Hey Wizard & Mrs Wizard, congratulations to you Wizard on loosing weight, that's quite an accomplishment!!! I've battled weight issues for years so I commend you!!! 👍👍🙂
The hardest part is staying motivated.
I have as well. It will be a life long issue for me. I realized that I will have that hungry feeling for the rest of my life if I don’t want to be fat. I feel hungry 24/7 and I’m down 40lbs. If I ever try to get rid of the hunger I stop losing and start gaining 🥲
@@ohioplayer-bl9em Congratulations & good luck with your continued success!!
It's called the bidin diet plan
@@zackc.8015 I lost more weight from the lockdowns after trumps screwed up covid response. If he'd taken it seriously from the beginning we wouldn't be in this mess. He may even have won a 2nd term
I love these diagnosing walk throughs and the multiple choice game is the best, make it harder even to improve us, the fans! Thanks, I'll be hoping for more
that BMW M3 that hoovie bought was a gem....wow what a POS....wizard u are a great tech!!!
Proud of the health change Mr. Wizard! Peace and love.
Milk? Dave, your educational work is much appreciated by this old man. Your video on the Vortec V8 Suburbans, Tahoe and and the rest of the GM pack was very on the money! Thank you Bruce from Arizona!
Congratulations Car Wizard!
I'm not a fan of working on VWs, but one thing they do make super easy is replacing halfshafts. I can usually do them without even popping off the ball joint.
I have a 2006 mk5 5psd TDI. I have 395k miles on it and I still get 42-47mpg. I love it. Still all orginal except for normal stuff including the bearings. I just replaced the altternator. I still have orginal muffler.LOL. Your car is always walking to you. All you have to do is listen to her.
I test drove a Nissan Murano about 10 years ago, and there was a mild shaking or shudder. Little did I know at the time that it was likely the CVT going bad. It’s a good thing that I ultimately passed on it and bought a Camry.
My wife has a 2001 1.6 petrol, manual here in Scotland!
Don't want to change the alternator on that car. Great video Wizard
I have one of these with the 2.0 and an automatic and I love it. The common fault with the fuel door on these is that the cable between the door and the actuator gets stuck. When I bought mine, the fuel door couldn't be closed. (At least I could fuel the vehicle!) The cable was stuck, and the actuator was roached from trying to move the stuck cable. One new cable and one new actuator later and I was back in business.
Congrats on the health work, wizard! That’s great man 😎
I had a crazy violent vibration at speed that I was feeling at my feet on my Toyota Sienna and it ended up being the plastic dust guard flapping in the wind against the frame.
The amazing shrinking Wizard! Thanks for another great video. For someone who isn’t very mechanically inclined you sure have taught me a lot through your videos.
For the shakes of ANY type, I start by checking there isn’t snow or dirt built up in the wheels. It’s free, and easy and in snow country happens surprisingly often. With the weight of snow and mud that can pack up in high offset wheels the shake can happen at any speed.
Legend has it: David Hasselhoff calls the Car Wizard 'son'.
Chuck Norris calls him papa.
Always liked the new beetle, especially yellow and a stick.
When I bought my 1994 Honda Accord with 267,000 miles, it had a vibration in the steering wheel from 60-70 MPH. I thought it was a bent rim. I took the rim off the car and brought it to a wheel repair shop, but they spun it up and told me there was nothing they could do; it was perfectly balanced. So I put the rim back on the car and my vibration was gone. It has never returned either. It was the most mysterious thing that ever happened to me.
Could have been loose lug nuts
@@TheSleepingonit yup I was gona say the same.
Solid rear beam axles do flex. I added a rear sway bar to a car I had with that and it made a huge difference.
You gave a lot of very good information. I hope the viewers were taking notes.
Wizard: losing weight lifting weights at the Y
Mrs. Wizard: not that easy for us women
Wizard: you just have to try.
Pretty sure you're going to pay for that remark😂
It looks like whatever happened right after that was left on the cutting room floor.
He was right though. :)
He’s not wrong.
I couldn't believe those words actually came out of his mouth 🤣🤣🤣
@@andrewthomason3857 She showed up with that giant wrench again!
Please do more vids on mysterious vibrations !
