I found the problem with practicing without an amp is that you don't get to learn the art of muting properly or learn how to deal with feedback.

    • @DavidRavenMoon

@@DavidRavenMoon depends what you play, sweep picking for example is almost required to practice with an amp to figure out how how to get it to sound clean with distortion and learn the proper muting techniques. you can sweep all day clean and have it sound great but as soon as you throw on some metal distortion all your mistakes suddenly come out and it sounds terrible

Little late to this video but I played unplugged for years as a bedroom guitarist because the people at home hated it. Then once when I started playing with Gain I sounded terrible, like I just picked up the instrument. Especially for my main stuff being metal and lead I couldn’t mute anything the notes didn’t ring out and overall I had no feel for it. Then I talked to a few people better that me that told that playing with high gain on bridge pickup is difficult and amplifies every mistake. So now I’m trying to clean up my technique and get good at this now.

Rob, way long time ago when I was still a teenager and starting out with the guitar, I played with no amp for over a year. I think it was more like two! This was back in the 70s, when inexpensive ANYTHING guitar-related was either non-existent or pure trash. I loved the guitar very well to have put up with having no amp, trying to play strings that were heavy enough to use on an acoustic(!), and of course the pain that all beginning guitarists feel until they grow calluses thick enough to serve. Whereas I have no plans to go amp-less during practice, I recognize that your suggestion has merit in another arena: Setup! Playing without an amp will help to expose weaknesses ... not only the player's, but the guitar's as well. This could be critical when planning or assessing the effects of an adjustment. You won't have the amp's output obscuring fret buzz and other noises that might need adjusting out. Thanks for this vid and for the suggestion!😎❤️️🎸‼️

Being able to run my Headrush pedalboard into my headphones has been awesome. Playing guitar for church, so much of my tone is the pedals in my signal chain, so being able to work with that with no noise in the house is great. Before that, I had a Vox AC4, which is a great tone that you can dial in with the master volume pretty low and then crank it when it comes to mike it up.

I had an old bass amp where I would turn all the nobs to max to get a little taste of what distortion could be and it was 1000x better than practicing without an amp.
    My list would be:
    - Roland cube (more affordable)
    - Orange Crush (small) and a good quality pedal (metal muff is sick)

  • @phel21

Just about any recent amp-sim through a pair of affordable studio-monitors is fine for home/practise use. Another option for those who already have one or more great tube amps is to use that into a loadbox with cab-sim into monitors, for example a UA OX. Granted, the OX ain't cheap, but not so bad considering what you've already spent if you're playing boutique-amps. With it you can use whatever pedals and gear you otherwise use with your band or on stage.

I've got the special green one with the 103 ext cab and power supply. I only paid 89.99 for the whole setup NIB. Making it a 6 w amp. I use it 99% of the time for my stereo sound for the TV when not using it to jam. MY wife loves, as do I the great clean sound the speakers put out. She doesn't so much love how hard this little boogerwill jam if you want to. Lol it's hard to beat for the money, and hard to beat in general for low volume amp with gobs of tone without rattling pictures off of the wall. It out performs a lot of other intro combos out there. I had a VOX valvetronix 20 watt tube amp with way too much crap to dial in. This Fly3 w/ ext cab blows it out if the water ( let me stress, for a home practice amp, the VOX VT 20 could gig). Fly3 can fill a 12x12 rm so easily and with easy to use controls. You can be unplugged to jamming in 45 seconds. Way underrated.

Thank you for the great review Rob. I'm going to say that I currently own a Spark 40, Katana Artist, JCM 900 full stack with lead 1960 cabs, a Carvin SX-200 (with British series speakers, which I love), a Line 6 spyder III and a Peavey Chorus 212. I love and hate each one of them for various reasons but if I had to go with one of them it would probably be a Boss Katana product. I kinda get tired of messing with apps on my phone and really just prefer using knobs for making amp adjustments. I'm frustrated with the Spark 40 tone...or maybe it's the speakers...not 100% sure, but I still use it often. A buddy of mine has a THR10ii and I have a love/hate relation ship with it as well - but I do like the brighter sound from it for sure. Which, now as I type...I wonder why I never tried out the Katana headphones...thank you for the reminder on those. Anyways, a lot of everything I play through just falls short in some way shape or form. The one thing I have noticed is that having an amp with two (in stereo L/R) speakers seems to make the playing experience "a little" better. If I could have gotten the Katana Artist with two speakers, that would have been great but then that really isn't a practice amp anymore, lol. I wish I could swap out the Spark 40 speakers with something that doesn't sound as muffled but then I have a feeling the amp might suffer some other sound issue. Thank you for the review of these amps!!

