From Afghanistan to South Korea, from Antarctica and now on to Kwajalein in the Marshal Islands, I've been working overseas for the past 7 years. It's been a wild ride full of fun and adventure. In this video I share my experiences and explain how I find my overseas jobs, how I initially found work in Afghanistan while the US economy was in a terrible recession, and how I continue to find what I consider to be some of the most rewarding and interesting overseas jobs.

If you're interested in becoming an electrician, plumber, carpenter, HVAC tech, or any other type of tradesman, the place to start is with an apprenticeship. If you are considering a career as an overseas english teacher, I recommend getting at least a Batchelor's degree before getting a TEFL or similar certification.
I can definitely relate. Went overseas after career stagflation stateside, been doing this about 4 years now. Best decision I ever made in my life.

Glad I found this video of somebody actually doing this kind of stuff. I’m in a similar field (Avionics) and have only been out working a year now and enjoy the company/work I’m currently doing. Had to move away from home to do so but it’s been a great experience. My hopes are to get couple years experience and try to secure a contract job. Doesn’t make that much sense for a single guy to stay in the US and have Rent/Taxes take 30-50% right off the batt when I could be OCONUS. Thanks for the video

That’s a long time to be here. I’m on my 3rd time in Afghanistan. I get tired of it, go work other contracts, but in the. The money lures needs back. Best place I’ve worked was Kwajalein. The hardest was out in the remote field camps in Antarctica.

Fellow international contractor here. You got my sub. One profession I'll add is HSE (Safety) is always pretty high in demand for western workers.
Im an Electrical Engineer myself.
I love the lifestyle and I wish that more of western society could see it through our lens. 9-5 Mon-Fri jobs are just drilled in to peoples brain as the normal thing to do. Theres a whole world of adventure, opportunity and money to be had outside of your own country or even your own city.
My 7-6 Monday through Saturday is definitely killing my soul...
lol. The irony of watching Black Hawk Down and then noticing your worker (hostage) pulled an Argos.
There's one job even more mobile then being an engineer-Chef. Cooks are always sought after and you often see people move to other countries for a job in a kitchen. Only downside to it is it's pretty low paying unless you make a name out of yourself and/or you get sponsored.
Great video. Will definitely check this out. I was in the Marine Corps, got out honorable in 2018, and finishing up my Criminal Justice Degree in May 2021. Had my mind set on security contracting for a few months. Time to start applying.
I used to work for Fluor Daniels in Texas. I almost went to Russia with those guys. That was back in the 80's I spent 30 years working as an industrial/commercial electrician and loved every min of it.

I enjoy overseas work, so far I have worked in China, Saipan, Guam, UK and have been to the tiny island of Kwajalein. Then I use these place to visit other spots. I went to Japan earlier this month and while working in China I went to Korea, Hong Kong, Taiwan, Philippines and Thailand. Currently I am working in Guam, Vietnam is next on the list to travel to in the next couple months. When this project is over I will go back to SoCal and work until I find another overseas job.

Persistence is the best advice I can give. Refuse to fail. It’s not the easiest life to break into, but once you’re in you’re amongst brothers.
Go to Seattle about once a year........used to be twice, with the currency rate.......from Galway City, Ireland. Just travelling, not working abroad. Work for an American Medical device company.......earn under $35, 000 annually.....but it's enough to travel where I want, when I want. I'm 39 now, was learning some coding/programming on my own time.....but the job markets are so fickle......don't know, think i'll just keep doing what i'm doing, like that Canadian programme years ago....called 'The Littlest Hobo', about a dog who just keeps moving on.....although i'm still based here in Ireland. The Geo-political sphere around the world is ever changing too.....and now you have a massive influx of mainly economic migrants here into Europe.....it's just a bit of a head fuck, to see where the chips are going to fall down the line. Meeting a friend from Seattle over in London in 3 weeks time to catch up, over a weekend, then Edinburgh for a wedding early September. Austin, Mexico City (for the Day of the Dead fest around Halloween).....and probably to Bogota and Cartagena. I'd say Vietnam & Cambodia around New Years......travelling is great, but for how long......who knows. Want to go to Quito sometime too.....not sure how they are after the Earthquake last time though.......making it up as I go along, thank God, I've no kids and a mortgage like the rest.....I see my friends buried in debt, pretending they aren't, with the big cars bought on hire purchase agreements, but i'm still on my bicycle.....LOFL. Maybe i'll head over to Tacoma for Paddys Day, or Bremerton, or even better....Seoul!...I hear the Koreans can drink.........the itch I can't get rid of, pity Seattle is expensive, like Vancouver up the road. Was in South Africa few months ago for Paddys, was like a free trip when I arrived with the Euro-Rand conversion, pity it's so dangerous. Sometimes, I feel that i'd be better off being down the South Pacific, having a nice quiet quality of Life......than being here in the rat race

