Agree with AD Wheeler that all of the teams have to prepare financially to go to the tournament. However, I believe all teams should budget to go to and stay for the full duration of its post-season play. If you don't, its additional revenue available to the program. If you go, its already budgeted for the success.
Carlos, I hear what you are saying about sending your best. But, post-season basketball is about who is playing their best in March. There are often teams who finish at the top, but are no longer playing the best basketball in the conference. That's how they get upset in the tournament a lot of times. Last year was the first year when probably the top 6 teams in men and women could beat each other any night and all 8 teams had a chance to beat each other. But, finishing 1st in the regular season in basketball does not mean they are the conference's best opportunity to go deep in the NCAA Tournament.
A. I don't like going to 12 teams. But if so, Top 2 teams should get 2 rounds of byes to play in a reseeded Final 4 on Day 3. That would make the Top 2 only have to play 2 games to win the championship, while 3-10 would have to play in 4 games including the championship.
B. If you have a play-in concept is used, you could have 9 and 10 play-in one day, which adds a day to the tournament. That leaves 9 team to give the Top Team a bye (2/9, 3/8, 4/7 & 5/6) on 1st full day and Top Team getting a 2nd bye Day 2 (2/5, 3/4). Top Seed would start play in the Semi-Finals (Final 4).
As close as our men and women's teams are today, I think option A is best because there just isn't that big a difference in 1 and 2 of our men and women's teams.
I hate everybody makes the post-season philosophy. I think we are perfect now with 8 of 12 going to post-season tournament. We have teams fighting to make the tournament (Top 8) and we have teams fighting to be Top 4. Only 2 stay home and none stay home creates no excitement at the end of the regular season.
The focus needs to be on how to get more loyal fanbases in our arenas on a consistent basis as it as through the 90s. Not focusing on everyone gets post-season rights regardless to how pathetic of a regular season they have had.
