“She was not coming in as the first lady who was going to stay home and bake cookies and make tea,” says Sally Quinn, the longtime Washington Post columnist, “She was going to make policy and that was very clear. And so there were an awful lot of people who were out of sorts about this.”
The clash between the first lady and the Washington establishment would leave an indelible impression on Hillary Clinton as she came to learn just how brutal politics in the nation’s capital could be.

That may explain some of the criticism, but labeling any disagreement with Clinton’s policies as it’s because of her gender is just as obscured.
I love how Democrats were/are cool with the fact that Bill had his wife running some stuff, yet when Trump has his daughter and son in law running stuff it's a problem. Either you're good with Presidents appointing their non-elected family members to office or you're not cool with it. Personally I don't like it at all whether it's JFk, Clinton, or Trump.

I was in high school when Clinton was president. I didn't like Bill Clinton at the time. Thing is I just never regarded Hillary as all that bad. I was never hung up on gender roles roles or societal expectations. At the time I think I felt like "If she wants to do more than tell high schools to serve more vegetables that's fine".

You can see the liberal bias of PBS throughout this video. Narrator says "she would learn what Washington expected of its first lady" like she had to bow to the dark forces. Hillary held secret meetings (illegally) on healthcare and PBS says "the secrecy gave her critics an opening to attack" and "soon, the criticism turned personal". No such comments when she lashed back. A guy saying "Hillary was the first of her generation, the first of her gender to make it to this point in American politics".... but how sad she was held back by Washington. Maybe if she had not tried to conceal her plans and had done a good job, everybody would have applauded her.
How were these meetings illegal? Under which statute?
