For those less chemistry-inclined and with no access to mercury or proper disposal, something similar can be done with baking soda, sugar, and lighter fluid. No boiling or toxic gasses necessary.
With all due respect to Nigel, I am pretty sure there are much more brilliant scientists in RUclips whose work doesn't get recommended because the algorithm doesn’t prioritize depth or scientific value as much as entertainment.

Not that the predictability of it would make it less interesting to see; the danger of it however makes it highly unlikely to be attempted in the foreseeable future since ventilation in space is a quite restrictive endeavour just in terms of keeping the astronauts alive ;)

It was a very popular 'firework' when i was a kid. I remember how strong the smell was as it was burning. Maybe that's why my brain is all mush these days!

When I was a kid in the '70s we bought something very similar to this sold as a toy. They were these black pellets you lit on fire and that would rapidly expand into a long snake shape. I can almost guarantee it was the same or similar chemistry as this Pharaoh's Serpent.
I feel as if this could be used in a horror movie, where a body would have a lump of this in the neck area and the reaction would look as if their spine was mutating and pushing their head off of the body...
