My mixes improved drastically when I followed the "use less plugins" approach.
Same here!
5 mix tips in 5 minutes in 8 minutes 🤣. Great content as always Colt!
Hahaha I tried!! Thanks for watching!
😂🤣
😂😂😂
Pushin' that like button before it even starts. Always a pleasure brother.
Thank you!!
Dude make a serie of these tips!!! Loved the narrow pan tip for depth! keep going man, Rock on!
Thanks for watching!!
Good takes and good recording saves on plug ins it's gotta have that vibe before hitting the mixing console. Automation is where mixers make their money.
"Thank you for stopping by for another video"
Thank you for making another video
Good tips man, from France thank you for the fab filter MB trick ! Peace
5 Minutes? LIFETIME TIPS that last more than 5 minutes! You're my inspiration!
I agree.. I’ll limit myself to one plug-in.. usually a SSL channel. You can use that for everything including de-essing! Great tips! Thanks Colt
Good tips here! Most of these I already do, however that mix knob deess thing is new to me. Great tip, I’m never really happy with deessers either.
My biggest mix tip is get the slate vsx headphones\software. This makes it so I never have to do a car test again. It has it built in. In fact I rarely even use monitors anymore.
My other biggest tip is to use a reference track to mix with. You can even use a reference track when recording. I generally find a Grammy winning album similar to the genre that I and the client both like.
Another mix tip is set your levels in mono and at relatively low volume. You can even do most of your mix like this, but doing at least the levels in mono really helps. The low volume thing works great for most music EXCEPT heavy music like metal or punk.
Last tip- use less reverb plugins/types. When you have 20 different reverbs it tends to really mud up the mix. I try to stick with 2, and 4 at the most.
Use melodyne on your esse’s and you can simply lower there volume
It’s really really good 😌
Using parallel De Essing is something I actually never thought of before. Thanks for that tipp, I will definately try it out!
Funny, using the exact same two EQs for my (mostly orchestral) projects. I deinstalled all others 😂
Brilliant as always!!! Great tips. Loved the first one. Have to confess that never occured me think of it that way.
Right On! All 5 or 6 ideas (I lost count too) were excellent! I love the short and quick format. You present the concepts, which urges us to go try it in order to verify, as opposed to you just demonstrating it...reducing the necessity for experimentation...zzz...then the next day, it is gone...
Thanks...Peace brother
Love your channel homie, so many music channels are just trying to sell us something rather than actually share some knowledge like they claim. Much appreciated, subbed
I think this is new intro .... and extro... (?) LOVE THEM BOTH... quick enough that I will not jump over it and very powerful... REALLY like the extro ... ending one.
Thanks!!
Amazing tips man, that 1st one is genius
Bro I just tried the first one and wow! That makes so much sense, I’ve always wondered how people did that! Thank you man!
I rarely get mix info that helps out of RUclips videos. This video is very helpful. I have spent a long time on a mix and gotten lost in the weeds so many times. The depth/width analogy was perfect and I have never thought in those terms. Making the mix breath with automation is on the money. Thanks for sharing.
Colt, your content is consistently the most valuable I find online. Solid, actionable suggestions that really work. Thank you!
May I suggest adding the Izatope ozone eq to your repertoire.
1. Clean, 2. Dirty, ...3. Air -y
Pretty much covers the whole spectrum. The ozone has a “air” quality that is nice for a slight change of color here and there, & works beautifully with the other two previously mentioned.
Thank you Cole! I've been trying to use less plugins myself; actually trying to get better (and not buying more) with the ones I already have.
Love that intro!
Amazing video as always man!
Tip #2 edit for Logic Pro users:
Use the 'Project Alternatives' tool for your alt mixes, keeps it all in the same session, easy to flick between the different mixes 👊
Hi, I used to do that but I lose oversight very quickly. Was it project 1 alt 2 or was it project 3 alt 5. O no it was 2 alt 3. I get your point but I stopt doing that. Kind greetz. :-)
@@jellewierda3828 If you get in the habit of giving them detailed names you just might find it useful again 👍
Enjoy your channel . Keep rockin' the Biggsie hat! He's a good kid and, if I remember he's an Illinois boy as well
Thanks Colt! Solid!