I would love to go to antarctica and see the giants and the beings from hollow earth down there. I also read that the reptliains are the ones that took the Cali news crew and a seal team got their footage. Now the news station is suing the navy to get back their footage. The black sun facilitys would be cool to see.
Hey I worked in IRAQ for 7 years and Kuwait for 1 year. In the USAF I was in Korea for 5 years, Japan 6 years too... Overseas is WHERE THE MONEY is. I am trying to get into the Marshall Islands too now. Great Persistence on your part.
I think the main contract for work on Kwajalein in the Marshall Islands just changed from KRS to Dyncorp. I worked for San Juan Construction when I was there, but I only stayed 2 months, opting to return to Afghanistan for an a little more $.
Thanks for the TIP. I will move my Resume to DYNCORP .. thanks. I will ask my Buddy working there now for year if he is aware of this yet. I know rumors... I learned also AT&T may be laying off 20,000 other workers in the USA. I got laid off in 2004 for 6 months till I got a contract with ITT there for 7 years. YES, I was awesome then... TECH to foreman and then Network Engineering... for all of Iraq for the US ARMY SIG BATTALIONS that rotated there.. .MOST important thing is 1.) YOU ARE THEIR Continuity during their military personnel (UNIT) rotations. It makes you valuable to them. and 2.) your security clearance (SECRET or TOP SECRET is a TOOL TOO you should have). Once those are secure. You will be fine... Invest all that money.. you live in a small space for now... but DREAM BIG.. but by the time you retire when you are 65 or 70 (if you are in great physical and mental ability like I am certain I will be) You do NOT need a Big home... I learned the older you get the smaller the "BOX" you need. Just enjoy life. I would never change my LIFE experience with anyone. I been through hell and awesome adventures too. IN Baghdad, I can say I easily endured 160 FOB attacks in those 7 years there, great thing they brought in the PHALANX SYSTEM for "INCOMING" .. but I was nearly blasted by MORTARS, ROCKETS and SNIPER FIRE into the camp too.... One Being a 240mm ROCKET fired from 6 miles away near the AW FAW Palace.. leaving a 6 foot hole in the Cement by 6 feet wide. Killing two Filipinos... and scaring the US GUARDS they were replaced by Foreigners too.. sounds bad doesn't it. I think the guards were from Maui. NEAR you now. Not Positive but an English Colony in the Pacific.

Awesome. I’m working at a place called Summit Station in Greenland right now and editing a couple videos about this place. Internet is very limited here, but I’ll upload them in mid August when I leave the ice. This place is crazy, something like 2 mile thick ice. Definitely the hardest but funnest place I’ve worked yet.
It made me rich and payed off all my bills

Metal framing and drywall superintendent here. I really want to work on overseas bases. I heard the pay is steller, I just cant seem to get my foot in the door.
Try with Fluor. Look for their LOGCAP jobs and apply for anything even vaguely related. Fluor lost the contract for most of Afghanistan to KBR but they still need to maintain staffing levels for the next few months and people are bailing out right and left. When KBR takes over most people will simply transition over to KBR so now is an easier than normal time to get in. Try to find a way to use a few keywords in your resume even if you have to create a section talking about goals or something vague. “LOGCAP, military, Maximo, Afghanistan” are good keywords to get your resume past filtering software. Understand that for your profession they only hire a few Americans and fill most of the jobs with low wage workers from other countries. Also, the pay is not as high as it used to be. I can’t speak for your specific trade, but electrician now make about 107k. It’s only still worth it because it’s mostly tax free and you have no living expenses.

There’s always a need for heavy equipment operators on these overseas jobs. My dream job is to get onto a project called the Traverse. The Traverse is a convoy of heavy equipment that drives across Antarctica from McMurdo station to the South Pole Station to resupply the South Pole Station each year. It’s predominantly heavy equipment operators and mechanics that make this epic journey.