I had a CV joint go bad in a Kia Sportage, and in that case at first I could only feel vibration when accelerating or going up hill and mainly around 45 mph (later it would happen more often and at any speed above 40). It was hard to locate where the vibration was coming from, but I did notice it would disappear when I took my foot off the gas, and shifting gears didn't change it (other than disappearing during the shift) so I knew it wasn't the engine misfiring, even though it almost felt like that. It happened at about 95K miles, and the powertrain warranty actually covered it, so no cost to me for the replacement.
Back before 2000 I had a CV boot on a '96 gran prix I had burst open on a 100 degree day. It was a former enterprise rental I bought used with 28k. I eventually sold it at 105k miles
I just got my 2nd (totaled first one months ago) 2001 VW Jetta 2.8L VR6 Engine and this one is a GLX deluxe model. Its very zippy and has only 81k miles with a 4- Speed Automatic Transmission. I love the handling and comfortable seats.
A No muffle version of this car would be good for no Mufler Newton
Cat thefts are rampant up here in Winnipeg as well...love your show!
I love my two door `03 VW Golf 2L auto. 170k on the clock and still going strong.
Note: I would have preferred the Beetle (better headroom) but impractical when compared with the Golf.
Is this the ancient 2L 8 valve engine with 115HP? My wife owns a 2013 Jetta with this engine and it still runs perfectly with 230k miles on the clock. This little engine seems to be too stupid and low tech to fail.
@@heiner71 naturally aspirated, no turbos. Classic VW quality. Won’t die.
Each Beetle has me long for the one I had. Someday I'll have another.
Thumbs up for the weight loss! I'll cheer for anyone working to improve their health. I was a member of the Y and loved it.
Those bits on the tyres I usually call them the hairy bits 😂 .
I have one that colour 💛💛
A 2003 1.9 PD100 tdi
It’s only done 111k miles, all the electricals are working, the aircon is freezing. Only yesterday 7/9/22 I had a new cambelt and water pump fit, as well as a new serpentine belt (by a mechanic I know)
I’ve done oil change and filter, air filter and fuel filter myself, also cleaned out the egr and inlet manifold too.
Also yesterday it passed its MOT with only the track rods that needed replacing.
It does 35-40 mpg urban, and 60 plus on the motorway.
I absolutely love it, and yes it also has a happy sunshine face.
Edit… When I first bought it (29/5/22) a good friend did a full fault check with VAGcom thing, and there was no faults brought up. I bought it for £700. I landed a good car.
I waited years for a yellow one to come up for sale, it had to be the tdi as I’m a diesel head.
Thank you car wizard. I had a shake that started happening that felt at the feet and was really only happening under acceleration. I went outside and looked and of course my cv joint boot is torn.
Funny thing is my aunt bought the same shade of yellow "new" Bug around 2008-2009 when fuel prices went thru the roof and her old commuter car was wore the hell out. Hers was a diesel/5 speed, 8-9 years old with almost 200k on the odometer, but it was a family friend who sold it to her, always driven on the highway, impeccably maintained. 45mpg, 50 mile round trip commute, it just made a ton of sense at that time, and for 4 or 5 years after. That car rolled the odometer from 190k to 290k with absolutely no fuss other than a clutch job, struts all around along with some control arms soon after she bought it. We have mechanics in the family so those repairs were not too expensive.
My cousin(her grandson) still has this yellow Beetle with over 300k on it, its reliable and he commutes with it cause 45mpg vs 15mpg in his truck saves a bunch of $$$$
Every town needs a Wizard that is thorough and fair. I can not even get my tires rebalanced and rotated without my interior panels getting greasy and rims being scratched. If I do not do it myself, I expect sub par work in my town.
Great tutorial ! I’m happy 😊 about your health work! My transmission guy left in early 50’s because of health issues. You can get a new vehicle but not another life! 👏🏾👏🏾💪🏾💪🏾😊
Damn, 1000 bucks, even for that seems to be pretty pricey, a CV joint online for that car is like 50-80 bucks, and the fuel door switch is less than 100.
To your daughter: you want a beetle? go out and buy one! Kids these days just get everything given to them and they don't work for it.
