Burton Cummings (the Guess Who) had one of the best rock voices, but weirdly contrasting, on stage looked like he was part of Vegas lounge act. Love these posts of the Midnight Special!
Mr. Cummings was and is an awesomely talented person. There's not much he can't do on stage and writing wise. Love the Guess Who and their many many hits. Great show tonight!!!
Wishbone Ash hovered between Led Zep & Yes, without any really great songs, but excellent musicianship. Here in the UK they sold well but weren't a singles band, tho sold out theatres.
I love you Midnight Special. I secretly stayed up to watch when I was 8 or 9 years old. Wishbone Ash, what a sweet surprise! Coincidentally, I read an article about Blowin Free by Wishbone Ash just this week. Great information about the girl who inspired the song, the Steve Miller riff that inspired the music, and the Steely Dan and Thin Lizzy song riffs that subsequently were inspired by Blowin Free.

@@KittyGrizGriz I’ll quote the article: “the seeds of the song…had been sown by bassist/vocalist Martin Turner’s memories of a teenage summer romance in his home town of Torquay. Turner had briefly become entwined with Swedish exchange student Annalena Nordstrom, whose hair was ‘golden brown… Neither spoke the other’s language, and when Turner asked whether he could give her a kiss, she told him falteringly: “You can try.” Although the romance fizzled out after Nordstrom returned home, the experience ignited what Turner calls “a glorious anthem to the spirit of love”. “ ☺️❤️
@@daisywrabbit Oh my, I got chills reading this it’s sooo lovely! Summer romance and then they had to depart to their respective homes, countries. He and I shared “stares” for weeks (I’ll never forget his gorgeous chocolate brown eyes with long dark eyelashes), when finally, he approached me 3 days before I had to return home 1,200 miles away. The Guess Who, doing all my favorite songs from my youth. Sha Na Na doing 3 great songs. One of my favorite being, Tell Laura i Love Her. I knew a Laura in 1973. Wonder if she is still alive, where she is and what she's up to.
I knew a Laura too, from elementary school she was a very sweet girl in my Blue Bird & Camp Fire Girls group. I’d be a lil smarty pants and tell any girls in the rival Brownies group “the blues birds EAT the brownies!” Haha! That sounds SO crazy & silly now!

Saw Leo Kottke many times in the 80s, 90s all over the U.S. He is so young here!! Really nice and humble guy, always made time to talk w/ us, I got his autograph several times.
The Rock & Roll Hall of Fame should go back & watch all of these old Midnight Special episodes. So many of the Rock bands & acts who were ok it belong in the RHOF now.
Firing up the Way Back Machine XL for this episode! I can't wait to see Wishbone Ash, my friends and I used to think we "Discovered" them because they were so good, but we never heard them on 97 KMOD the Rock Station. The Guess Who bringing the hits that made for the soundtrack of the 70s. Slade is always hot, I knew David Essex for Rock On but the Midnight Special has turned me on a lot of his good songs. Sha Na Na is always a hoot, no wonder they had their own show later. Loe Kottke was a Suprise the 1st time I saw him here, he's always entertaining. I recently read a great Burton Cummings interview. Among the things they talked about was due to poor management The Guess Who was bilked out of millions. That's why they toured an astounding 80% of the time. It's the R& R HOF's loss they haven't been inducted.
This was like watching a bunch of high school talent show contestants play with true talented professional, Burton Cummings. That guy was next level talent-from God. All his songs here are jaw dropping as usual.
In 1987 Burton Cummings played a solo show at a club I worked at in Chicago. Was such a nice guy, and was in great voice. Before he sang “These Eyes”, he told the crowd that he was a lot older than when the song was first recorded, and he wasn’t sure if he could hit all the notes. But he did, and it was exquisite.
It's kind of ironic that The Guess Who are on the midnight special since they have a song called "Clap for the Wolfman" off their 1974 release "Road Food" which featured "Wolfman Jack's" sound bites on the track.
Burton Cummings should be in everyone’s top 10 rock vocalists of all time. That lead guitarist does a great job in the Randy Bachman role. Also, that American Woman riff sounds very Zeppelin-ish. Jimmy Page was a huge fan of the Guess Who. The riff as it’s played here is hypnotic - reminds me of Four Sticks
