    Thanks for watching! Feel free to ask questions about the time period covered in the episode (there's a wealth of history that we can't include in this format and we'd love to share). Also remember to check below in the pinned comment for corrections.
    [corrections]
    @ 8:30 - I should note that according to traditional accounts Langdarma actually used his bare hands to kill the sitting emperor and not a knife. Incorporating a weapon in this scene is an artistic choice that we made in the early stages of the episode's production.

      According to contemporary studies, Ralpachen was sick for long time and died because of his illness. They found prayers dedicated to king’s health in Tarim basin temples.
      Also lang drama actually only suppressed monasteries in Tibetan capital Lhasa only to reduce the influence of Buddhist ministers and build a stronger country. There are accounts of Buddhist lama from Time going to eaten Tibet to realise that they haven’t faced a single suppression of religion by king.
      Finally king lang darma is said to have petitioned by ministers to read the great deeds of his fore fathers written on stone Tablet in front of potala. That’s when former monk minister, who lost all his power killed the king pretending to bow to him. Last words of king was “it’s either three years too late or three years too early” showing his deeds in past three years would be meaningless if he cannot capitalise on it to make country stronger in next three years.

    It's amazing how hard the center cut of Eurasia, from Western Europe and Northern Africa all the way over to China and Japan, moves in a surprisingly consistent, hemisphere wide cycle. All the countries in the beginning are moving from chaos to order: the Tibetan Empire has just reformed following civil unrest, T'ang China has just put down the An Lusan rebellion, the Uygur Khagante has just formed from formerly warring nomadic tribes, and the Abbasids in expansion. This is happening at the same time as the Carolingian Renaissance in Western Europe, the heptarchy in England is starting to move towards consolidation, and if memory serves me correctly this is also about when the first Russian state begins to form as well, centered on Kiev. I might be off on some those but the consistency is pretty cool to think about across a map

    Please shed light on the Tibetan origin of Burmese/Myanmar civilization with the Pyu City-States founded by Tibetan nomads from Qinghai (Amdo). From Mongolia to Kashmir to Myanmar, Tibetan influence was vast.

    • @sonam1959_

      It is unlikely for Tibetan influence to have been extensive in Myanmar. Tibet and Myanmar followed distinct trajectories with limited direct political interactions or alliances. Also trade routes traditionally connected Tibet more with India, Mongolia, Central Asia, and later China whereas Myanmar's was more aligned with East Asia, Southeast Asia, and India.

Contrary to what you mentioned, Tibet has always had profound ties to Nepal and Northern India, along with what is now modern day northern Pakistan, Mongolia, and China. Now if you are talking about the peripheries of the Tibetan region, I’m sure there have been instances of contact between the lowland tribal populations from the lesser Himalayan hill tract regions such as in northern Arunachal etc. Also, absolutely not true, Tibet has had relations with India prior to the 1950s, you couldn’t be more off, funny joke.

    Despite living in harsh environments, Tibetans managed to establish powerful empires and expand their territories successfully. A key factor contributing to this was the high birth rate among Tibetan mothers, often having more than ten children. This ensured a sizable population capable of defending and expanding their territory. However, internal power struggles and conflicts with neighboring regions posed significant challenges for Tibetan rulers.
    The introduction of Buddhism played a crucial role as it was adapted to suit their ambitions of controlling both nearby and distant Tibetan regions through religious influence. As a consequence, thousands of Buddhist temples were constructed across the Tibetan plateau, housing hundreds to thousands of monks each.
    Despite these developments, there were negative repercussions. The focus on Buddhism led to a decline in population growth, weakened social structures, and hindered economic development. This vulnerability became evident when neighboring powers invaded, finding no manpower to defend Tibetan territories. Despite devotion, Buddha never revealed itself to offer help but left the tragedy. Most Tibetan don’t understand its history they think Buddhism is everything to them but even the dalai lama’s this title was given by the Chinese emperor whom dead and nobody worshiped as him as God.

      Buddhism teaches that the Buddha is not someone who will always rescue or save people. That's why his apparent inaction doesn't bother them. Acheiving monksha, liberation from the cycle of rebirth is what practicing Buddhists aim for.

      Buddha is not a god, and no god has ever or will ever save any kingdom from its fall. Zeus didn't save Greece, Jupiter didn't save the Romans, and Allah didn't save the Ottomans from their decline. The fall of an empire is in the hands of its people. You should blame the Tibetans for being overly religious, not Buddhism itself.

