      Greg does Makos Aku nearly perfectly in the Final episode when he redubs the opening of the orginal three seasons and voices Aku sending Jack back into the past. So Akus voice in Season 5 is most certainly a directional choice.

  • @whoopingmuffin9700
    @whoopingmuffin9700 2 года назад +146

    Greg is pretty much able to do 90% of mako's voice. Its as close as anyone can get without being mako himself.
    the 10% lost are things that would be only possible with his voice, the coarseness of aku's voice as mako strains his throat slightly, and the warmth of iroh's voice as he speaks.
    No amount of practice or imitation could ever recreate those things, gregs voice is functionally a perfect imitiation within the bounds what an imitation is and not just literally having his voice

      +Fullmetal Gamer: Indeed he did. One can hear the difference if you know to listen for it, but if you don't know about them switching voices there, you don't really think about it. Oh definitely. That more coarse, aged Asian voice brought out the accented words much better than Baldwins. But Greg is doing a really good job.

  • @awsomeboxhead
    @awsomeboxhead 7 лет назад +396

    The main issue with Greg's Aku is that it seems like Greg is struggling to reach those higher pitches. Greg sounded much better during Aku's therapy scene, as Aku was using a more calmer, Iroh type voice. Greg just needs a little more shout in his voice, and needs a scene where he's trolling Jack.

    • @kevincass9917
      @kevincass9917 7 лет назад +43

      Well, the thing is Greg's Aku is meant to be a bit more depressed, and you can hear it in the way he speaks. Shouting in his voice would only ruin the idea that Aku is kind of depressed at the idea that Jack is still in the future and won't die naturally.

    Gennedy originally thought to make an all new voice for Aku for the recent season. However, he eventually decided to try to match the original Aku.
    However, I wouldn't be surprised if he instructed Greg to make it his own as well. Iroh was straight up duplication, while Aku is certainly different, yet similar. I'm fairly certain this might have been on purpose. Kind of like a "look, we'll never fully replace Mako. We might as well make it unique while at the same time similar."
    In the end, it's Aku. Sort of a different voice, but it's certainly still Aku.
    I'm kinda glad they went this way.

      Last year, Phil Lamar stated that during a recording session for Season 5, Mako's daughter and grandson came in to the studio and heard Greg Baldwin's Aku, his daughter said it sounded very much like Mako's Aku. That to me was enough to accept Baldwin as the new Aku.

    Mako's Iroh has a certain sound that you can hear, like a slight whisper. Greg's seems a bit thicker, but it is very very close as it should be since he trained under him. Aku's voice, yeah you can hear the difference, but it's not completely bad. He added his own spin, but still honoring Mako which I think is important to note. Greg can copy him, sure, but he doesn't just copy, he pays respect in doing so. I think that's the difference.

    Greg did a wonderful job with Uncle Iroh, you almost can't tell the difference between them. It's noticeable with Aku, not that I don't think Greg is trying. He may still improve by the time Samurai Jack Season 5 ends.

    Honestly, I think he's the perfect understudy and sounds like Mako down to a T to the point that if you didn't know who Mako was or that he passed away then you wouldn't notice a change. At least with Iroh.
    I think the same can be said for Aku, BUT, oddly, I think that counts mostly for all of Aku's dialogue in Se5ep2 that comes AFTER the cut off point in this video. Because all the dialogue leading UP to the cut off point, as in all the example that was used in this very video, that is where he sounds similar but different. Why? Maybe because he was getting back into it? Who knows?
    But if you'd compared all the lines AFTER this cut off point, you know, the lines where he's giving himself therapy, then that would have sounded very identical to Mako. :P

    I just watched through the entire Last Airbender show and never once even thought that Iroh had a different voice actor; Greg put so much respect and care into replicating the vocal performance of Mako that it was seamless, but they all did something wonderful with Little Soldier Boy, leading me to search up who Mako is (And getting confused with a result from Korra, but I eventually figured it out), and found out how much more impactful that song was. I cried when it was Iroh just singing it for his lost son, but now it hits even harder. Beautiful.

    Greg Baldwin gets the timbre and inflections down pretty much perfectly, but the delivery is noticeably smoother and more refined. You can hear the age and roughness in Mako's voice where Baldwin's rendition is ironically how I picture a younger Iroh would sound. A very good replacement all things considered though. I'm glad they did what they did instead of giving Iroh no dialogue for season 3.

    I got to meet Greg Baldwin at a panel at sci fi valley con and he told us the story how he got a soundtrack to a show when he was young and Mako was the lead in the show. So he unknowingly was working on an impression of mako for about 30 years.
    And he talked about how terrified he was taking the reins of a big character like Iroh as well as replacing the legend Mako was. And I don’t remember if it was his first day recording as Iroh or Aku but Mako’s daughter and Grandson were there (no pressure) and when he started she was sobbing because as Greg put it “even a serviceable impression of her father gave her the feeling he was briefly back from the dead”.
