Beautiful country. Cold weather I just need a little brandy. In india you can't eat vegan in restaurants. All north india has dairy in everything. South India it's easy to eat vegan. I live in kolkata and 99% people are meat eaters and use dairy. It's tough to live as a vegan in North india. but I love animals vegan till I die.

Vegan selection here is amazing, I think it's probably the best after the UK. And yes, I've lived in Germany! 😛 Sanctuaries are ❤ And people mind their own business which is perfect. If it wasn't such a long cold DARK winter, I'd love to live here for good. One huge tip for surviving in the nordics: double or triple your vitamin D intake in the winter 🙏🙏

Canadian vegan here who just had -45 a few weeks ago and 0 degrees today. Dealing with the cold is all about layering appropriately. It's not bad at all once you're used to it. No need for down coats or leather. Long underwear, clothes, thick socks, sweaters, then good outer wear like ski/snowboard jackets and pants.
The northern ingenious arguments always come off as soft bigotry of low expectations. I have worked in the high arctic and people are importing most food and supplementing their diet with hunting. They go on hunts using rifles, snow machines, and modern clothing. If they can import bullets, they can import beans. Saying people in the north can't go vegan is just infantalizing a whole population.

Yes, -45 sucks. We Canuck vegans can take anything nature throws at us but unfortunately there are still waaay too many carnies in my part of Canada and we don’t have as many vegan restaurants & food choices in grocery stores as Finland does.

    • @JayGreggy4973

That's very true. I've seen that many things get imported to those areas now, such as many fruits and nuts that would never otherwise have been introduced and are appreciated by the indigenous peoples of those areas nowadays as a welcome addition to their diets and obviously very nutritious, even though for thousands of years, had never been consumed. So, yeah, why not beans, as well?

As i see it there is no difference whether you are in a cold climate or warm one, that only matters to tribal communities. Where as us - we can buy everything all year round at a shop. Here in Latvia it's winter as well, it's freezing, but when it comes to vegan food, the situation is no different than it is in summer. But even if it was an issue, it is so easy to stock up on legumes, vegetables, fruits, greens...etc and preserve them through various means until the next season even, especially dry preserving or frozen, can have a million bags of beans, peas, lentils and they will never spoil.
We live in a time with an immense accessibility to all kinds of food, there are no arguments to be had against eating vegan due to that.

Question about the reindeer antlers. Are there groups in Finland that collect shed antlers? I ask because where I live in Wisconsin, there’s an active shed antler group, that collect the antlers that deer shed naturally every year. The products (usually decor) that use shed antlers are clearly marked as shed antlers.
I mean it’s a murky world of being acceptable or not, but it would be more humane. But then there’s also the issue that white-tail deer here in North America aren’t domesticated like reindeer are.

I'll send this now before watching so I dont forget: Going out IF there is sunshine in the day is very effective keeping the mood up. Because of the snow we receive quite some sunshine even if the sun shines only approx. 20 mins a day. For surviving freezing temperatures I guess spruce is helpful perhaps pine too. I mean eating branches and needles of pine and spruce and possibly bark can help.
Spruce needles have stuff that keeps water inside of them from freezing.
If you do eat these be aware that you might be even in life danger if you go to sauna as your body might work keeping that heat inside your body.

The best sauna/lake experience I've had in Finland, apart from being Lapland. This video brings me loads of memories of Finland. Blood sausage is the most vile-looking, vile-tasting thing I've experienced. I did not put that thing in my mouth, mainly because, as an African man it reminded me of my own black sausage :-) No way, and I was not even vegan then.
Great video and insights David. Married an Estonian eventually, and their vegan options (foodwise) there are insane and a great variety. Similar to Finland, the culture is a (pig) meat-heavy and centered around the exploitation of animals. Even with the small population.

I'm a Finnish millennial, very sympathetic to the vegan cause and food. I haven't been able to jump on board 100% yet but I do support the vegan food industry by buying the products they make whenever I can. My only meat consumption is chicken (the one I'll attempt to stop first), fish or deer that's hunted by my family. Hunting deer is actually the most "ethical" form of meat, because it's done to reduce their numbers, otherwise their population will blow up and cars will crash onto them more and more and their predators will increase and are just going to maul them to death even more horribly.
My family doesn't like the Sami people very much, mainly because of their hypocrisy regarding their lifestyle, racism between the Sami tribes and their cries about cultural appropriation. I believe it's not okay to give special rights or permissions to any people, but I digress. When I finally get my own plot of land, I can finally make the jump closer to 100% by growing my own vegan food. It's a journey, it will take some time but I'll make it some day.
As it is with every country, old folks will never change their eating habits. It's the younger ones who change with the times, so veganism will be on a rise for quite a while until it's substantial.

While I don't agree with any of your vegan views, it's good that you are able to live that lifestyle if you wish to do so.
The best way to get more people to adopt even just part of it, is to make better vegan products. For example, I put "kaurajuoma" in my coffee these days instead of milk, because it tastes better.
I don't have the strong feelings about animals in the same way that you do, so I'm not opposed to eating meat at all. The best way to get me to eat something else is to offer a better alternative.