This is more like beginning of how the Tibetan empire fell and then - Enter the Mongols to save TIbet - who drove the tartars all the way to Constantinople turning into present day Istanbul. The Uyghur Khaganate was northwest of Tibet and not directly North. It is Mongolia which is directly north from Tibet especially Songzen Gampo's time the borders were shared with Mongolian Tartars.

    are the documents and other sources that date from the period of Mongol rule in Tibet still written in Classical Tibetan or Mongol?

    • @ArmchairAcademics
      @ArmchairAcademics  Месяц назад +2

      Hey there! That's a really good question. The court of the Yuan dynasty was extremely linguistically diverse and there's a huge difference between the spoken and written languages of the Yuan court.
      To keep things brief, the spoken languages would have been an eclectic mix of Mongolian, Old Uyghur and other Turkic languages, Classical Tibetan, and Old Mandarin (or Middle Mongolian Chinese), as well as a variety of other Chinese languages. As such, translators were always in high demand and are sometimes even referenced by name in surviving primary sources.
      The written language, though, was much more standardized. For the majority of the Yuan period, the court kept multi-lingual records using the so-called "Phagpa script" (written 'phgas-pa in Tibetan), which was adapted from Classical Tibetan by Drogon Chogyal Phagpa for Khublai Khan. The Phagpa script was used to phoneticize the spoken languages of the court into a single centralized administrative language that was comprehensible to Kublai Khan's advisors and lieutenants. This was no small feat and is a genuinely incredible linguistic accomplishment that often goes unacknowledged by modern historians.
      In both the spoken and written languages, though, towards the end of the Yuan period there was a marked trend towards 'Sinicization'... In other words, the court began to favor Old Mandarin and other Chinese languages.
      Thanks for posting!

Why act like there existed no way for tibet to transition out of serfdom, like many countries have done, over the course of history?
      If someone applies this false equivalence to colonial rule by europeans over african nations they'd say: 'the african nations had a unacceptable social structure so we are justified to colonize your country and take away your soveriegnty forever.' Before Buddhism was established, we had Bhoenpo religion, which was very violent, involving flesh and blood offering and shamanism, etc. If Buddhism hadn't been established in Tibet, Tibet would still stand strong against its neighbors.same goes to Mongolia. So, my point is that China has nothing to prove with their military capabilites. They waited and took advantage over defenseless Tibet. What was the religion that the rebellious factions preferred to Buddhism?

    • @ArmchairAcademics
      @ArmchairAcademics  Месяц назад

      Hey there! That's a great question. Thanks for posting... Later Tibetan chroniclers make the case (which tends to be supported by modern Western historians) that Langdarma's clan allies advocated the Bon religion over Buddhism, which may well be true. As it is used today, however, that argument is deceptively simple and creates a false equivalency between the contemporary Bon religion (e.g. Yungdrung Bon) and the Bon ritual traditions of the imperial period. The former emerged during the Renaissance in the 10th and 11th centuries as a clerical movement with its monastic seat in Central Tibet, which created a synthesis of indigenous imperial-era beliefs and Renaissance-era philosophical innovations. Regarding the later, we actually know very little about imperial-era Bon, aside from the fact that there were numerous funerary specialists that referred to themselves as 'Bon gShen'. The historical record strongly suggests that there was no centralized monastic tradition that described itself or could be described as 'Bon' during the Tibetan Empire. As such, it's more accurate to say that Langdarma's clannish allies favored what you might call the eclectic, pre-Buddhist indigenous religious traditions of Tibet (which, again, should not be confused with the Yungdrung Bon religion of today) and probably saw the emergence of Buddhism as a foreign religious export that was eroding what they believed to be the ancient traditions of the countryside.
      Hope that helps! My response is a bit of a simplification and the question of Imperial-era Bon is actually a highly political one that strikes a nerve with some Buddhist (and Bon) practitioners. If you're interested in learning more, however, I highly recommend Samten Karmay's "The Arrow and the Spindle" (ch. 8-9), as well as Per Kvaerne's work on Bon. You could also check out my own book on Bon ritual and history, titled "Divination in Exile" (2020), which has a handy chapter on Bon history and historiography... Although my book was so obscenely over-priced by the publisher that I would recommend you sail the high seas to find a 'more affordable' digital copy (though I would never officially condone such a thing, of course!).
      Have a good one!

