I’m Korean but I grew up in Hong Kong when I was young. I had an auntie named Jovie, we were able to pay her salary but after the 2008 economic crash my parents couldn’t afford to keep her due to our financial status. I loved her to death and she loved me, I basically considered her my mother. She brought me to the Philippines with her for no added cost whilst my parents were abroad working - basically had no contact with my parents for 2 years until they decided to come and take me away. I was so extremely sad as they didn’t tell me it would be my last time seeing her again since they knew I’d flip out leaving the Philippines. I love you auntie Jovie ❤

Auntie Amy is very articulate in speaking English, I think she's one of the most intelligent students during her school days. Poverty drove most of us to work rather than continue our studies, and then there our relatives and friends who think we have all the money in the world just because we are working abroad, a sad reality in the Philippines but praying all is well for Auntie Amy and her husband. And thank you Charlyn for visiting her, this means so much to her. I remember how my mum thinks of the children she took care of when she was an OFW in HK. :)
My mom was a helper in HK for 29 yrs, 27 yrs with the same employer. She suffered from stroke in 2017 that forced her to stop. We kept an open communication and up until now they still support my mother every time she gets hospitalized, would always send money during her bdays and sends bday card with sweet messages.
Your mother is lucky to have employer like them,most employers here in Hk if they know their helper is sick they will not renew their contract and some of them they treat them bad until the helper is the one to give up and go back to Philippines
This helper did more than just help around the home, she made it her job to raise a good human being. Taught her values and took ownership of her future. That's remarkable. As a mother now, I am looking for a helper who won't simply spoil my child but reinforce the values I want to inculcate in him. She was such a valuable co-parent. Incredible.
It's said that people are economic prisoners like this. They're not literal prisoners but you know what I mean. In another country looking after another family away from their own. It's sad.
You're absolutely right. Auntie Amy is more than just a nanny-she's a guiding force in Charlyn's life. She taught her how to truly read and understand, cared deeply for her well-being, and even instilled in her the wisdom to manage money wisely. These aren’t things you’d typically expect from a nanny. Our house help, Auntie Belen, came to live with our family in Manila in 1960, two years before I was born. She was a second mother to me and my three older siblings. She never married and became part of our family for 37 years. We were ecstatic when she was granted US visa to attend my wedding in 1992, wherein she walked in with my then widowed mom as “Auntie of the bride”. She retired in her home province and was regularly visited by us siblings until her passing in 2017, at the age of 89. Miss her so much. ❤
And she left the Philippines to work in Singapore at 19, probably did not even attend college. She could have been like a teacher or doctor given the opportunity, instead she became a professional mother.

This is true 100%. Here in Canada I worked with Filipinos for years. They are such happy and loving people. They take care of elderly and little children like their own family. Very warm people at heart.
Filipinos and Nagas have a very similar approach to caretaking. But I say Filipinos have been consistent with their way of life while the Nagas are getting swayed by easy money and corruption. I wish our Filipinos brothers and sisters can come here to Nagaland. Teach us what we lost in the pursuit of perceived happiness... Beautiful documentary. Authentic and pure

The people of the Philippines have gentle mannerism, they have mild tempers while at the same time being very friendly and open and they show affection much more readily than other asian countries. This combination i think is what makes filipino people so wholesome and they make the best caretakers as a result.

Not really, that's pretty much Middle Class in the Provinces. The issue is Singapore is one of the least corrupt nations in the world and they've carved a clean city state out of a swamp with a population of 5 million. The Philippines is one of the most corrupt and although lovely people they just spend all day robbing each other (as Auntie describes with 'lending' to a friend). They've even elected the biggest family of thieves back to steal again! A population of 114 million, all the resources and beauty of their Islands and they can't even organise running tap water. Once the best educated people in ASEAN... Now the worst. Tragic, and I'm married to a Filipina!

