Awesome sir the very first lesson for me. I have no teacher to learn so approached this online tutorials. This is for the very first time I took a violin and I did it for the very first time soon after this video. Salutation for your teaching. Thankyou sir🙏⚘⚘...
First of all, great video...Subscribed ;) And tell us more about ... 1.The limit to stop tuning. Coz many beginners face the issue where the strings gets broken. 2. Are all violins the same? [Can them all be tuned to the standards(Western{G, D, A, E} or classical of any shruthi] 3. What is the best place to place the bridge, while I got my violin it was not even placed. 4. How to use Rosin on bow, what's the best way to apply? 5. Whats the correct tension of bow we need to get the correct sound. A detailed explanation on that should be very helpful too. 6. How high should the strings be on the violin[ As it can vary on position of bridge], side view explanation should be helpful. A comment to each of these questions or another video explaining the questions of a beginner would help a lot of people.
this video was really really helpful... loved this video... actually Mera violin ka D string slightly damaged h aur use baar baar tune krne k lie boht mehnat krni pdti h... but iss video SE boht Kuch clear ho gya... thankyou so much...
Thank you so much! This helped me a lot understanding about tuning the violin in Indian classical music. It's now clear to me and it is sa pa, sa pa strategy which is easier then all others! Best wishes.
And if I want a 4 string in C or C # to sound higher in pitch, is Sa-Pa tuning advisable ? Sometimes the string tension became high and it broke..can u help with this through a video?
You have to be very careful in using a tuner app. Most tuner apps, if not all, are for Western music and to use it for Indian music, you need to make some settings adjustments if the particular tuner app allows you to do do so. While its OK to use the tuner app without adjustment for tuning your basic SA, all the other notes will be off, some very slightly so, others more pronounced. This has got to to with the differences between Equal Temperament (Western Music) and Just Intonation (Indian) method of dividing up the notes. If you want to know more about the adjustments required, click on the channel icon and there is a presentation on it.
Thank you for your comment. The tuning of the Indian violin uses essentially 2 notes, the tonic and the perfect fifth. The perfect fifth in equal temperament is flatter than in just intonation by 2 cents, so basically it is indiscernible. The rest of the 10 semitones we play using the fingers. When I make my students practice swara sthanas (proper intonation), I make them use just intonation. Tonal Energy is one such app which allows choice of various intonations.
South Indian Carnatic Tuning :- Shruthi in G - G3(196.00 hz), D4(293.66 hz), G4(392.00 hz), D5(587.33 hz) Shruthi in E - E3 (164.81 hz), B3 (246.94 hz), E4 (329.63 hz), B4 (493.88 hz) Shruthi in D# - D#3(155.56 hz), A#3(233.08 hz), D#4(311.13 hz), A#4(466.16 hz) Please let me know if this not correct. Thanks
Thank you for correctly, showing us how to properly tune our violin to the Indian tune sound however, I am having issues with the third string, which in American is an A string, but for you it’s a E4 string. I am having issues tuning it to E4. My violin is only going to E 5 and back down to D5, but I can’t figure out the E4 tune.
That was such a excellent video! Tkk you very much! Can I know how to tune a 5 string violin for higher Shruthi without changing the gauge of the string? Is it Sa-Pa or Pa-Sa tuning?
Hello Tejas........you made voilin lessons so easy for learns n biggeners. The piece music of voilin in starting of this video is very heart touching....where can I get that full music from......plz Reply.Thankyou. keep it up Hare krishna!!
You have chosen E as the basic key for tuning (because of your preferences), but how do I need to change say, for some male singing in 'Sa'' (C3/C2*) or a female singer who prefers say, G (Pa in the C-scale). Mostly we find folks rendering their kritis/kirtanas in this pitch/frequency/key (as in Western terms :) ). Is there any specific reason for you to choose 'Ga' as the tonic note for movement? Chords-wise, it might work, but Carnatic music does not believe in chordal extrapolations (pure/pristine/and somewhat intransigent in the approach). Any details are welcome...Thanks for the wonderful video presentation! God bless you! Jai Ma Saraswati!
Thank you for your lessons, I really liked it, I have a question.. how basically are we going to play more than four swaras in single string, An advanced lesson or two would be helpful..
Hi Tejas, thanks for the explanation. I have been learning western classical 🎻 the suzuki method. I want to buy a violin so I can play both the Western Classical & Carnatic styles. Do I need to look for anything specific when I buy the violin? Thanks in advance.
Murali G Firstly, there is a lack of good books in the market. But secondly, I don't think Carnatic music can't be learnt from a book, because it is mostly learnt by ear. I would recommend finding a good teacher.
Sorry, my question was regarding buying a violin and if there are features that I should be looking for in a violin, or is there's a recommended one that I should buy so I can play carnatic music? Yes I will go to a teacher to learn. Thanks.
Murali G sorry I misunderstood. There is no physical difference between the instrument used in both systems. The tuning in the Carnatic style typically is much lower, for the reasons explained in the video. So likely would need a different set of strings.
Sunadam Thanks. So is there any specs for the strings recommended for carnatic? Or should I just ask the store person to give me strings that can be tuned lower?
Murali, For carnatic, you can use any cheap Indian instrument. There is no beauty in the way ( mainly bhakthi). They even use oil on strings to make the slides easy. Most indian violins are calcutta made and are cheaper. For western music, violin quality makes a difference. So go to your city music shop and get a less than 2500 rs violin.
That's really helpful Sir! I have an old violin, I tune them the same way but while I play the instrument with bow after sometime suddenly the string gets lose as the peg is not tightly fixed. Do I need to change the Violin? or is there any other way to solve this.
Sir , I am not able to understand, some people tune Sa, Pa, Sa, Pa as D,A,D,A and still sound as Sa, Pa, Sa, Pa. so tuning it to E4, B4, E3, B3 will still sound as Sa, Pa, Sa, Pa. I'm Confused.
This is a wonderful explanation..! Can't believe this was made 8 years ago..! This is still the best video..! Thanks Brother 🙏🏽🙏🏽
Well...broke a string and now being a lockdown can't even take the violin to my teacher :3
I know that feeling dear😂🤣
That is why i always keep an extra set .

Hi..if i have to tune my violin to G# octave what would be the low s low p and s p...?how do we detect it?
I am not sure but I think the tune is in perfect fifths. So G# is the tonic and C the Fifth so Sa and Pa should be G# and so on so forth.
can you suggest a similar tuning application for ios please!!! any idea on those!
thanx sir this video is very helpfull
