Video idea: cost of keeping a large collection, caging, lightening, heating, electricity bill, chest freezer, feeders, baby rack if successful. I think it would be interesting for people to hear the actual costs of maintaining a reptile room! Thanks for great boa videos Jason!
Ooh. This is a good one. I do my accounting once a year for tax purposes and the figures are scary. I don’t think people realize how expensive it gets.
I've fell victim to every one of these mistakes at some point in my process of developing the collection I have. Great video for aspiring hobbyists/future breeders.
#6 is something I have noticed just by watching videos of different folks. It seems like IMG, VPI, Sharp, Super Fire, T+, True Red Tail, etc. have become the new form of name dropping. And anytime someone mentions a natural looking Boa, they refer to him/her as 'just a normal'.. and I absolutely can not stand this. It is almost as though folks are so concerned with being debased by having a natural looking Boa that they are ashamed to even show them or speak on them, unless they exhibit a feature of a more accepted Boa.. 'just a normal, but it is really clean and Pastel-like'.. 'just a normal, but it almost looks like a T+'. We are fortunate to have any of these beautiful animals, regardless of price, morph or locality. I just wish more people/breeders would see this, and I feel this will make the snake community that much stronger. Thank you for this video.. top notch and a top notch Boa.
Great video as always! How about a video on holdbacks. As a breeder what is driving your decision on holding back a snake. How it fits in your collection. And the other side of that- the tough decision NOT to holdback an animal you love.
I love all your vids, I wish I had found this video before I made a few of these mistakes. I really enjoy your input when you respond to my FB posts (Eyes of the serpent) I found that buying what I love and not what I just like has helped me grow my collection into what I want to see it become and reflect to the future offspring. Staying with 3 main pattern morphs (Raptor, Aztec and Keywest) and all the rest color morphs is what im striving to make my future offspring not only great looking but to bring out the absolute best that pattern morph can be.
Video topic: absolute beginners guide to breeding. Budget of X amout of money.... How much you should expect to make, the hidden costs (i.e. electric bill, feeder mice, shipping supplies), how long you might have to hold onto the babies that don't sell/correct pricing of the babies. Michael C. Blair, NE
I wonder how many of us are here for #5 after that FB post 😂 I was pretty proud of acing the list until you got to 6. Put in a different way. I have literally purchased animals simply for the sake doing business with a specific breeder, you were almost one of those people but I want a Burmese and that purchase can't be made haphazardly. I guess that proves that I've stopped buying impulsively 😂
Haha absolutely. If it makes you feel any better I made this video two days ago. #5 is more about buying power from a business perspective. Paying in full is always more powerful than a payment plan if trying to negotiate price.
Devin W. Knoxville, TN. What about a video series (or segment of each week's normal video) where you tell us about what you're doing with one specific pairing. That way we can get an idea of the breeding timeline by following one pairing through the whole season (food, heat, pairing, locks, ovulation ect.). Could also be a series of RUclips Shorts so it doesn't take up too much of your time.
Love your videos. Your topics are right on point with people that are getting into or back into the hobby and they just dont ask or at least thought about it.
Jason now that you are a big breeder, maybe it's time to go into the financial advising industry. Great information as usual, I take all this information you provide to heart, I hope others do the same. Looking at ahead at goals and the future as well as your financial situation is great advise. How much you can spend to get a base going instead of a single animal, there are many things to consider. The power of cash, as well if you offer you can buy multiple animals from a breeder to get better deals etc. I appreciate the transparency Jason! I would love to see a video that goes into building a first aid kit for snakes, what to look for, what is treatable and when to call a vet. What not to even try to do yourself, things of that nature. You already have my info so I'll leave it out! lol
I am planning on breeding blood pythons, although that's at least 5 years in the future as I'm waiting for my ones to actually grow up to breeding size. It will give me a chance to make a platform for them in the mean time. I made sure to get ones I would of gotten anyway as I always wanted them as pets. The entire reason I decided to breed in the future is because of how difficult it was for me to find the morph I wanted. So I looked into what would work well with the male I got and found an amazing female I would still love having as a pet. I love the two I have, and if by the time they are up to size the market changes then I'm happy with them staying as my pets. If not, well I will make it easier for other people to get some high end morphs! Don't really see this as something to make money, but purely to spread the hobby some more. As all we really have around here are normals and Ivories...

I agree that a new breeder should not try to buy into the most expensive morph, but I also think that trying to sell over-produced cheap base morphs could be a mistake too. New breeders need to pay attention to supply and demand, and try to find their own niche.

