So it kinda seems like the creams are better for a healing bruise effect, maybe one that's a couple of days old, and the alcohol actived colours create a more vivid, fresh bruise? I can't believe I only found your videos a few days ago, you're great!
Thanks for doing this comparison video! It really sealed the deal for which product I choose to go with. As nice as it is to have products for around the eyes, the Ben Nye palette just doesn't have the realistic look I need in my FX products.
That spot on your leg where the paint wouldn't stick was because you weren't letting the alcohol flash off before applying a second layer. Essentially you were wiping away the first layer when trying to add the second. I have had exactly the same problem myself cos I am always hurrying.
Great comparison video! I find that skin illustrator palettes are perfect for simulating bruises and such because it gives that barely there wash of color and the sunken in look that makes it so realistic. Ive played around with cream colors and i have found that if you blend it in insanely well and use the tiniest amount of color you can get a very similar feel as the alcohol activated
That looks like a real bruise!!! It's so realistic and amazing!!! I enjoy playing with regular eye shadows and have found ways to create a "fresh blood" sorta look. Keep doing these! They are amazing!!!
I really loved this video. I've had the skin illustrator palette for a while now but I haven't had much success with it, but watching your technique and seeing how long it really does take to build up layers really helps. I'm definitely more used to using creme makeups so that might explain my impatience with skin illustrator.
Master, I have a question! I want to paint a prosthetic denture (to put it in my mouth), but I don't know if I can use this kind of palettes to paint it. I saw some videos where I think I see people using the Illustrator FX palette to do that, but I don't know if this is correct for this usage or if it have toxic components. Anyway, thank you so much for your videos, they help a lot and you are an amazing artist!
I just bought the mini version of the skin illustrator today..I was working on set for a music video and I only had eyeshadow for bruises... I made it work but I am just in LOVE with how you did this and made it so simple... Lovely 😍xoxo
When using the Ultimatte FX palette from Ben Nye, you can use a few drops of 99% alcohol to create subtle washes that can be layered. When using full strength, be sure to set each layer with Neutral set powder... to keep your colors distinct and don't turn into one color of mud. You can also finish with a light sealing spray like Final seal.
I really hope you answer this! I just got my skin illustrator fx palette and I'm not sure how it goes with the alcohol. Is it like watercolors you dip your wet brush or I see you put the alcohol directly in the paint. Doesn't that make it watery and ruined? Or does it dries down normally? Thank you! I really hope you see this haha Freakmo
From seeing over people I think you can do it either way and it sets hard after I think so it won't matter. Don't take my word on it I don't completely know
+Camila Romero the more alcohol you add the lighter the color will be just like water colo. you cna dip your brush in alcohol or put the alcohol straight into it either way. it all dries normal
usually you can use it either way but if you put the alcohol into the paint just be sure to not flip the pallete over as they will go in to the other colours/ make a big mess
Illustrator palette all the way. Far superior effect, more realistic and easier to adjust in quicker time. It lasts until you remove it and you haven't got to keep going in to top-up and adjust
The SI palette dramatically looks more realistic compared to BN. They're two different textures which results in the final look. Not quite fond of the colors on the BN palette. Although I regularly use BN in my kit, I think when comparing the two, SI is the winner.
I honestly still use my alcohol activated paints around my eyes i'm just very very careful to not get any into my eyes and if my eyes feel irritated i'll stop and let them adjust
I feel like with the alcohol activated makeup was more watery, making a nice vein effect with the sponge, whereas the cream colors were more solid, meaning that they would stay in one spot instead of going through the cracks in yours skin (Could be, IDK. I'm just a beginner ;-;)
hello, i love this type of special effects make up. i do it myself. but your obvously alot better at it then me. i was just wondering how you found out about this make up and how it inspired you to make youtube videos? my main question is did you go to any classes ? i would love to learn more! thank you
Hai~ love your vids. Oh and...I'm kinda new at fx makeup and mess up pretty easily and I usually do the effects on my face. Which one would be better, for the face, the skin illustrator or the Ben Nye media pro?
These look absolutely amazing! But I must ask, where do you buy your 99% IPA from in Aus??? I can't seem to find it anywhere as I'm thinking of buying one of the skin illustrator palletes Thanks!
I have a question, where can you get all these supplies? I'm only ten but people say I'm a great artist and I really love special effects so my dad said where do you get it from so I was just wondering.
this is absolutely AWESOME!!! i'm gonna try and copy what you did with the cream makeup and make a prank to somebody ahaha i wanna see how they react ;)
Actually I had a fake wound on my hand once(practiced 3D cuts) when my dad suddenly decided to visit my grandma and didn't let me enough time to clean up my hand. I guess you know what that led to. At my grandma's place my dad suddenly took my hand and showed it to her, not saying it was fake. My dad has a very... Unique kind of humour. -.-
Very nice work!!! I took a one day workshop on how to understand skin and make fake bruises. Def like the fx palette more then the ben nye which I've loved for a while. Thanks for showing us the difference. =]
I am looking into doing a smurfs makeup look and am trying to research paints, Do you think the cream ones will work, I am afraid they will rub off even if you set them with powder since they will be the entire body. Any suggestions?
Hi Kiana. Thank you very much for your videos / information. I have doubts about skin illustrator. They are activated by isopropyl alcohol (IPA) and safety data of this alcohol says: "Contact with skin and eyes: Flush with water for 15 min in either case you need medical care.". Painting with Alcohol goes to the skin, then ... no problem ?. I've also seen some videos that used for other purposes such alcohol swab and use it directly on the skin. I asked but nobody knows me explain. I imagine that all are equal IPA. Greetings. Sorry for the English.
Hi! I'm just starting out with Special Effects and everything and I have a question. I was wondering, which makeup palette would you recommend for a beginner? I want something of nicer quality than cheap, dollar store face paints but I'm not sure if the palettes you've used in this video are suitable with someone with very little experience :) P.S. I have mildly sensitive skin. Also--this is just a hobby :) Thanks in advance
Hey, Potentiality a bit of a daft question- can an AA makeup palette be used I'm conjunction with a creme palette? recently purchased the media pro and needed an additional palette with more flesh tones. I was looking into the skin illustrator but wanted to make sure the two could be used together before I splashed out. any help would be really greatly appreciated! :)
Hi, Kiana? I was hoping I could ask a question. In a few day I'm going to a convention and the person I'm going to be cosplaying as has a few facial bruises. But the day of the con, it's supposed to be raining, do you have any tips for making make slightly water proof?
@@shubbywubby they may be deemed safe but I'd be concerned about the harshness. And if a character has facial bruising I'd imagine there would be a black eye or 2?
@@michellemelville8979 I've been a certified makeup artist for 4 years ... they are safe but it's up to the person whether or not to use them. For around the eyes and mouth, a silicone based makeup would be better
It's the way she made the different bruises. Alcohol activated paints would definitely be better to me and I think to most people because you can easily build a color on top of another as where in cream paints, they sort of mix together.
Okay, so for the Skin Illustrator, I pour the alcohol into the pallet, but when I'm done what do I do with the alcohol still left on the paints? Do I leave it to dry or..?
99% Alcohol evaporates super fast. You will notice how lower concentration eg. 70% once sprayed take longer to evaporate. For the record, if you wanna disinfect your makeup you go for the 70% IPA as it stays longer on the surface and will kill more bacteria. But the 99% is the only one that works for AA paints. Just mentioning that as 99% IPA is more expensive and this might save you some money.