      @@ArmchairAcademics Thank you for your prompt reply. I had recently watched a different video about Manicheism which had spread along the Silk Road, and thought maybe that was in the area as well. Always trying to find connections between things. • @ArmchairAcademics
      @ArmchairAcademics  Месяц назад +1

      ^^ Regarding Manicheism specifically, many of the historians that have worked on Yungdrung Bon have noted that the it's cosmology and early mythology share themes with Manicheism, Zoroastrianism, and Nestorian Christianity (Charles Ramble, for example, makes that argument in much of his work on Bon, as does Samten Karmay, who is actually a former Bon monk himself). As such, it is likely that Manicheism was actually present (in some limited capacity) in Western Tibet during the pre-Buddhist period. This is most likely due to trade with Persia and other Western regions along the Silk Roads, as you noted above. The Tibetan-language records from that time, though, are so sparse (and the later Buddhist conversion was so systemic) that it's impossible to say how extensive that influence might have been. Thanks again for the great question!

      But that’s not a fact. The Licchavis king and his family were given shelter by Tibetan Emperor Songtsen Gampo for 10 years in the capital city of Lhasa, Tibet. In fact it was Gampo who helped him return to Kathmandu valley to regain his kingdom by sending thousands of troops.
      There are still descendants of those troops now using varying surnames like Gurung, Tamang, and since in the past few centuries, Buddhists were persecuted by the Hindus there, now these descendants of the Tibetan troops practice a mix of Hinduism and Buddhism but identify themselves as Hindu. Therefore, 87% of Nepal’s population is Hindu and in fact, just a few years ago, the country was calling itself the only Hindu kingdom.

      Mongolians killed millions of Tibetans for a whole century. Tibetans identity was erased by labelling Tibetans as ‘Tamang, Gurung, Yi, Rai, Bai, Bhutia, Bhutanese, Naga, etc and the whole of NE India’. When you count all Tibetans, not just what China labels zangzu, Tibetan population exceeds 100 million.

      You know how when Olympics start, many athletes go to high altitude to train? It’s the same concept, once you get used to highland, the sudden influx of oxygen in the lowlands gives you a ‘high’ that lets you perform better. Reverse is true as defender, low land people struggle with low oxygen in highlands where the Tibetan empire base is. Also the empire high days were when the tibetans were still very much ‘nomadic’ in practices thus have higher population percentage of fighting capable men compared to sedentary population.

      And when Buddha was born there was no Nepal as we know it now. It was a small princely state under India, that’s why history books shows Prince Siddhartha being born in India.

    Tang never recovered from An Lu Shan Rebellion.
    Tang rarely have administrative n military control in northern region.
    Tang was so weak that Tibet launched couple attacks. Tibet even sacked the capital. Tang emperor had to escape. At that day, Tibet was like 1930s Japan, Tang could not do anything to defend Tibet. Tibet continue to massacre Chinese. There was an attempt of peace treaty, but it was disguise to capture Tang high rank government officials. Couple high rank officials were captured, but one important military leader escaped. Tibet was angry n massacred n captured Chinese. Many Chinese did not want to be slaves n dove to canyon to end their life.
    There was no way Tang could fight Tibet.
    In 787, The chancellor, Li Bi, proposed the alliance to encroach Tibet, Abbassid Caliphate, Uyghur, Nanzhao, which is current day Yunan, and one of India state. Thats is your first picture. Abbassid was happy to join. Uyghuy was the important Tang alliance to counter Tibet. Tang emperors had to marry royalty princess to Uyghyer leaders in exchange for peace n alliance. Nanzhao was not happy that Tibet treated Nanzhao as slave, This alliance gave Tang the time to breath.
    Tibet was under heavy attack from Uyghyer that Tibet could not launch major war against Tang. Even with this major setback, Tibet still invade China, but onlynin border area, the encroachment prevented Tibet further major attack on Tang.
    Despite the loyalty from Uyghyer n weakening In Tibet, Tang continued to deteriorating, further emperors still didn't have solutions toward Tibet.
    Then, Tibet faced more divid in 840s. Uyghyer was defeated by Kyrgyzstan around the same time. The declines on both empires did not help Tang, Tang deteriorate further. Tang had to deal military coups, warlords, civil unrest. The corrupt Tang government did not know how to deal further Tibet demise. Tang did not have power to grab land. One local Chinese killed Tibet government officials n asked to rejoin Tang . All Tang could do was offering nobility. As Tang deteriorated further, that new state further divided from Tang.
