      I'm about to order the gpd win 4. After plenty of research it is clear that when docked it is dramatically more powerful than the Steam deck, able to reach and maintain a 45w tdp without issue for long play periods. That is higher than most laptops with a 6800u. When unlocked it is still more powerful than the deck, still has a bigger battery, is smaller and more portable, and has the built in keyboard. The Steam deck is nice for what it is, but it just can't compare when docked the 6800u puts out so much more power, and the 6800u devices support eGPUs. So the win 4 can also be docked with a spare 2070 I have laying around and it will have enough power to do anything I could ask of it.

      @@cheeeeezewizzz 3 Month out of date answer but 45W on a 6800u/7840u means very little in actual fps. The issue is diminishing returns where you can double your power budget after 25W and get very little in return as your GPU cores are already peaking or are limited somewhere else (memory bandwidth). Look up benchmarks from The Phawx and you see the same effect when those APU are pushed to 30W.
      ruclips.net/video/DDGg5kzwje4/видео.html
      Notice how the line flatlines ... yea, ...you can push in another 15W but your barely going to get a few extra fps. But your turning your device into a windtunnel that wakes up the neighbors.

    I just wanted to say that your review is the best one I've seen, thank you so much for taking the time to create such a high quality video review! I've been looking at this since it got announced on IGG, but decided to stick with the Steam Deck for the time being. Now that the 7840U refresh has been announced, I've been looking for new reviews of the 6800U version to hear more experiences. My main concern is the comfort level and duration holding it. You specifically mentioned that, and your coverage made me consider this more. The 10.1 inch screen is the biggest draw for me, but it is meaningless if you can't hold it for long periods of time!

    a battery life test between the Steam Deck and the Win Max 2 using 40 Hz would be cool to see. I have to admit, I was expecting more battery life from the Win Max 2 but I guess with all those extra ports and bigger screen, the bigger battery kind of takes a hit.

    I've am really liking mine, mainly for a notebook though. I missed out on all the netbooks, I always wanted one but when they were popular they actually sucked. The Win Max 2 is kinda a childhood dream answered for me. The only way I can play it is laying down, head propped up on a pillow, and it resting on my stomach. It is more comfortable laying down than any other handheld because how the distance between the hands and the stomach, supplied by the keyboard, is perfect. Other than that I don't like playing games on it unless it is plugged into a monitor or TV with separate controllers hooked up to it. It is powerful enough to play PS3 games, which in itself is amazing.
    I do love it for a notebook, can't stress that enough, I've traveled with it and this is all I need for a computer and I can play games laying down at the motel at the end of the day.

    Excellent review and congrats on winning that Win 4 from GPD!
    Just wanna share some thoughts and would like some opinions.
    I have a 2020 model Predator Helios 300, (15.6inch, i5 10300H, RTX 2060 6GB and with the base 8GB RAM config) I also have an OG Nintendo Switch. I've recently gotten into Retro gaming mainly just GBA (as I've been a Nintendo handheld gamer since kindergarten) and I use Retroarch on my phone to scratch the nostalgia itch. I put emphasis on handheld as I've never owned a desktop setup, I've had a PS4 but rarely did I use it. I do however use my laptop for work and/or play as I do have a monitor and keyboard/mouse setup for it at my office and I've been always on the go. I'd like to keep my laptop and my Switch but I do sometimes like to put them aside and enjoy the convenience of having one less thing to carry around with me. The laptop can do most of the gaming and work while the Switch is there for Nintendo first party games.
    Being a mostly handheld gamer/laptop user the launch of the Switch opened up a ton of possibilities, I mean back then the PSP Ports of games were something else back in their day but a straight up Switch COPY of a console game (no cut content, no differences) is truly life changing. Then came the Steam Deck blurring the lines between home console and handheld even further. It can be said that the Deck came in with fresher hardware and the Switch is now long in the tooth but that's just the reality with the big companies, they cant just roll out iteration after iteration of a console every couple of years (heck even months! I'm looking at you ANBERNIC!) like an iPhone or Samsung Galaxy. Now I don't know how long the Steam Deck will stay the way it is, but both the Switch and the Deck have software optimization as part of their advantage with Switch having exclusive titles as a bonus.
    These 6800U ultra mobile gaming PCs are almost in a league of their own especially when you consider that they're literally portable WORK and PLAY machines. Brute force is their main advantage where some software optimizations are not up to par with the likes of Deck optimization. Getting a 6800U device for the WANT of it is really tempting, especially if it can substitute a 15.6-inch laptop in case I don't want to lug it around with me.
    I'm stuck with this dilemma of budget, performance, portability, and versatility.
    -The GPD Win Max 2 and Win 4 can be a more portable alternative to my laptop although it'll cost as much as my laptop, maybe even more.
    -Given a limited budget, the Deck would be great as it can also run Windows but still not as versatile as the GPD handhelds.
    I've read news that the Win 4 can run SteamOS almost natively but I don't know how if its just the front end or it'll have any optimization improvements; Valve has really nailed the software side of things. And with that, with all things considered and If I'm willing to shell out as much as my laptop's worth of money for the price of significant portability, I'll go for the Win 4. The Win Max 2 is great, but I can't justify the cost and performance reduction for a bit more portability. And if budget does not permit it, I'll go and grab a Deck for the hell of it.
    What a time to be alive for portable gaming.

