I remeber 3 years ago i saw this, and it was the first time I saw a sweep picking video or even found out what that was. I thought this was the coolest guy in the world lol. It's cool to stumble upon this again and actually understanding. I can sweep pick now yay lol
Dude, not only do you explain things very well, your tone is killer and your vibrato is sick! I am trying to ween myself off of the ol' whammy bar and just vibrato with my fingers. I grew so dependent on the bar, I lost all my finger strength. Your technique is my ultimate goal. Thanks for the post.
thanks for this howie. i told myself i was going to add sweeps to my arsonal, and this was the first video/tutorial i found. it took about three months for me, but i can finally pull these when our band practices.
of all my years finding the how to sweep... this is the only one that fucken taught me how to sweep.... everyone thumbs up if this was the clip that gave you that foundation // outline...
Brutal! You are very articulate when explaining how things work. Easy to understand and a great practice session. Nice worn in axe too! Looks like its an old friend who has been with you from the git go
Howie, thanks for making this video available :) I have been trying to figure out how to do this, and this is very helpful! You're an awesome guitarist!
Thanks for the lesson man; it took me like a year and a half to get it right but I finally made it. I feel more proud of myself with my humble sweep picking than when I got that stupid master in something.
Its an actual 1972 Strat loaded with Dimarzio Virtual Solo pickups. Actually, when this video was filmed, the pickups were called Virtual Vintage Solo and were a tiny bit different than the newer version.
He is a real professor about Sweep :) This is an Useful lesson for Sweep lovers, His guitar is tuned on D#, So If You are going to sound the same go one fret back If watching or half tone if hearing wich is the same issue
@Guitarbaa Whenever you change directions in sweep picking, pick in the direction your changing to. So like you said on a sweep from the first to second to third back to second string, You'd pick up on the first, up on the second, down on the third, down on the second then up on the first.
That is sooooooooooooooooo amazing!!! You are so talented!!! I would love to learn to play the guitar :) I'll keep an eye out for more of your videos :)
I've been practicing this technique for about...I'd say maybe 4 months now and I'm just now starting to get it. patience is the key and start slowly on it. "Before you can run you have to walk." Michael Angelo Batio.
@BuriedAlive7x If you're talking about tuning or just the note Eb in general, it's a half step down from E. Which means if you're using a chromatic tuner, instead of E, it should D#. So if you're wanting to know how to tune to the tuning that Howie's in, starting from the thinnest string, Eb Bb Gb Db Ab Eb, or D# A# F# C# G# D#. Hope that helped your question.lol
I hate sweep picking - when I started learning it I started to sound like 'someone else' so I gave it up - but this is one hell of a cool video. Nice, clear, and a great little guitar as well. Thumbs up!
thanks a lot man ! This is exactly what i was searching for,now i can watch tutorials about it.Before i was searching like "how to make guitar scream" and strange results were coming ... now i got it,thanks :D
Nothing I can find wrong with this lesson. FAR clearer than other lessons on da tube and gives a reasonable starting arpeggio (or whatever you call it)
@megaluisdeth - Actually, Hammett used a similar lick in Creeping Death but it is without the hammered G string 12th fret note at the bottom, and the top note stays on the 17th fret of the high E string the whole time. The bad part though, is that the chord underneath Hammet at the time he is playing it is an E (not an A), so it actually sounds terrible where he does it.
@zebi62mr also try to do it without distortion on because you'll get this annoying ringing if you have alot of gain on. when you have it down and ready to shred time to do it with lots of distortion and try to mute each note with your palm and you'll get a wicked clean sounding arpeggio
@jakemk21 what i do when im practicing it is tie a shirt or some cloth over the lower frets to stop the ringing. but you will slowly get cleaner with practice
I liked how you said not to play the notes to close together otherwise it will sound like a chord. I also liked you saying to lift the fingers quickly.
@whatthedom start doing stretch fingering exercises. It will help you break out of "the box." I couldnt do it at all but now im very comfortable with it.
Thank you Howie an F-P-E. This lesson was awesome, but i still have a few problems. 1: When i start sweeping, and take my finger off the 13th fret of the B string, the open B string starts ringing and that makes it sound bad. 2: When i do the pull-off from the 17th fret, i almost every time accidentally pull the string off the fretboard. Thanks for your help!
Hey man great lesson, can i ask you a question? When im doing a 3 string sweep, when i get to the High E i pick it 2 times, right? Im asking you this because i cant really understand english.
nice lesson and why you have those pickups so down to the body ,i know it makes a warmer dark tone that's make it loggic i think strat's has brighter sound.
12 years ago I watched this video. I still dream of having a Fender like this.
I remeber 3 years ago i saw this, and it was the first time I saw a sweep picking video or even found out what that was. I thought this was the coolest guy in the world lol. It's cool to stumble upon this again and actually understanding. I can sweep pick now yay lol

He is a real professor about Sweep :) This is an Useful lesson for Sweep lovers, His guitar is tuned on D#, So If You are going to sound the same go one fret back If watching or half tone if hearing wich is the same issue
Great tutorial dude! Clear, and very easy to follow explanation.
That fretboard is gorgeous!
@Guitarbaa Whenever you change directions in sweep picking, pick in the direction your changing to. So like you said on a sweep from the first to second to third back to second string, You'd pick up on the first, up on the second, down on the third, down on the second then up on the first.

this guy is awesome. best lesson ever.
Nothing looks better than a beat down strat in the hands of a good player......
Beautiful strat!!!
sweeping is hard but it's sooooooo worth it. its really really fun.
really cool lesson, the way he explains and demonstrates makes enough sense my cat could do it.
I'm still practicing this sweep example. I can almost play in his speed now
@zebi62mr also try to do it without distortion on because you'll get this annoying ringing if you have alot of gain on. when you have it down and ready to shred time to do it with lots of distortion and try to mute each note with your palm and you'll get a wicked clean sounding arpeggio
This lesson completely rules!
I LOVE THIS GUITAR!
@jakemk21 what i do when im practicing it is tie a shirt or some cloth over the lower frets to stop the ringing. but you will slowly get cleaner with practice

very good lesson teacher
@2256635 its an old Strat so after years of playing the neck tends to be a bit dirty,or it lacks of CLEANING
that strat has awesome tone
I'm glad to know which pickups this guitar use?
Hey man great lesson, can i ask you a question? When im doing a 3 string sweep, when i get to the High E i pick it 2 times, right? Im asking you this because i cant really understand english.
