  • The scale of the problem of Youth crime is a growing concern. Many young offenders are also victims of broken homes, poverty and domestic violence. They have complex emotional needs which requires a balance of welfare and justice models. How can the society contribute to therapeutic inclusion and intervention philosophy, for greater reduction in recidivism compared with punitive approaches? What started out as a small volunteering project turned into so much for Sachi Maniar, who started Project Ashiyana in 2013. In the years since, she has worked to help and improve the lives of all the children at Umkerhadi children’s home, to help them learn, grow, and realise their full potential despite the conditions they have found themselves in. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at www.ted.com/tedx

Sachi, your commitment and advocacy for a cause that almost always is misunderstood; for justice that is almost always denied, is truly commendable. Ashiyana -may it continue to provide the space to be heard ,understood and move on

Amar killed his friend! You talk about how his father and his community disowned him. What about his friend's family? They will never see their beloved son/brother again because of Amar. We all know right from wrong at a very early age and your circumstances growing up don't absolve you of responsibility especially for something like taking someone's life. Amar should count himself lucky he was released at 18 because if it were up to me he'd still be locked up.

Totally Agree! Love must live in the soil of justice, benevolence without justice is nothing but meaningless and it'll even leads to a humanitarian catastrophe! They should not punish less just because he is a child or because he is a victim of society! The real victim will be ignored and that's totally inhuman and intolerable!

That is why the juvenile punishment exist, but what after the punishment, what after he has paid for his sins?