      Thank you, it's because of viewers like you that suggested I enter and I am so thankful for it!🙏🤗
      It's always so difficult to make decisions because we are so fortunate to have so many choices nowadays. I'm not sure if this will help but here are some things to think about.
      The Win Max 2 is definitely a very nice laptop replacement. It sounds like you are tired of having such a large laptop that despite its power is just not the kind of portability you are looking for. The cool thing about the WM2 is that it is more than suffice for doing work on the go and if you really need that extra GPU boost, you can always setup an eGPU and have a fairly powerful "desktop". Now, the Win 4 is a very different approach to design from the Win Max 2. One is doing a very good job at being a potential laptop replacement with gaming controls as the secondary.
      The Win 4, on the other hand, is trying to give you as much power in as compact of a size as possible with a keyboard in this case being the secondary. We can't understate how impressive the Win 4's size is, have you seen it compared to a Steam Deck? It's definitely going to win in terms of portability with power and at a surprisingly very competitive price point.
      Finally, nothing will beat the Steam Deck on its price to performance. However, Steam Deck really is best designed for the Steam OS experience and all of the support that Valve is giving it is based on them working on improving proton and Linux gaming. Likewise, while many devices will run Steam OS, the Steam Deck will always be the best Steam OS experience because of Valve's commitment to Steam OS and Steam Deck.
      I'll be happy to keep talking back and forth with you if you want to put some thoughts down. 😉😁 Thanks for stopping by and commenting.

      @@retrotechdad awesome! Thanks for the detailed reply.
      Yes, we are indeed spoiled with choices nowadays. Back then we can only dream of the capabilities these devices are able to do now.
      I was about to mention something about bringing only 2 machines with me one for work and one for gaming. Lugging the laptop around can fulfill both roles but I'd have to be in proximity of an outlet to be able to properly game on it, no problems for lighter titles though, aside from the bulk, the pick up and play aspect of the switch is what spoiled me. Hence why I have to bring 2 devices with me. Pick up and play is not a thing with the laptop as it does need to have a place to set down on and do some prepwork like clearing a desk or busting out the power brick. I'd lose interest in playing by the time I even pull out the laptop from my bag.
      Oh and yes, the Deck is quite large. And if I'm going somewhere it's going to be a laptop and a switch or a laptop and a Steam Deck. But not the Deck and a Switch. It cracks me up every time I think of it. Having two of the same form factor devices one being big. And the other BIGGER 😂 The Win 4, compared to the Deck is really something.
      As for the priority, it's situational. I don't really need the keyboard as I'm not gonna use it for typing mostly. If I'm gonna do spreadsheets then the numpad on the laptop is the way to go. I'm talking about situations where I had to do work and don't have my laptop with me. And since my nature of work concerns graphics work, its better to just carry around my trusty mouse and work my way with the shortcut keys on the keyboard of the Win 4. These situations are more of an "uhh we need some changes to this and that" but I'm away from my office kind of situations. So the keypad on the Win 4 while not the strong point. Is still a nice to have feature.
      One thing of concern though, for all 6800U devices, is the heat. Coming from a laptop with a lot of heft from the heat sinks and dual fan setups, are these new chips inside really that efficient in giving performance for less heat? I wonder how these devices fare in the long run.
      And will setting up an e-gpu ease the burden on the APU relegating only CPU tasks to the Handheld/Mini PC. If that's the case then this is a real game changer. like how the Asus ROG Flow X13 introduced itself as an ultraportable gaming laptop with docking capability. But the price is too astronomical for my poor bank account. And this is where the Win Max 2 comes in.