“It is worth it, Darling” I bawled my eyes out. 😭 my aunt is also a domestic helper in Singapore. She went there when she was around 24yrs old, she turned 40 this year and still no family of her own. Now i’m praying that she will find her partner in life or a Charlyn of her own.
Unfortunately, many people didn't realize that many Filipino Nannies are willing to SACRIFICE their own happiness just to be with the children of their employers! This case is one example of such, I hope this will be an eye opener for all the employers out there to treat your helpers with dignity and respect! 😊

This is so heartwarming. Even today you see a lot of family overseas domestic helpers being the mums to young kids from birth. These kids see their helpers as their mums. Women like Auntie Amy deserve so much praise for sharing their love for kids as the kids are their own. I hope Auntie Amy can be financially supported in creating a provision shop for sustenance. Is there some kind of gofundme avenue to give back to her?
So lucky there is so one being moms for the young baby and siblings at home. I am a 63 year old retired man living in Spore. I teared several times watching this very heartwarming video. If I am in a similar position and if my finances allow me, I will little by little do my bit to improve Aunty Amy's living conditions starting with what's most important in day-to-day living. Like for example, a good night's sleep is important. If her mattress is old and sunken, I will replace her mattress. Then perhaps a water heater, if she doesn't have one, so that she don't need to endure cold showers anymore. That's what I mean by little by little starting with the things we need and use everyday. The walls in her home need a layer of plastering and painting but that can wait. The little things like a mattress, water heater, a cupboard, a fridge, ceiling or wall fans etc are more important. How fast I can do things and how far I can go will depend on my finances. But that's me.

Dear, if you are reading this, I hope you don't find it weird to be sending money to support your Auntie. As a Filipino, we also had a long-term maid who took care of us, 3 siblings since birth. When she got older, we contributed to her food and medicine. Since we were 3, we were able to give her Php15K/month which is more than enough. Other people might find it weird but it was the best decision to contribute. I did not have regrets at all, I even regret that I wasnt able to contribute much earlier in her life. Yes, she is a mother. And yes, they gave their life as an unconditional service for us, and to a fault that's why life is difficult for them now. And yes, they need our help. But thank you for your story. I am crying tears of joy. It reminded me of my Inang(mother) who gave her life for me.

Our domestic helpers deserve to be called heroes too. There should be a statue to represent them. They sacrificed a lot and took care of other people and send money back to the Philippines. I took care of a family from Sydney(in Kuala Lumpur). The dad is an expat but had to go back to Sydney after their contract so i also went back home to the Philippines. Since then we nevee had any contact. I tried to keep in touch with them because the two kids were very dear to me coz i took care of them mostly, but they never reach out. I was sad

I cant stop being emotional watching this.. It takes a lot to take care of a child, the more if its not even yours.. I also feel that auntie devoted her life too much working abroad and that gave her no opportunity to have her own family till its very too late to have kids.. I did not regret it at all" was the perfect line to end this documentary.. just to share, I take care of my son who is only 15 and has cancer.. Thank you for sharing this heartwarming documentary with us! Gratefully, we’d two very responsible, caring, helpful domestic helpers at home before. They’re Linda and Yaumi who came from Indonesia. Both of them worked very hard and took good care of our child. They even taught our child to read storybooks when we’re busy at work. They treated our child as their own child so we treated them as our family members as well. Much appreciated for their great help and support at home. Although both of them went back their homes now, we stay in touch with them frequently. Thank you so much for all these kind and helpful Aunties who help many families a lot indeed! Hope everything goes well with them and their families! Hopefully, we can visit them in the near future.

My mom was a domestic helper in HK for 20 years, and her last 15 years to a single employer taking care of two children. When me and 3 of my siblings already finished college and already have jobs, we kept asking her to go home and retire. However, she kept arguing that that she can’t leave the kids until they’re a bit grown up. Only when she had to get a surgery, myomectomy in the Philippines that we’re finally able to convince her to retire. In the following years till she passed away, she kept receiving gifts from the children and parents. They also kept in touch with my mom every now and then. As a son, I feel so grateful that she had found a wonderful family who loved and treasured her. 🙏