I had an interview for a heavy equipment operator at PAE and the recruiter said it was a 4 year waiting list. Do you happen to have any insight or leads if there are any other forums or careers pages I should be looking at? Im down to deploy anywhere from Antarctica to the Sahara dessert. I think you’re recruiter was exaggerating about it being a 4 year waiting list. Out here in Niger our equipment operator is talking about quitting after the end of the year. Not sure if he actually will though.

There are likely more knowledgeable people on that specific topic. Since I’m an electrician rather than an engineer, if I made a video talking about something I didn’t have first hand knowledge about then I probably wouldn’t make a very good video.

@@FallofftheMap Im not doing embassy work. I work for a company and we work with the military. Funny thing, I applied for Kwajalein same time I applied for Antarctica, and I got Antarctica of course. While there i ran across a woman whos husband went to Kwaj, so basically he took the position I applied for....

Can we have a detailed rundown of your day to day workloads? What are you are physically doing most of the time? Running cable and ladder? or is it breakdown work for destroyed machinery etc? Currently an industrial electrical apprentice in New Zealand and am considering overseas work.
It’s wildly dependent on what sort of overseas location and can change a lot. In Afghanistan it was mostly small repairs, a few ballast changes, trouble-shooting various building wiring that had lost power, a lot of generator connections and disconnects so tired old generators could be swapped out. In Antarctica it was mostly the same, but with some new construction of large ATS systems and a lot of preventative maintenance inspections. Also, setting up and breaking down seasonal field camps. In the Marshall Islands it was mostly demo work and building a new man camp. There was one smaller company I worked for in Afghanistan that paid me for 9 months to do nothing, just wait for parts. It’s really difficult to detail a typical work day in an atypical job.

I’ve been looking at overseas contracting for firefighting. I don’t know if anyone else is, but PAE has jobs for Fire in Antarctica, Iraq, and Afghanistan. I also believe there’s fire maintenance at the American embassies in Russia and Japan.
Embassy work and Antarctica will both be relatively low paying for overseas type jobs. Fluor pays firefighters quite well, but their contract is up in a couple months. They’re fighting it in court, but it’s definitely not as stable a job as normal.

Dude I made it. I 'm on 1.5 years Iraq. I love the lifestyle. At this point for tax reasons and USA is kinda going down the toilet, I want to move to a different country, what would you recommend? Maybe I'm wrong but after Afghanistan stopped and Iraq got a lot less busy. The overseas thing is slowing down big time. Again maybe I'm wrong, I hope so.
I can't tell you how much I appreciate your videos Jesse. I've been a journeyman electrician for about the last 9 years with a ton of varied experience and I'm planning to apply with PAE for the 20/21 summer season at McMurdo. Is there a specific time that you think is best to apply? How likely is it to find more interesting contracting jobs around the world after a successful season in Antarctica?
Having Antarctica on your resume certainly helps with getting other overseas jobs. This summer I worked in Greenland and was tapped for the job through my Antarctica connections. A word of causation. I am hearing some negative things from folks about this last season down there, specifically at South Pole station. As for when to apply... I’d run an Antarctica job search every week and apply the moment the program posts the jobs for the season. I don’t know exactly when that will be this year. I’m a couple years out from my last season in Antarctica at this point.

@@joshy5lo I had the best experiences with Fluor Government Group, but I’m in the minority, most of my coworkers hated them and preferred places like KBR. FYI, I’m currently working on getting a job with Amentum in Iraq after working for a company Amentum bought out.

I was there for the 2012 VBID. They were dialed in that year, hitting DFACs, the Jordanian TOC, the fuel bladders... I demobed after the VBID because two of my friends broke their necks in that one. Managed to stay gone for a couple years before the money sucked me back in.
I am actually thinking working overseas as a photojournalist and journalist especially Europe, New Zealand, and Australian once I am done with a master's in media studies and have several years of experience. I don't know if that counts. When I have children I will let them study abroad, travel aboard, and work oversea hopefully it becomes a reality.
Taxes to be paid in Antarctica and now even if working in Afghan and in Iraq. One of the best benefits working overseas is being exempt. If going to Antarctica be sure to claim a state that doesnt require to pay state tax. This will help a little, but Federal you’ll still have to pay in Antarctica is what I was told.
It’s true. Antarctica is not a country so it is not part of the tax treaty that almost all countries have with the US. The US taxes it’s citizens unless they fall under the protection of the very specific terms of that tax treaty.
I was wondering what you thought my chances were of getting a canine job overseas? I have 14 years government airport security. One year canine and private security. 20 years security experience in the private sector. Six years Army National Guard.

