For an old white Englishman, there's not many better pleasures than seeing the young'uns experiencing this music that I grew up with. This album is the best selling album of all time. It STILL sits on the Billboard charts and sells thousands of copies a year. For reasons which you are now eperiencing.
I think I have gone through several copies of this, from LP, Casette, CD and digital. I don't ever want it unavailable.
Back in 1980 going hunting with a friend he puts in a double 8 track of the brick in the wall...that was the first time I was old enough at 17 to understand

yeah, particularly if your english of a certain age its what we grew up with, it accompanied us on our journey from adolescence thru teens adult hood it helped to make sense of a lot of tings etc etc,
We always bought LPs because none of those other options existed. A local record shop owner said he was on his 3rd copy of Dark Side of the Moon. They were played so many times he had worn out his first two.

A lot of people say Dark Side of the Moon is overplayed and discount it. Personally, I NEVER get tired of hearing the entire album (over and over). In my view it's simply the greatest album of all time, hands down.

Tool. Very different music but still progression rock that takes you on a journey. Rush kinda is in the ball park as well as they didn't follow the typical rules of the 3 minute pop song, but Tool is the best comparison to Pink Floyd. They also are known for more of a light show then watching the band.

I've loved Floyd for over 50 years, this is one of their best songs, and agree about the 'labels'. If you haven't already done it, listen to the entire "Dark Side Of The Moon" album (or do a reaction of it) - probably the best album of all time, in many people's opinion.

As much as I love Floyd, I'm one of those " 'Animals' is Floyd at their peak musicality". Though, "Dark Side" cannot be ignored for lyrical content.

On your TV set up the Wizard of Oz movie, keep it paused... on your stereo put in the Darkside of the moon CD. Hit play on the Wizard of Oz.. there will be 2 sets of MGM Lions, the first in color, ignore it.. then itll change to the 1939 black & white lion... on tje 3rd roar as he's closing his mouth hit play on the Darkside CD... turn OZ volume off, sit back and watch a great experience of the way tje music is lined up with the actions of the movie or the lyrics line up with the scene. Roger Waters stated that this was not done by them on purpose, it is what it is... you need to check ot out, tjere moght be a version uninterupted on RUclips... the name would be under Darkside of the Rainbow... enjoy

Of course I am sure someone mentioned this but this Album has to be listened to from start to finish to get the whole experience. No Album ever moved as seamlessly from beginning to end as this one does for me. YES this is my favorite of all times !

The larger theme of Dark Side - the meaning of the metaphor - is about the dangers in life that can lead to lunacy (a word derived from the Latin for “moon”) and inner emptiness: obsession about money, war, overwhelming pace, taking for granted the passage of time, etc. It's a cautionary tale. Us and Them is about war specifically, but more broadly it's a person asking himself how we've come to this point of collective madness that leads us to do such crazy and horrific things to each other.
The whole album is a masterpiece, and the greatest thing about it is that it's still completely relevant - and the more you listen, the more you find in it to discover. Glad you're enjoying it...!
👏👏👏👏👏👏Well said/explained. To me, the journey through the entire album is a religious experience. It takes me to places that I sometimes don't even know, mentally. Any older hippie will tell you it's even better with a good doobie. For me, that and a black light, in a dark room with headphones, uninterrupted and it's on.
The first half of the song is kind of a life cycle, and it ends with "Great Gig", which is literally you dying and in your few brief moments going through the phases of grief/death which ends on those last few notes and mutters with your acceptance and getting peaceful with the end.
The 2nd half is more like what you said. But "On the Run", while it musically fits with the first part, is simply Roger Waters interpretation of his fear with flying, as he has said.
And US and Them is what you said but it leaves no doubt about who pushes us to this "US" vs. "THEM" mentality, which are the leaders. The last few lines kind of sum up this, "Down and Out, it can't be helped but there's a lot of it about". This is the condition of too many people, being down and out. "With, without, and who'll deny it's what the fighting's all about"
The song painted the US vs. THEM as you looking at others, in another country, or another race being the problem, the "THEM" that hurts you, but in the end people fight because of their feelings of lack, that they don't have what they need so when your leaders point to some other group and label it "THEM", you fall prey to their words, but those are the people "WITH". They play you against others to distract you from all they have. And it works that way all around the world and it has for thousands of years.

