lied about age to get more contract

    • @gadaboutunited
      @gadaboutunited  2 года назад +1

      All I can say is that there are contradictory sources. I have books that I researched that gave 1920 as his birth year, others say 1918, I had to go with one. If he lied on official forms, it's not really common knowledge and so you'll have to forgive me. I don't like being wrong but this one was a judgement call, but I would like to have the source/verification of his lying Steve, so would be happy for you to link up to it, cheers.

      If only I'd seen your piece first, before I did the vid, it would've been a good titbit. Fair play Steve, thanks for the info.

      @@statsman6949 Fair play to you and Steve. Wish it were better known, it would've gone in the vid! :)
      Amazing info.

    Until 1970, Swansea Town was the official name. Swansea was made a city on 1970., hence Swansea City.