I have a question on skin illustrator colours and hope someone can help. How well do they work on wax of any kind? For example on scar wax? For some colours just like watercolours the waxy surface would be a problem, the colour pearls off. I am considering getting a skin illustrator palette and wonder if it would also fit to colour selfmade wax-moulages?
you really need to understand the nerves to kinda know how dark and in what stage with what colors will be accurate.. thats a general thought, your technique results to be v cool

tbh id prefer alcohol activated .. you can set the cream paints but some still slip. and with water activated paints if you sweat or come in to any contact with water e.g rain.. humid weather all your work will melt off.
When you're going over and over certain areas and the alcohols starts pulling up the previous work, just powder set it in between, let it dry and then go back in.
Alcohol activated paints (Skin Illustrator) only come off either with 99% alcohol, isopropyl myristate, or baby oil. So yeah ... water does not harm them. Thet don´t smudge or transfer either.
Veronica Ayad no, cream paints are oil based and it will be like mixing oil and water. You can dilute cream paints with 99% alcohol for a similar effect to alcohol paints or you can drop in a bit of castor oil/skin oil to make it creamier.
i wanted to do your beginner zombie makeup for halloween so i bought cream paints because thats what you used in the video...cream paints suck they are not for beginners, its so horrid and waxy that its impossible to blend or do anything with the product other than apply it straight to your skin. i also didn't know that i had to set it and i don't have setting powder. disappointed, would much rather have gotten alcohol/water activated if i knew the difference between these products

likeastarbaby also if it 100% is cream paint you could try using coconut oil to "water" it down a bit and make it creamier, but you would definitely to set it if you did

likeastarbaby well that sucks! It's so annoying when you buy products, and feel really excited and inspired to use them and they turn out like that. I really hope this company has a good return policy.
Ingeborg Mikkelsen well because i didn't have anything else i did have to use it quite a bit on halloween, so i don't think they'll take it back now. there isn't technically a fault with the product anyway, its just that cream paints are horribly waxy and difficult to use for beginners. i did give them feedback saying that it should say more on their website about the product but got no response lol