Thank you for the wonderful suggestions, peace.
Huge respect for you and your talents. One of the best channels on here. Thanks you for sharing you time and knowledge
Appreciate it! Hope it helps!
Great Vid! Thanks Colt!
Seriously, such a priceless channel
How is this the first time I've ever heard of parallel de-essing.... GENIUS! How have I never thought of that. It's so obvious... we parallel almost every other effect? Why not de-essing? I'll have to try this on my next mix! Thanks Colt!
Bro this was really good. A lot of meat, thank you for that. More stuff like thisssssss 🤘🏼
This is Gold. So much info .Thank you. I'm going to try mixing for the first time because of this one !!
Great tips!!! Thanks!! 👍🏾
Love it, short sharp and snazzy but full of great advice and info. Thanks again Colt keep ‘em coming buddy !!!! Much appreciated.
Hope it helps!!
excellent tips colt! 👏👏👏
Thanks!!
This video is gold! I've watched hundreds of hours of tutorials, but all the points you mentioned here were new to me
Thanks for helping us out, Colt!
Great advice
oooh i gotta try the parallel de-essing. I HATE de-essing so this might be my savior.
I feel you! de-essing just wasnt working for me in my last mix so I did it in parallel instead. worked wonders
Great tips!
great tips colt. i learned at least 8 things from this video LOL
Great video Colt. I appreciate these a lot
One of my tips is to create a busses for equal instruments like snare top and bottom. And use only processing on the bus
Pure gold! Thank you so very much!
Hope it helps!
@@ColtCapperrune I have been a musician most of my life but am just learning to record and mix. I never thought about height and depth and the illustration with the choir was amazing! Helps me a bunch. Thanks again for all you do and blessings to you and yours!
Love your videos Colt! Always high quality and high educational stuff!
Great tips Colt 🤘
Thanks!!
Really love this channel.
Hey colt! Big fan here. Wondering if u could do an in-depth video on panning and types of panning and how u pan and when u should pan. How u put things in perspective is easier to follow and learn from then most other videos.
Thanks a lot, man! Sucess ✌😊
The way you explain things is incredible really takes the pressure off of me when mixing 🎯
Really helpful man!
I'm liking that intro tho 👀
Appreciate it!!
Very thoughtful
Thanks!
about De-Essing: I search for S sounds, mark the and bring the Vol about 6-7db down. Sounds a lot better than DeEssing
More of this please!
You got it!
The deessser tips is so valuable
Colt, excellent.
great tips man! love ur energy
That was a 5 min well spent - cheers 🤘
So nice of you to share those tips man! Keep it going !
Neat concept!
Great tips buddy, keep it up! By the way what camera you use for recording?
Thanks!! It’s a Sony a6400 with some Sigma lenses
Bro, you have given me like the keys to the caidllac after I spent years tuning it and trying to get mys gas mixture right and now Im having so stop my self from going down to many experimental rabbit holes, cause now I find a meaningful end to each one but, I have always had a problem not writing two/ 3 songs at the same time, but now they are getting completed with satisfaction instead of hesistation and apprehension. Its brought me back to a steady slow improvemnt curve, It had felt like a sine wave til the magic is in the midrange video and you just reversed an incorrect assumption I had had for years and before you drew the stereo field I swear I saw it in my head and was like wow, WTF, inverted from what my brain was just kinda half processing when Im working.
Also Studio One has so many of the tools pre optimized to adhere to the workflow you have, "mixverb", is invaluable cause its CPU calorie free almost! and so much more, I'm not just a fanboy, they really have catered to the engineers job, but also as a producer when it comes to getting the idea out. and musician its just as satisfyingly to record into. THANK THANK THANK YOU though, you've been kicking rust of a horse thats got way more life than I ever could've imagined the first 2 times I quit and sold my studio equipment (track management and automate everything per section and appropriation). And for all the newbie following you who are paying attention, cause sometimes you dont realize til' it just works every time., do what he says.