I'm a fairly new subscriber & future ball python breeder. At least l hope so with knowledge & videos like you're making to learn from. So thank you for that. I'm excited & ready to go with my breeding pair, rodent colony, incubator, hatch right ect. I'm just waiting on my female to get to size & healthy weight. I'm in no hurry so a couple years is cool. I've had more impulse buys than I care to admit I'm at a point though where I know exactly what I want genetically, I know what species I'm interested in keeping and what ones I'm not, and most importantly I know who I'm going to source my animals from and who I'm not As far as pricing them, I have zero expectation to make money, what I want to do is just be involved with the hobby in a greater capacity than just keeping some pets I want to share the snakes that I think are the coolest pets with other people. Justin M Stockton, CA I think a great video topic would be where to find food for these larger snakes, I’ve seen rabbits for sale on the internet that are sold for human consumption but would it be okay to feed our pets that? Would it have parasites, is it safe to just buy a whole young chicken from the grocery store?
Jason I would love to see you make a video on feeding a stubborn eater. I have a 9 month old male burm and he has been with me for 6 weeks, however i've only gotten him to eat twice. Luckily I have a female BCC that I feed second in case my burm doesnt eat, but any tips you could offer in a video on stubborn eaters would be amazing! Ryan M from Akron, OH
Good video man. I think one of the things that can be a dichotomy of this is getting the genes to produce a look you like. Spending less based on the "morph" but more on the look. Like IMG, Hypo Leopard, or Bloods. Same with Scoria & Labyrinth. Possible topic could be best practices when dealing with breeders or vendors online or at shows. Pet peeves you have dealt with or things you've seen & dealt with. Anyway, enjoyed the video as usual man, best to you & the family.
This is only my third breeding season and this is my first year that I will probably turn something of a profit. I think I was lucky to avoid a lot of these mistakes, probably because breeding has been secondary to keeping for me and I've also focused mostly on a species that requires a little less room and money to get into (hognoses). I'm glad I understood the economics of "hey, this morph is $2,000 right now, but it's simple recessive so it's easy to produce and will probably be down to $300 by the time I make it". The best way to ensure value and also be able to actually sell IMO is to go for a variety of morphs in your litters with the idea of producing a few high value, multi-morph animals. That's just my opinion though.
Wish I had gone for a pos het Lucy hog with facial markers last year instead of waiting. I also shouldn't have got a male first just because he had cute heart shaped conda spots.
I think it’s funny how people think that if they have this or that animal that they can then be accepted in the community. Acceptance and integration into a community happens with time, relationships, and effort. But I definitely feel that pressure sometimes. I’d really like to see a video in marketing your reptiles. I’m a small production breeder and have usually sold animals wholesale, with some individual sales too. My customers are great. I’ve built a small community on Facebook. But I’m not sure what steps to take next.
Im not a breeder, yet, but getting a good reputation started on morphmarket could be helpful for you. Building up possitive ratings and what not can help more people feel comfortable buying from you. I've bought about half of my collection from morphmarket, so there's definitely some sort of market there.

Great video Jason. Here's a question. I want a small (6) collection of my favorite radically different morphs: peruvian, img, sunglow, and superfire luecistic with breeding as a secondary goal. Could I pair some of them together and produce marketable offspring? Would you pick a certain gender for certain morphs when limited in specimen capacity? Watching from Memphis, TN keep rockin'!
Hey Jason,....I have a question not related to your video. I am looking to purchase a black devil male to mate with an img 100% het Anerythristic (rdr black eye) female. The male is pos het sharp albino. With it being possible het sharp, would it be an issue in the future pairing it with any of my other females that are 100% het Kahl Albino?

Michael p. jefferson oregon. You should do a video on if you can have snakes together or not. I see alot of different youtubers who have different responses. Some say yes depending on snake. Would love to know what you say on it.
Well, I think I've been a victim of some mistakes, but lately I've learned a lot! Do you think there is a difference in the musculature of the boas that have a larger enclosure vs those that live in a tub ? For example, having females in enclosure where they can climb and maintain adequate muscle tone could help breeding?
Thank you. Regarding the question, nothing that I have noticed. I’ve kept and bred both ways successfully. The difference between a 12 inch high enclosure and a 18 or 24 inch impish is so minimal that it just makes the keeper feel better. Now a room sized vs a rack could make a difference but I cannot compare
Disagree wen it comes to buying expensive snakes maybe it depends on species and morph but I’ve seen ball python mores that are sot after go up in value like sunset also it’s not just ten or five thousand single gene animals, it’s also morph combos that were the difficultly even for the original breeder to hit are a factor to consider because it’s all about supply and demand all you need is a expensive hard to reproduce animal
Although your not wrong. There is a very limited market for the amount of people willing to spend over 1k and super limited market for people willing to spend over 5-10k. IT’s EXTREMELY, difficult to sell something like that if you are a small or newer breeder.
Not everyone that uses a payment plan is poor at handling their money. I recieve my military check the 1st of the month. I may see a snake I like and need it held until I get paid again. It's not that I cant buy out right its I didnt plan for it.
That was never my intent either. I 100% understand that. Those are the instances where I talked about where you need to buy something before it sells and the payment plan locks it up.

The difference between a 12 inch high enclosure and a 18 or 24 inch impish is so minimal that it just makes the keeper feel better. Now a room sized vs a rack could make a difference but I cannot compare
Video idea. Regretful sells or other decisions that hurt your business

What is minimal size that boas can be breed?
If you search “ minimum size for breeding, Jason’s exotic reptiles” on RUclips, I made a video on that

If a motivated person with the right skills comes along all these people are giving out personal information are gonna get screwed
Those are the instances where I talked about where you need to buy something before it sells and the payment plan locks it up.
cryin about payment plans. shut it
Nothing wrong with payment plan. Just saying you have more buying power with a straight pay.