This is so touching. So many Filipinos work as nannies out of country just to send money back to their family in the Philippines most have kids but were not able to care for their own kids just to survive. This one is sad because she didn’t get to have her own kids just to take care of other couple’s kid. But I must say she is blessed to work with a nice family in Singapore. They are both blessed to have each other. I just pray for Auntie Amy that she and her husband will still fulfill their dreams together at least they have each other and pray that they are always safe. For Charlyn God bless you too. When I saw Auntie Amy's house, I immediately knew that something went wrong. There's no way her house would be like that after working abroad for that long because I knew a domestic helper that worked for 5 years in Singapore and was able to build a huge house. For her to not pursue her "friend" for scamming her, I can see that Auntie Amy really does have a good heart and is also wise. I hope things get better for her and her husband soon! Being a small time farmer in the Philippines can't let you live a comfortable and secured living. I pray that she always stays healthy and strong. May the days get better for her soon!
I think judging from her kind and nurturing personality, most of her money also went to helping her family back in the Phillipines. These extended families are also very large.

With no employment opportunities, women from the Philippines play an important role to be breadwinners as domestic help. It is a very decent job. Thanks to many of them They’re able to support families. Treat them well they are heroes because of their sacrifices.

I think this documentary missed to highlight that Auntie lost her life savings from a scam (friend who borrowed money). This is a common sad story for OFWs who either lost life savings because of scam or because of helping family members.

Auntie Amy is very articulate in speaking English, I think she's one of the most intelligent students during her school days. Poverty drove most of us to work rather than continue our studies, and then there our relatives and friends who think we have all the money in the world just because we are working abroad, a sad reality in the Philippines but praying all is well for Auntie Amy and her husband. And thank you Charlyn for visiting her, this means so much to her. I remember how my mum thinks of the children she took care of when she was an OFW in HK. :)
My mom was a helper in HK for 29 yrs, 27 yrs with the same employer. She suffered from stroke in 2017 that forced her to stop. We kept an open communication and up until now they still support my mother every time she gets hospitalized, would always send money during her bdays and sends bday card with sweet messages.

This helper did more than just help around the home, she made it her job to raise a good human being. Taught her values and took ownership of her future. That's remarkable. As a mother now, I am looking for a helper who won't simply spoil my child but reinforce the values I want to inculcate in him. She was such a valuable co-parent. Incredible.

Our house help, Auntie Belen, came to live with our family in Manila in 1960, two years before I was born. She was a second mother to me and my three older siblings. She never married and became part of our family for 37 years. We were ecstatic when she was granted US visa to attend my wedding in 1992, wherein she walked in with my then widowed mom as “Auntie of the bride”. She retired in her home province and was regularly visited by us siblings until her passing in 2017, at the age of 89. Miss her so much. ❤

This is true 100%. Here in Canada I worked with Filipinos for years. They are such happy and loving people. They take care of elderly and little children like their own family. Very warm people at heart.
Filipinos and Nagas have a very similar approach to caretaking. But I say Filipinos have been consistent with their way of life while the Nagas are getting swayed by easy money and corruption. The people of the Philippines have gentle mannerism, they have mild tempers while at the same time being very friendly and open and they show affection much more readily than other asian countries. This combination i think is what makes filipino people so wholesome and they make the best caretakers as a result.

Not really, that's pretty much Middle Class in the Provinces. The issue is Singapore is one of the least corrupt nations in the world and they've carved a clean city state out of a swamp with a population of 5 million. The Philippines is one of the most corrupt and although lovely people they just spend all day robbing each other (as Auntie describes with 'lending' to a friend). They've even elected the biggest family of thieves back to steal again! A population of 114 million, all the resources and beauty of their Islands and they can't even organise running tap water. Once the best educated people in ASEAN... Now the worst. Tragic, and I'm married to a Filipina!

This is so heartwarming. Even today you see a lot of family overseas domestic helpers being the mums to young kids from birth. These kids see their helpers as their mums. I am a 63 year old retired man living in Spore. I teared several times watching this very heartwarming video. If I am in a similar position and if my finances allow me, I will little by little do my bit to improve Aunty Amy's living conditions starting with what's most important in day-to-day living. Like for example, a good night's sleep is important. If her mattress is old and sunken, I will replace her mattress. Then perhaps a water heater, if she doesn't have one, so that she don't need to endure cold showers anymore. That's what I mean by little by little starting with the things we need and use everyday. The walls in her home need a layer of plastering and painting but that can wait. The little things like a mattress, water heater, a cupboard, a fridge, ceiling or wall fans etc are more important. How fast I can do things and how far I can go will depend on my finances. But that's me.