If these Floyd tracks seem to end a bit abruptly, that's because in the album, they flow directly onto the next track without a gap. If you listen to 'Time' next, which I highly recommend, then let it flow into the 'Great Gig in the Sky' just as it's meant to, and there'll be no 'cut off' ending feeling. Pink Floyd will touch your soul!
I've read that while recording this song they couldn't figure out how to end it so they just stopped. Personally I believe that Any Color blends perfectly.
It has Jones and it always will, I'm 70 and it still thrills me to the core.
This album or CD is best when you have about thirty minutes, it's cold and rainy out, you have a small fire going in the fire place, sit with a nice glass of an adult beverage, some smoke, and listen from start to finish. This set the record for being in the top 100 albums the longest ever. It's considered musically and lyrically a Master Piece!!

In my opinion, that is an amazing revelation about your wife being impacted with intense emotions as a result of listening to "Us And Them". The track does the same thing to me too. For me, the song sends intense chills down my spine, and my eyes fill with water when hearing it. The song is sheer, utter brilliance and very beautiful. It's 'chill' music at its finest. Love it!

"The generals SAT, and the lines on the map moved from side to side". Those lines on the map are human beings fighting someone else's war. It goes round and round as more men die, on both sides. To the men on the field, let it be known that it's not us vs. them, it's Us and Them.
Pink Floyd is one of those bands that have transcended genre. Whatever your taste (rock, rap, country, classical, etc.), and whatever walk of life you may be, there will always be Pink Floyd.

Lol my sister bought this album when I was 12 and I’m 59 now. I used to play this (vinyl) sitting next to the stereo on the floor with my headphones plugged in and the lights off. A definite milestone album in my musical upbringing.
58 here, The Wall was one of my first albums, made my way back from that. "Wish You Were Here" is my favourite. PF knows that it does not need to be as fast and virtuoso as possible. They give each note their space to develop to full effect, know that loud is only loud when there is a silent to compare it to.
It all depends in which time WITH WHOM you heard what. That stays forever.
Ditto, I got that LP around age 15. Thought I was gonna wear the grooves off of it. I just turned 60. Still NEVER tired of this, or of them. Truth spoken in their music is even more relevant today.
Saw this band live in Vancouver 1971, before this song existed...now I'm 69 and still into it.
I'm old enough that I have listed to this album since it was released in the early 70s. Pink Floyd music spoke to me throughout my life.with all its ups and downs. I still have my original LP, and have bought it on every format since. :-) It's wonderful to see their music still be appreciated by generation after generation. I am just a 68 year old white guy from Britain, and I don't expect I will ever meet you, but can I say a huge thank you for the pleasure your reaction has given me - it was fantastic to see the open imnded ness and emotional intelligence with which you completley got it. The song that follows this on Dark Side of the Moon is 'The Great Gig in the Sky' in which a woman singer called Clare Torry created the most extradordinary vocal imaginable. That song is about death and she starts with a howl of rage against the inevitability of death which gradually softens as she becomes reconciled to it - I am sure it will absolultely blow you away. The live version from Pink Floyd's 'Pulse' concert is equaly amazing, with 3 women sharing the vocals -

The lyricist for Pink Floyd for this, and all their best albums, is the bassist, Roger Waters. Though he is a troubled soul, he had a very unique way of distilling so many of the issues surrounding human existence into very simple, yet extraordinarily insightful concepts: us and them, black and blue, up and down, etc. True genius. Mel, I really appreciate your honest emotions reacting to this song. Between the words, the music, and the ethereal voices of David Gilmour and Richard Wright, this song (along with many others by PF) can often bring me to tears. God bless
Pink Floyd's one of the greatest bands if not the greatest!! Each one of their albums is a journey within itself. You literally have to listen to each one in it's entirety to really appreciate the music they convey. Their words are riveting and true to the core. Thank you for sharing!!
This is my favourite song from Pink Floyd, and that is really saying something. I guess people always read their own message from the song. It makes me think about how ordinary people are used and divided by the powers that be. Often played off against each other to further some agenda that ultimately only benefits the manipulating class.
Us and them (for me) is about recognising this division. Whatever it's about, the song is beautiful. Cool reaction as well.
Pink Floyd drew a lot of inspiration from gospel music, jazz and blues and fused them all together. They are definitely worth looking into. It's an experience when you listen to them. Wide range of emotions.

I feel that Us and Them is about the false separation that is humanity. Humanity has a tendency to see others as others, when really we are all one human family.
I listened to Us and Them as I was talking myself into going into a mental hospital to see my father after his breakdown 25 years ago. I cried like a baby after hearing it, and remembered that no matter how much anxiety I was feeling at that moment, my dad needed me, and I needed to woman up and put on a strong resolve to help my dad.
He passed away a couple of years ago now. Every time I hear that song, I remember that moment. Still makes me cry. That's a true masterpiece.