But I appreciate this video. it was helpful :)
You have the skill to make a replica of the Rsi Beetle. That car was awesome on Gran Turismo.
Another fantastic video car wizard and it was great to see magic Mike using the Golden rule when it comes to anything mechanical go from the most simplest thing to the more complicated thing and generally it's the more simpler things that are causing a problem it was great to see him using that rule keep up the good work
The wiz is the only honest mechanic. Guy. Very valuable information.👍🤬😎❤️❤️❤️
The Fat Car Wizards has the coolest walk on RUclips! I'd love to see a continuous loop video of him just waddling around on his stubby little legs with Pantera's WALK as the background music!
Every car I've ever had has shook really bad at some point but every time it was tires.
I had the switch problem and fixed it with contact cleaner!
1999 Beetle that looks new, with rarely a dent and is obviously serviced religiously. This is how you take care of your vehicle. Exceptionally presentable for a 23 year old car. And good thing the CW made this video because I've had cars which had the shakes at the highway. Educational video from the Wiz.
AWESOME, Your the kind of mechanic you never see. Honest, Great Job 👍
Great video wizard..
My beetle fuel door latch was already broken when I bought it however when my rear hatch pop switch went bad a couple years ago I popped up the two switch pod and disconnected the fuel door plug and used that for my rear hatch button
She's got 532k miles...TDI
Whoa. Shots fired at the beginning of the video 😳
Stopped by your shop today and bought a t-shirt during my cross country trip!
Imbalanced tires were my issue, I changed the cv axle, control arm bushings, tie rods, and ball joints tryna figure out our beetle..
Wow 😏
I bought my daughter a Beetle convertible of that generation. It was an absolute nightmare in my experience and all of this happened in the first 17,000 miles: The top hydraulics failed, the rear glass window separated from the canvas top. The microswitch that lowered the window when the door is open failed on both doors and is hard to replace. The rubberized dash turned to black goo. The speedometer failed. Both rear window regulators failed and are big bucks. Interior door skins were brittle and cracked causing the pull handles to break off. Several door window/lock switches same apart when using them too. Interior panels on sides of rear seat brittle and cracked themselves loose. The trunk would have to be slammed HARD to close and not able to fix it either. That car was a POS for sure, but I see lots of people love them and have good luck so this must have been a major lemon. It was actually embarrassed for VW because people I know were all horrified at the build quality when they saw it disintegrate in front of them. The only thing that worked on it was the powertrain so it's not all bad, lol.
That's what's kept me from purchasing one. I've heard they're nightmares
VW are junk
good advice on the lifting have seen a lot of cars with damage do to improper lifting
You can also hear bad CV shafts when turning tightly under power horrible noise. Congrats on the weight loss it can be hard to stay healthy into days world. Great video as always I wish we had garages as good and honest as yours in the UK
I have traveled all over this planet.... Met 1000s humans.... 100s of "Mechanic's"...... I've found 2 master mechanics........ You are 1... Outstanding.....Sir..
In Europe you also got a 1.4 and 1.6 engined New Beetle as well as a 2.3 V5.
Fuel door is a common problem on them. Often it's the release cable is seized if its not the switch. Another way to check the switch is swap the connector to the boot switch as the connectors are actually the same.
Also don't jack them up even on the pinch weld, they aren't very strong, use the subframe mount.
Very good video Wizard , I’ve messed with cars my whole life, your diagnosis for each item, rotors, wheel balance, motor mounts and then the half shafts is very good information
I've been to all kinds of mechanic shops all over London, UK, none are half as good as you guys Omega
Very informative. Thanks Wizard. Keep up the great work.
Nice ride. Very Nice one. I just drop My vw polo 1.9sd for the same problem it's important yo check regulary the ruber protection on the drive shaft. The grease just fly instantly when the ruber is broken. This!
Did VW ever fix their issue with the electrical wiring deteriorating?
You should do a live stream diagnostic! We can all vote real time.
Thank Wizard and Mrs. Wizard on the video. I'm encountering a similar problem with my 2005 Mitsubishi Montero.
Looking good Wizard! I noticed you lost weight before you said it.