Positive Grid Spark Amplifier I owned for about a month ,and sold it yesterday because I don't like the way sound comes out of the speakers.. The best part of it is the use of the Blu"tooth , but mine always took a lot of time to sign on, and too much messing online and not enough playing. . It just has that cheap beginners Amp sound to it. I know a lot of you guy's have them, and love them, but I never connected with it. I have to admit though I owned a Fractal Axe Effects 2 for awhile unfortunately it had to go do to COVID19, and my job getting cut because we worked with Special needs kids in school. .. When all returns to normal I'm thinking Rev Amps G20 lunchbox, or Fractal Axe Effects 3 with 2 FRFR speaker cabinets.... Nothing wrong with picking up a decent acoustic guitar to practice on as well.☺. Gets those fingertips in shape faster too.😁🎸

I like the first choice because whenever I plug into an amp, I spend way to much time tweaking my sound than I do practicing.
Just grabbing my guitar gets much more done.

Great video, as always Rob! I personally use the Bugera V22 W at home even though I have a Boss Katana 100W but the Bugera has a low power sound much nicer than the Katana! Can we hope for a demonstration of the Bugera V 22 in the future! Best regards from Croatia!

I wish the Katana was around in the late 80's, all we had were nasty little solid state amps that burped & farted a lot. My son is learning guitar using a Katana, he has no idea how lucky he is. Take care Chappers!

Fantastic amps, I'm afraid I can only afford the first :-p . I'd love it if you were to give some of the cheap and cheerful options like the NUX mighty amp series (air, lite and plug) a spin.

I have played my electrics unplugged for 50 years. That DOESN’T mean that I always play it unplugged, which some of the responders seems to think that is what it means. The best place to play is in the bathroom with many hard surfaces. You get a tiny hint of reverb, the guitar sounds loud plus you would be surprised at how great a good, resonate electric sounds unplugged. I play my electrics mostly unplugged these days. Back in my band days it was mostly plugged as I was deciphering songs, at band rehearsal or playing clubs. A few of my guitars sound so good unplugged that it is frustrating to not be able to duplicate the tone through the pick ups.

Currently waiting for an order from Anderton's and I've been watching guitar videos nigh on every day in anticipation. I've been a follower of their channel for a while now and I always found you quite humorous :) Watched a "shop tour" video earlier this evening from a few years back and when Lee picked up a Chapman guitar from the rack you said you'd never heard of them. "Bit disrespectful!" I thought 🙄 Then I came across your channel and I feel like such a tool. Loving your playing, loving your content and loving your guitars. Good luck for 2021 👍🏼

Great video Rob. I reckon this is particularly popular because most of us don't gig and play at home, esp now, so these are the amps or non amps we need. Btw, doesn't the Boss GT-1 have the same tech as the Katana? It appealed to me as I already have amps, including the Cube 80GX, it's cheaper and could just plug it in and avoid the need for yet another amp taking up space. Also good with studio monitors.

I'd also add something like a Marshall Origin 5 or DSL1 as a way of getting into valve amps at a budget entry price. While you lose all the built-in sims, you get to enjoy something completely different. Great for people who already have or are planning to buy some pedals. My DSL1 makes some very nice noises.

    • @TraneFrancks

@Mark Seymour DSL1CR here. I think it's quite an underrated little combo. Genalex Premium Gold Lion tubes in it and a good 9 months of hammering on it has got the speaker nicely broken in. Tele sounds fat and sassy on the bridge pup with the classic gain channel dimed. LP Special is otherworldly.

I love my ENGL Ironball for a solid practice small lunchbox tube metal amp. Can use headphones, power soak from 20 to 1 watt and awesome sound in small cab or larger cabs. For a tiny travel amp, the Vox metal pocket amp with headphone jack, battery powered with onboard FX and plug into guitar is super awesome. Great sound and won't bother anyone yet can practice anywhere.

    Rob, great video.
I've had a Katana 50 for 2 years now and love it for bedroom playing.
Now that our is band is set to play out I think I will be buying the Katana 100 with the line out so I don't have to mic it.
Always played tube amps and this really has a tube amp feel.
    Can't beat the price.
Ditch the mic and buy the foot pedal that the Katana 100 uses.
My wah sounds great through it also.

I bought a Katana 50 (and later a mini) largely because of your recommendation and how good you make it sound. I was not disappointed! I'm not gonna say they are as good as valve amps that cost 5 times as much, but for the money I literally do not think they can be beat. I love mine. PS. I want one of those picks! Haha. Also, when is the next clockwork album dropping?