I told my self after 5 Minutes you will shut the video down to keep this fair😜 But that parallel deessing tipp was to good😂
Hahaha thanks for watching!
@@ColtCapperrunewe have to thank you for making this videos🙏
I was prepared for some generic tricks, but right off the bat it started dropping gold
Top tip on the parallel de-essing. I work in Reaper, which has an amazing feature of wet/dry balance on every single plugin you use.
We all over do it when we add a new effect or bit of processing, so if I'm not sure - I tend to turn the knob to full dry (effectively bypass), 50%, then turn it back towards full wet just to see if there is actually any benefit. Surprised P/T still hasn't implemented such a feature.
Keep up the good work dude...
This is gold!
Lots of good tips here!
Yeah that intro is fire
Really cool video, great tips! Thanks! :D
Thank you so much! Great tips! :) / Andreas from Sweden
Great advice!
great video ! thank you for sharing !
good advice ..thank you !! im curious about the mix bus ..can you do a video on that and how about the softube curve bender vs UAD !!
Thanks Colt! Really informative. Loved your approach for depth perception.
Loving the Sharpie ASMR.
😜😜😜
GREAT VIDEO! Thank you.
thanks \m/ that was awesome
"Use less plug-in"
It might be difficult to actually do it in your work. Because it doesn't touch your heart that much or for some other reason. But it really works.
Of course, some engineers use a lot of plug-ins. And the results are also fantastic. That's because they're 'professional' engineers. They control every single piece of processing with incredible detail.
Always great energy in your videos Colt, and yes, fresh perspective is something that is easily lost if one spends too much time lingering over which one of the 50 plugins someone has to choose from for an hour zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz. might as well start over at another time
awesome.
ooooh I like the idea of narrow=further
Saving as a new mix number, as soon as you open the session - duh! Why wasn't I able to figure that out on my own?? I've always had that issue, that my backups were still being saved under the previous name.. thanks! ... and wow! - using only 2 EQs! Makes sense though!
Just excellent advice, as usual old chap.......
Would you be willing to share your De-esser setting, or how you use the two bands in the FF-MB compressor to De-ess? The wet/dry approach sounds brilliant. Thanks for the great tips.
This is dope 💯
Thanks!
@@ColtCapperrune thank you for the practical tips. I got my room tested after watching some of your vids and made one of the best mixes I’ve ever made. I’ll be sharing these for sure.
Great video, thank you!
I’m digging the intro song 🎸
Thanks!! I did a whole video on mixing that intro song from start to finish. Check it out if you haven’t yet!
Great. Thanks.
Thanks ☺️
Great video.
I loose my fresh perspective very fast and i'm aware of that but am trying to get better at it. I often have to stop the playback while searching for "that" plugin so I wont forget what I felt was wrong with the... kick.. or whatever..
like your content !!!!
The intro sounds wow
Start out by putting an EQ on the master and sweeping with a narrow ish Q. Then you hear what the very worst offenders are EQ wise and can fix them right away, leaving you with a better starting point :)
Great video :)
Good video format
Excellent tips, going to try the parallel de-essing.
The issue of depth got me thinking. If we record something close up and then spend time trying to back it away with panning, eq and reverb, why not just record it further away? Same thing with compression and volume automation. First we compress everything into a certain level, then we automate dynamics back into it. What if the band just played louder in the chorus? Ludicrous?
The idea of "fix it in the mix" imo is horrible
Get a great recording from the get go with everything you need, and you'll improve your workflow.
I've done that even with panning. Getting a good condenser large diaphragm mic to record for example a vocal quartet. I just put the guys in different positions recording their takes and I basically didn't have to do panning
This is my opinion. But when recording anything. It should never have anything on the channel. No compressors, EQ, nothing! If the source doesn't sound good raw. Then you need to re-record it.
Thanks bro