  • @FS-zt6tm
    @FS-zt6tm Год назад +1

    While this is a lot more expensive than a Steam Deck, I think it's actually worth it long term if you consider it's upgradeability. WM2 can be upgraded to have a total amount of storage of 9TB's! vs the Steam Deck only capable of 3TB max. WM2 has a 32GB RAM option while Deck only has 16GB max. WM2 is capable of utilizing an eGPU for a boost in performance, even an M.2 eGPU that is relatively easy to access with the 2230 slot on the bottom of the device which offers less performance loss than thunderbolt while the Steam Deck doesn't offer that option. Not to mention all the extra ports and the built in Wifi-6.
    But the most overlooked thing that I've come to appreciate about the Win Max 2 is the fact that the battery isn't superglued in. As soon as I saw those early tear down videos where Linus tried to take the battery out of the Steam Deck, I knew it wouldn't bode well for the longevity of the Steam Deck. Literally every portable device will need to have it's battery serviced at some point down the line so making the battery that difficult to replace on the Steam Deck is a head scratcher.

    • @retrotechdad
      @retrotechdad  Год назад +2

      Yes, I think the device has legs and will last a few years if you are looking to use it as a laptop or desktop replacement.
      Very good point about the battery, I absolutely hate products that aren't easily serviceable by the end user. I fully believe in the right to repair and as someone concerned about preservation, I hate seeing perfectly useable devices get lost because of things like that.

      I did back the IGG campaign but another great place to get the WM2 from would be Droix.net. They are based in the UK I believe, but they ship via DHL and are very responsive and quick with service. I've used them many times in the past!
      They did have the WM2 on a small sale during Cyber Monday but their markup isn't enormous compared to the sellers on Amazon. I'd say give them a shot if you want a quick turnaround time, keep in mind that they only seem to have the base model in stock (which is what I have).
      BTW, GPD is safe to order from via IGG, I just don't know what their ship times are like right now since I think they are out of stock on certain units. I don't think they would be as fast as Droix or Amazon if you are looking for something to arrive quickly.

    is it possible to target a steady 40 fps for some of the harder titles you tested to save battery life without sacrificing too much graphical fidelity? I know 40 hz was the sweet spot on the Steam Deck and honestly I can barely tell the difference between 40 and 60 on the Deck, I was wondering how it would look on the WM2. Also, are you planning on testing an eGPU with the device? I'm also considering this setup instead of a desktop setup.

    • @retrotechdad
      @retrotechdad  Год назад +1

      Yes, you can set a 40 fps cap. I've done that on many other devices for various reasons. You can also set a hard cap on the TDP so it doesn't draw more power than you want it to.
      I am planning on getting an eGPU, I need to do some research on which one works well with the WM2. I'd end up taking the GPU out of my desktop and throwing it into one of those enclosures. I really like the idea of having a very mobile and compact "desktop".

    So I think you either like the form factor or you don't.. There are now a few options of 680m devices so you can chose to go for something smaller or more hand-holdy... personally I think all the options are over priced.
    Over priced in that you can get better performance out of a gaming laptop for the same money.... but then these devices are not gaming laptops.
    Paying over 1000 bucks for something running a 680M is nuts... the graphics are getting there but not yet perfect for 60 fps gaming on high settings, we need another gen or two before we have that... when we do then i'd say its worth paying 1000+ for one of these devices.

      You can also get m.2 eGPUs if thunderbolt doesn't provide enough bandwidth for what you need to use it for but from my experience, a Razer Core X+3070 is good enough to run games at max settings/1440p