When I was about 22 years old, we would drive over to the Hayden Planetarium in New York City. We'd smoke a doob and then go in, lean back in our chairs looking up at the giant planetarium dome and watched the Pink Floyd Lazer light show to their entire album. It was the coolest, trippiest, deepest, amazing thing. Great memories 🙌

Chilling. Pure poetry. Simple but effective word choices that convey sharp social commentary. One great song off the best album of all time. Dark Side of the Moon is one of the first and probably the best concept album ever. All the songs are linked thematically - love, death, war, greed, time. You should listen to the album the way it was meant to be, all in one sitting as one song bleeds into the next musically and by theme.

yeah you've probably heard the ones i can't listen to any more, for being overplayed. those are their 'pop' songs played on every radio station. of course, that's not what they had in mind, those songs are still deep, powerful and ingenious. radio stations are unable to take you to the next level so you have to take it from there.
You should listen to the whole album, it can have a transformative effect on your life, no kidding. It's just that good, lol!
Pink Floyd will rearrange your mind and soul...my first experience with them was in 1976 when I was 7....my life has never been the same. I really believe that they are here to give us peace and joy in times of hardship and pain. They are therapy musicians as far as I'm concerned.

The day I got married, when the guests got seated I made sure to play "US & THEM". Best song ever created. Moves me to tears every time. It's about the lines we draw in society. But in the end we're only ordinary "people". Respect.

I'm a white teenage 15 year old, I've never really experienced segregation for anything other than me being gay. But sering two black adults, who I expect have been through some tough times react to this beautiful song is so moving. Thank you two so much for what you do ❤
@Ben is Blunt let me be blunt as well. segregation was gone long before these two were born. So no idea why you claim they have gone through some tough times. Is that because want to sound political correct ? Us and them was written in the 70's and had everything to do with the cold war, not with black and white. Yes, the lyrics could be applied to basically every conflict, but to claim that this was written as a result of segregation is beyond ridiculous.

And racism ? I live in a black society, I am the minority where I live and yes I get discriminated every single day, as a white person by black people. And they even discriminate other blacks (dark black is lowest on the ladder), Chinese etc
Racism is of all races, not just white to black.
Am sorry, but you have been indoctrinated quite a bit by people who have not been honest to you. Do yourself a favor and open your eyes. Yes, there will always be people who are racists, but that does not mean it is condoned by the government or by any law. And that is required if you want to talk about segregation.

I've been listening to Pink Floyd all my life, and I still get emotional.
I consider this album to be perfect from beginning to end. The first time I heard it probably around 1973 or 4 and I heard us and them honestly I cried too. I saw them twice in concert back in the day and I was blown away.
Us and Them (from Pink Floyd) is probably the deepst song you can get when lyrics is concern. Fabulous and comprehensive over us, mankind, it wont't get deeper than this.
Funny thing....... I have been to 3 Pink Floyd concerts and when you look around the crowd you realize we are more alike than what we see. People of all ages and all walks of life, of every color , are sitting with you watching in amazement. We all take away from this band what we get out of it but it all seems positive and connecting to me. I have all their songs and David inspired my to pick up a guitar. It got me through some very bad time in my life.
Masterful. These gentlemen were touched by something that is truly beyond this world, beyond our ability to comprehend. It is the spark of the exquisite, perfect, divine.

When listening to Floyd you sit back and close your eyes. If you smoke bud, then light up and enjoy the sound of perfect music.
"Time" is my favorite Pink Floyd song. Also very deep.
You know when a song, a film or a book are really good, when they awake deep feelings on you.
For your own benefits you HAVE to listen to the album in one go - each part is GREAT - but put together they turn into a MASTERPIECE - truly epic!
Lol...what a great reaction to the music that raised me. No one does it like Pink Floyd. I started listening at 11yrs old and still listen every day and now I'm 58 haha. There Is a lot to like with modern music, of course there is. You can only imagine what an effect it had on a young person growing up in the early 70’s. Now I am well into my 60’s so it is great that you guys really get this and all that it is trying to say. 50 years has not diminished it at all. Back in those days bands were just pounding out the notes, heavy solos, etc. PF puts soooo much space between their notes that just pulls you in. Even in their solos. This music was revolutionary back in the day BUT is timeless even to new listeners today.

1975 was my first time hearing it. I was 16. The album’s impact that first time listening sunk DEEP into my soul. The ripples from that impact have gone forth, moving thru every moment of my life since, permeating and coloring my soul with its soft silver-white moonlit atmosphere of wonder, mystery, and meaning. I can’t imagine life without the music of this timeless masterpiece in it. 48 years have got behind me since my first experience hearing “The Dark Side Of The Moon” and it still has me spellbound with its wonder and magic.