Dear, if you are reading this, I hope you don't find it weird to be sending money to support your Auntie.
As a Filipino, we also had a long-term maid who took care of us, 3 siblings since birth.
When she got older, we contributed to her food and medicine. Since we were 3, we were able to give her Php15K/month which is more than enough.
Other people might find it weird but it was the best decision to contribute. I did not have regrets at all, I even regret that I wasnt able to contribute much earlier in her life.
Yes, she is a mother. And yes, they gave their life as an unconditional service for us, and to a fault that's why life is difficult for them now. And yes, they need our help.
But thank you for your story. I am crying tears of joy. It reminded me of my Inang(mother) who gave her life for me.

Our domestic helpers deserve to be called heroes too. There should be a statue to represent them. They sacrificed a lot and took care of other people and send money back to the Philippines. I took care of a family from Sydney(in Kuala Lumpur). The dad is an expat but had to go back to Sydney after their contract so i also went back home to the Philippines. Since then we nevee had any contact. I tried to keep in touch with them because the two kids were very dear to me coz i took care of them mostly, but they never reach out. I was sad

Thank you for sharing this heartwarming documentary with us! Gratefully, we’d two very responsible, caring, helpful domestic helpers at home before. They’re Linda and Yaumi who came from Indonesia. Both of them worked very hard and took good care of our child. They even taught our child to read storybooks when we’re busy at work. They treated our child as their own child so we treated them as our family members as well.
Much appreciated for their great help and support at home. Although both of them went back their homes now, we stay in touch with them frequently.

My mom was a domestic helper in HK for 20 years, and her last 15 years to a single employer taking care of two children.
When me and 3 of my siblings already finished college and already have jobs, we kept asking her to go home and retire. However, she kept arguing that that she can’t leave the kids until they’re a bit grown up. Only when she had to get a surgery, myomectomy in the Philippines that we’re finally able to convince her to retire.
In the following years till she passed away, she kept receiving gifts from the children and parents. They also kept in touch with my mom every now and then.
As a son, I feel so grateful that she had found a wonderful family who loved and treasured her. 🙏
♥️ One thing is for sure, Filipinos touch lives of people all around the world. As a Overseas Filipino Worker myself working as a nurse here in the UK, we looked after and give the best care to our patients as if they are our own family. Bless Auntie Amy ♥️

So many Filipinos work as nannies out of country just to send money back to their family in the Philippines most have kids but were not able to care for their own kids just to survive. This one is sad because she didn’t get to have her own kids just to take care of other couple’s kid. But I must say she is blessed to work with a nice family in Singapore. They are both blessed to have each other. I just pray for Auntie Amy that she and her husband will still fulfill their dreams together at least they have each other and pray that they are always safe. For Charlyn God bless you too. When I saw Auntie Amy's house, I immediately knew that something went wrong. There's no way her house would be like that after working abroad for that long because I knew a domestic helper that worked for 5 years in Singapore and was able to build a huge house.
For her to not pursue her "friend" for scamming her, I can see that Auntie Amy really does have a good heart and is also wise. I hope things get better for her and her husband soon! Being a small time farmer in the Philippines can't let you live a comfortable and secured living. I pray that she always stays healthy and strong. May the days get better for her soon!
I think judging from her kind and nurturing personality, most of her money also went to helping her family back in the Phillipines. These extended families are also very large.

I think this documentary missed to highlight that Auntie lost her life savings from a scam (friend who borrowed money). This is a common sad story for OFWs who either lost life savings because of scam or because of helping family members.

I have an Indonesia helper for 15 plus years and I thought she will still work for us till she retire but sadly she was diagnosed with cancer recently and going through a tough treatments right now ... the saddest part was she was going back after her treatments . She is a family member to us and it broke my heart thinking she will have to leave soon.. Thanks for this heart warming video and wishes Amy the best of her life now ...