The problem with big companies is their like Walmart. I went from vectrus making 120 a year to another company paying 220. Big companies will get you in the door but pay shit.

There’s a big range on wages for welders. If you’re licenced from the US or EU and certified to do things like pipeline welding you could make over 100k. If you have the skills but not licensing and certifications that most contractors recognize then the pay might be quite low as you’ll be competing against low wage workers from many other countries.

I haven’t. I think it would be a pretty short video. It would be hard to stretch out saying “health insurance, free food, housing, and transportation, and a high salary.” Maybe I could just repeat that line a couple hundred times. /s
@@FallofftheMap When you get R&R, is it like a paid vacation or is it like a leave without pay?
It varies from contract to contract, but usually you get a minimal amount of pay (about 25% of what you normally make) but you also get a charter flight to and from Dubai (if you’re working in Afghanistan). From Dubai you’re on your own. Some guys go home, but a lot of people avoid spending time in the US so they can claim the foreign earned income tax exception and pay no federal tax on their first 100k each year.

It’s still a thing. There’s work right now on US bases in Iraq, Somalia, Niger, Djibouti, Kuwait, Poland, Guam, Marshall Islands, and many other places. There’s also work at embassies around the world. Of course the work in Afghanistan is gone now.

Hey man! I'm so happy I found this video! I've been watching a ton of your videos and other adventures you've had. Im really in envoy of your lifestyle and work. I'm single and a 5 year plumber, with no kids. Just left a bad company in San Diego about 2 days ago. I've always been wondering how working over seas would fit me. I went too Thailand last year for almost a month last December. I loved it there but wasn't to sure if I could make a good living in a area like Phuket, Thailand. Anyways what I'm wondering... I worked with a lot of electronics. Any idea if plumbers overseas either on base in a war zone or on the Antarctic shelf. What are a lot of plumbers you've been around complaints or concerns in some of the areas you've worked? Like, would I be stuck snaking drains and doing sewer re pipes all the time. "Really dirty service kind of stuff?" Or more new Construction environment. I'm sure I'd be doing both... but wondering what are some complicated story's you've heard of after doing this for years for plumbers you've worked around.

There’s a lot of demand for plumbers in Antarctica, but it’s tough work. Lots of burst pipes and frozen shit. Most of the overseas work I’ve seen is maintenance. There is multi-year new construction project going on in McMurdo Station, Antarctica. This summer I spent quite a bit of time with a crazy plumber in Greenland. Tough work in pretty nasty conditions at he installed an outfall and I put the heat trace on it. We’d typically work until we felt like we were getting too close to frostbite and then go warm up for a few. Right now there’s a big contract change in Afghanistan from Fluor to KBR. Fluor is having a difficult time manning the job during the last few months of their contracts. I’m heading back over with them this month. When KBR takes over most people will just transition over to them. It’s a good time to apply with Fluor with the intention of switching to KBR. The hits are long but the work is easy. You usually have “helpers” that do the grunt work. However, one of the reasons it’s hard for them to man the job is that the new contract is expected to be lower pay, so lots of people are jumping ship.
Thanks for the info brotha! I can imagine that working as a plumber in Antarctic temps would be challenging. But I'm always looking to expand my experience in different environments. "San Digo has me spoiled" haha. But would love to travel and explore some different types of environments before I'm older. Also like you said the cash in afganistan or areas like that are really good. But what you trade for the high pay is something people need to accept themselves. So sense companys over there are switching hands. Which one would you suggest I try and contact first?
Also if were doing new Construction in these kind of areas are we given print? Or we have to figure it out ourselves?

Hi Brian, I just saw your name pop up on my Instagram as well. As a lineman with a clean criminal history you are an ideal candidate for overseas work, either on the military/sandbox side or on the science/Antarctica side. McMurdo Station in Antarctica is currently going through a rebuild. There is likely increased demand for linemen there.

At the moment work in Afghanistan and Iraq is scaling down but there’s work in places like Kwajalein, Diego Garcia, and Guam. I’d recommend putting your desired job title and any of those place names in the description field and leaving the location blank in job search engines such as Indeed. Run your search once a week or so and see what comes up. Antarctica typically hires a couple times a year as well.

Cool. Yeah, probably 5 & 1/2 years ago. Last time I was in Afghanistan I spent most of my time in Shank, but I would have been passing through Bagram on my way out. I demobed Oct 2012, travelled the world, contracted in a few other crazy places, then just came back this last October. Small world.

