    I‘m a fifth year med student and I‘m only now realizing, that studying 12 hours without a break shouldn‘t be a goal. We need to finally start talking about work-life-balance, how important it is to live (because guess what, it doesn‘t get better in residency). Learning to be more efficient is great, if it helps us get more free time, but we seriously need to stop that productivity trend/who can study the most in a week etc.

      You’re so right. What’s the point in studying so many hours if you’re missing out on so many other things? Ofc this is only the case for those who can afford to study less hours. Because some people don’t have a choice

      I personally love "studying" for math and physics because working problems is as fun for me as working Sudokus (read: a lot of fun!!) Conversely, I hate studying subjects that demand a lot of memorization, which I am terrible at. I could never have majored in history (although I love reading history for pleasure, when I don't have to recall the dates).

    This is the most useful and most importantly RELATABLE video I've ever stumbled across, thank you sooo much!!! 💖
    Everyone is talking about the pomodoro method and how good and helpful it is but for me, as you said, once I find myself finally immersed in the studying I don't want to take a break, I tried multiple times to get used to it but I always failed by taking 3-5hrs break on the phone/computer and I blamed it on myself...
    It is important that we find what works better for each one of us and the no phone method is a MUST for me, I'm either placing it somewhere that is out of reach or I take it into another room so the idea of getting up to grab it seems more difficult and because I have some time to think my action I've found myself getting up to get my phone but then in the middle of it I make a u-turn and coming back without it, in a sense I discourage myself from using it. Out of sight out of mind :)

    I made another version of the pomodoro. I started the clock and I was only allowed to stopp after it was at least 25 min.
    Sometimes I checked it ever 5 min....
    But even if I got into some kind of flow I wasn't interrupted by the timer.
    If I felt like I needed a break after 25 min I could make one.

    I think I have ADHD, but I wasn’t evaluated. But the thing is, my brain is constantly jumping from one thing to another. And if theres noise? Im so sensitive to it, the only thing that helps is a rain sound on Iphone or a really quiet ballads at the background. And the only trick that worked so far is getting my NS really, really calm with grounding techniques, before attempting anything. Im slowly try to increase the time of focused studying, hope its going to work, cause let me tell you, preparing for Bio exam as TOTAL dummy in this subject is no joke. In times, Im so envious of my brother, who has seemingly endless focus capacity. Where an hour for me is success, he can do like 9 hours without interruption like its nothing.

    I feel that as a doctor you shouldn't promote studying for so long without even mentioning the possibility of burning out. I used to study a lot... until I didn't anymore. And it wasn't because I didn't want to, it was because I was burned out and my brain wasn't working anymore as it used to, even though I enjoyed sitting in front of a desk and study all day long. Two years later and I'm still trying to cope with it. Now, as a master's student, I can't study as much as I did before and I do wish I was more careful with it. To people who are following this kind of advices, just be careful, because in the long run it can be contreproductive, as it was for me

    • @DrFayeBate

      Hey! Definitely agree to an extent - it’s not sustainable BUT it’s what I would do on the lead up to my medical school finals every year for a few weeks for short bursts to get me over the finish line. Plus realistically, it is what most med students do because studying in medical school really does require a lot of hours even if you’re studying efficiently.
      Also, if you watch to the end of the vid I do caveat the title ☺️

    • @rosymrg

      Any person studying medicine will dedicate insane hours of studying. That's how our field is. If you wanna survive and become a Healthcare provider, then this is the way. Obviously, ways to cope with the stress would be setting time for exercise, making sure you eat and sleep enough, and make time for something that makes you happy. It's all about balance. We don't have much time to spare.

    Strategies to Study for Up to 12 Hours
    Rule Number 1
    Build yourself up. Don’t expect it to happen overnight. Start off small. Time the amount of work you can do and increase it.
    Rule Number 2
    Don’t interrupt your brain when it is trying to get into a flow state.
    15 - 20 minutes with no distractions whatsoever.
    Rule Number 3
    Have specific rules for the times you are not studying.
    The break time spent not studying needs to be less stimulating and more boring than actually studying.
    This means no phones, which makes it easier to return to studying.

  • @szczurek_z_kawka
    @szczurek_z_kawka 4 месяца назад

    For me (also diagnosed ADHD) pomodoro doesn't work. Because when i finnaly catch a flow (sometimes after 40 minutes), in pomodoro method it's time to break. So I prefer to work 2 hours long and get longer rest

  • @MatthewIsFine
    @MatthewIsFine 5 месяцев назад +7

    But why though? Genuinely studying for 12 hours is excessive. Those breaks, like you said, are not true breaks. It's just meant to appease yourself to ultimately just work more. Everyone, yourself included, should be able to do the things they enjoy, even if that means watching a couple tik-toks. Depriving yourself and dare I say starving yourself of true breaks results in overindulgence and revenge sleep procrastination. These "not studying" Times do not provide the same rejuvenation that taking a real break does. It's the same thing as meditating instead of sleeping even if you're laying in bed, eyes closed, the physical activity is the same but the end result is not the same real rejuvenating rest that sleep provides. This strategy may last a couple days even a week, but the end result is going to be burn out

    • @DrFayeBate
      @DrFayeBate  5 месяцев назад +15

      I mean I agreed up until you started comparing meditation and sleep. Meditation is incredibly restful and low stimulation but agreed, it’s not a substitute for sleep. But I … would still sleep during exam season..
      In a world where we are constantly overstimulated, I stand by advising low stimulation break especially during exam season. Overstimulation e.g. from TikTok can be incredibly tiring and not restful at all.

    Hi there,
    I wanted to ask- what is your opinion on listening to music while studying? Would you say it disrupts the flow state or theres no problem in listening to it?

    does anyone have any recommendations of places to study aside libraries please? i find the environment quite tense and i am very fidgety and can’t sit down for long periods of time!
    when im at home i get up every hour or so but it feels like everyone in the library is sat still all day so i feel uncomfortable getting up and doing my 5th walk of the day😭