Speaking of wheel bearings, I had a 1990 Ford Escort that would eat front wheel bearings every 30,000 miles but it was due to the structure that connected to the lower control arms being slightly bent inward and creating a little positive camber to the front wheels that was uncorrectable. At least no shop would fix it because the frame was essentially bent but I used a ratcheting come along to pull it apart as needed and finally was able to keep wheelbearings under it for much longer as well as better tire wear. Lol
My 1991 GT Escort that I just recently scrapped due to severe rust never had a single wheel bearing replaced and had approximately 522,000 miles on it when scrapped. I even saved the wheel ends, knuckles, brakes, suspension etc for my other 1991 Escort LX project I’ve slowly been working on over the past 5 years on the lift!
It’s getting the full GT swap, suspension, engine, trans etc and all components were already in good serviceable shape but are freshened up to live another life in a rust free body shell. Keeping LX badges on this car and keeping off the GT wings and bumpers for a simple look.
My LT1 Corvette has the dual-sided ribbed drive belt. Thing is way more expensive than the Vettes that got the normal belt. You should get your daughter and old school Beetle. I just bought me a 74 Super Beetle and that thing is freaking sweet. So simple, so analog, so awesome. Everyone compliments me on it.
Love these vw beetles, especially the blue colour they can come in
ALWAYS check if you have mud in your wheels. We had a jeep renegade at work that would shake the ENTIRE car above 45mph. Shovels and everything would rattle like crazy. But you could DEFINITELY feel it in the steering wheel. Checked it and sure enough, front left tire just had a bunch of mud on it.
I had this on my Audi Q3 about a year ago on the inner joint, it took 3 garages 6 months to diagnose. The vibrations originally started at 70mph and gradually moved down the speedo until by the time it had been identified and booked to be fixed I could barely go 30mph.
I’ve noticed you’ve been dropping the “el bees” wizard. I have a very similar build as you and the ketogenic diet has been a game changer! Either way you’re looking good man good job!
I've had a broken wheel bearing on my Peugeot 107. After that was replaced the mechanic didn't mount the CV shaft correctly resulted in a lots of vibrations in the steering and floor just felt the same as with the Beatle, the CV shaft wasn't bad but it the mechanic did had to mount the CV shaft correctly and it's all good to go.
Thanks Wizard for this video, it helped to diagnose a problem with my toyota
I can feel the love Mrs. Wizard has for Beetles
My volvo c70 mk1 has vibrations via brake pedal between 35mph to 44mph started intermittently and has been getting worse has new pads and discs track rod end and drop links well after a 500mile plus trip it turns out wheel bearing (on drivers side in Im from UK) has failing its seems that depending when you press brakes if you manage to get correct spot on the bearing race its moving. After the big trip the play has got worse as now can move wheel backwards and forwards around. Nice video as always car wizard
Sarah - Tuned on RUclips has been restoring a 1969 white Beetle. Like you, she started in the Service. She is putting an all-new wiring harness in it.
I have a 2003 turbo Beetle and I love the car but it’s at the point now where there are so many electrical failures I’m always afraid to take it to the shop because every time I do, it’s never just for an oil change. It’s practically guaranteed that I’ll be chucking hundreds of bucks into it. The engine and the transmission haven’t had any issues but wires are constantly failing now and causing problems. But I can’t bring myself to sell it because I’ve had it 7 years and it’s my first car.
I had a 06 convertible new beetle with the 2.5 that isold 2 years ago and I miss it . The interior painted plastic will break really easily so dont lean on them . Ill suggest getting interior metal door handles .
There's another obscure source of vibration and messed up alignment out there. IF your car has staggered wheels, espec where only the width is staggered, sometimes shops will rotate tires in an X pattern and put different width wheels on each side. This happened to me. It was exacerbated by a previous owner putting 245 ratio tires on all 4 wheels despite them being different widths (18x8s and 18x9s) so at a glance you don't realize they are different. Then on top of that he'd had the car aligned so it tracked straight. With 8s on one side and 9s on the other. So alignment was miles out. Didn't work that out till I was setting tire pressures and noticed the pressure chart had different wheels front and back. Then pulled wheels and read the sizes off the back and worked it out. One wheel swap and an alignment later and it finally tracked straight with minimal vibration. Final step will be new tires with correct geometry. I hope to eliminate all remaining vibration with that.