Yes, but in two radically different directions. IT for environmental science on the Arctic/Antarctica research stations (I’m at one in Greenland now). UN peacekeeper work could lead to all sorts of shitty places. War zone and quasi war zone stuff.

There are armed guard and various security contractor positions, but after 20 years of war there’s an oversupply of applicants pushing wages down. However, depending on your availability to get a security clearance, embassy security might be a decent option.

I'm a HVAC maintenance technician in training and am considering an overseas contract after graduation. What are the pros and cons of these contracts? I understand that they are full year contracts but what is the average work schedule and salary reality.

I typically don’t work more than a few months at a time at this point because I live in Ecuador and can afford to take most of the year off. Last time I worked a full year I made about 110k, but with almost no federal taxes (107k was exempt under the foreign earned income exemption) and no living expenses. Last job I had averaged about 15k per month and lasted 5 months. Next gig is back in the US at an Alaskan fish plant and will be about 17k per month for 3 to 4 months but taxed since I’ll be back in the US.

I believe KBR and PAE are both hiring truck drivers for Iraq. In Afghanistan, Fluor is using mostly low paid Balkan, Indian, and African workers for the truck driving jobs, but there may be some exceptions. I’d also recommend looking into DynCorp. They’ve been picking up a lot of smaller overseas contracts such as some of the South Pacific island military stations.

It’s possible, but less likely at the military sites as it is at overseas locations that are either commercial in nature or places with research stations like Antarctica.
So I was a LAV mech with the Marine Corps for six years and I'm currently an Electrical Power Production troop. I'm really looking to getting overseas to contract.. I've applied to numerous openings and haven't had any feedback. Any advice on how to get on a recruiters radar
If you haven't already, I'd try applying for a power gen job with Fluor. Turnover is high right now because they just cut the bonuses down a bit. A lot of the guys that had been out here awhile took it as a sign that it was time to go. If you're not getting any responses, you might want to review to see if you're using the sort of key words in your resume recruiters are looking for. Sometimes they use software to filter through resumes. I don't know exactly what the right keywords are, but the things I included on my resume were "LOGCAP, Maximo, overseas, deployment, medically cleared, background check."
Fall off the Map also is the length of the resume important. I feel like mine may be too long but i felt like i needed to include my marines and airforce service along with the 2 civilian jobs that correlate directly to the openings

I have never heard of him. What's he selling? I tend to feel the that overseas contracting is a tight community and that's it's bad form to try to sell information or access to other contractors. The good guys are happy to share their information freely.

Yeah, there’s a lot of hiring right now. I put out a few apps and got offers from EXP-Federal for an electrical inspector job in Afghanistan and a JW job from Dyncorp also in Afghanistan. There’s also a big project to rebuild McMurdo Station Antarctica. Parsons is currently hiring for that one.

2014/2015 I think. Or maybe it was 15/16. Worked for Hess, but indirectly through a small subcontractor.

Yes. Not impossible but difficult. KBR offered me a job in Iraq when I was a second year apprentice, but that was back when KBR was more interested in boots on the ground than qualifications. I passed on that job. These days, OCNs (other country nationals) fill the apprentice/helper jobs because the can be hired ridiculously low wages. You could, however, try to get hired outside of your trade, as a laborer or small appliance tech, if you feel confident you could do the job.

In my opinion, it’s better to complete an apprenticeship first, especially if it’s something like electrical or plumbing.

I know Fluor has a small medical department, I believe mostly based in Bagram. It’s likely that KBR and DynCorp have similar departments. Basically they just check shot records, give shots when needed, and examine injured or sick workers to determine if they need to fly out of Afghanistan for treatment.

Gotta do this when you are young...no way can you have a Normal Life, Wife, and Family working overseas...save /invest your Money you make and then get out.
Or when you're old. Lots of people in their 50s and 60s working overseas.
Definitely a way. Gotta find the right gig with a schedule that fits. I’m home 4-6 months a year. When I’m home I’m home nothing hold me back from traveling or just doing things with the family. Not sure I’m able to make 100k plus for 6 months or work.
Might not be a fit for everyone......but definitely doable.
Tactical AthElite agree. It’s all about the right gig . My advice is to save majority of your check 1 1/2 to years and go home. Invest . Some ppl get stuck in contracting life . It’s unbearable when you’re a family person