That shouldn't be a problem at a competent shop though it does happen occasionally, especially if it's a staggered setup on a fwd car.
@@ashravenpb the fact it has 4 identical tires on it that make it look apparently a square setup was a real good disguise. It wasn't till I Iooked at the tire pressures chart and noticed it was SUPPOSED to have 245/45r18s in front and 255/45r18s in rear that I figured it out. It had 245s all round. It actually still does, but I'll be sorting that later once I'm back in the US. The nextdoor neighbours kid needs some new 245s on the front of his Ford so I've said he can have mine once I pull them and replace them with 255s. He's broke as shit and his tires need replacing but he's a good kid.
Only shop I held this against was the "Jaguar specialist" the previous owner took it to cos they should know.
Everyone else I gave a pass. My alignment guy who is also a great mechanic but not a jag specialist laughed out loud when I figured it out and did the re-alignment/correction for free. You leave wheels on for alignment.
Moral of the story is with used cars, check everything against manufacturer specs, pull the wheels and actually read the sizes off the rims. Don't trust the tires. Cos someone might have put the wrong ones on. And then another shop dutifully rotated them as if they were square. When you say staggered wheels, everyone assumes different radius only. Nope, sometimes they are just different widths. And you won't know unless you look it up.
I always wanted a Beetle. I always loved them.
keep up the hard work on the health! looking good!
Yes Car Wizard I also think Beatles are freaking awesome, but I've never owned one, because it didn't suit my situation and work, great video 👍🏼👍🏼🇦🇺🇦🇺🦘🦘Cheers from Melbourne Australia
I think you're becoming the Bob Ross of mechanics... Thats a good thing..
I'm gonna guess C! I feel like A makes more of a vibration that is noticeable at speed, less on turns, B is ... I don't know, and D would shake when you brake. Well you do brake when turning... So maybe D. But I'm sticking with C because my gut said so! ;)
Alot of cars, say to lift on the pinch welds.
On my subaru outback there are little sections that there is marks on em where to lift it.
I never did think was something that made sense
So i usually jack up from one of the main center lift points instead.
My Crown Vic has a sway bar in the rear with a solid axle
Another great video from the wizard. Thanks
Glad to see you happy about going down a size. Who doesn't love the Y M C A
CV shaft? Something new I just picked up! Thanks Mr wizard
"I've serviced this beetle for this customer for many years.... she bought it not long ago....." huh?!?!
haha wish I had seen this video earlier...went thru the same things with my wifes beetle. Thankfully the only wasted work was on a wheel balance and it was free, but ball joints and tie rod ball joints were shot so got a lot of maintenance done that was necessary before I finally pulled the trigger on cv shafts. I didn't have any visible damage or splits tho so it was kinda a shot in the dark...
As so.eone who os chasing a death wobble in a jeep commander I hear what your saying wizard. Everytime i replaced a part its gotten better bit still not completely gone.
brake rotors can be felt in the brake pedal pre abs
Congrats on getting in tip top shape.
I guessed correctly! My mechanic told me the same thing about the origins of vibrations.
Love your videos, please do a video on aftermarket car warranties. Should I buy one?
I was always taught check easy stuff first. Anything you don’t need to remove bolts is easier than ripping it apart
Looking very trim sir, well done.
Question: Did you recommend to the customer she replace the CV shaft on the driver's side of the car as well?
If the boots are not torn no need to
Personally, I would, especially with high miles. It's going to rip in the near future anyways.
I have that same plate on the front of my truck!
There are circumstances when you have warped rotors or a single rotor that you'll feel it in the brake pedal & not in the steering wheel . I have had this happen more then once where the lower ball joint was so bad that when the brakes were applied the steering wheel would shimmy so it's not true that when the brakes are applied and the steering wheel vibrates it's automatically the rotors . Another thing it's not true that when the front wheels are out of balance you'll only feel it in the steering wheel , you'll also feel it in the body (floorboard) or in the seat .
Love the videos!!
Run away Wizard and run fast! I could write a book on the issues with the first generation of the "New Beetle".
Could be a combination of wheel balance and or brake rotors out of round.
