  • The Velez lightweight jacket from Paramo is their lightest full-bore waterproof jacket. Fans of Paramo will be familiar with the Paramo Lightweight Velez smock, but this is a totally new jacket, still keeping in the light weight vain. Its a very different jacket to the smock, incorporating the relatively new honeycomb pump liner throughout the jacket, (with a small amount of standard weight in strategic areas).
    The jacket is probably the most breathable waterproof we have seen, with some great venting options. Aimed at anyone who is going to engage in any high energy outdoor sports that needs to stay dry, from climbers to mountain bikers. It was designed with climbers in mind and it proved a great climbing companion in testing. However, it was also a great walking jacket too, with great warmer weather mountaineering possibilities.
    The brighter colours would suit mountain bikers very well and the vents would prove versatile on the hill trails. A great addition to the Paramo Directional Clothing range, and it will no doubt turn into another classic design.

    Thanks a lot for the review. Really helped me decide upon which Paramo I want to get. Was always a little concerned in the past that they were too 'hillwalky' and not climbing and more high intensity sport based jackets. This seems to now be covered by this jacket. Just got to find somewhere where a student can afford it :)

      Hi Philip, its a great jacket and fulfils many roles. Paramo is an investment, like all good quality kit. If used and not abused it will last for years and give you good service. Enjoy your outdoors time, Andy

      Indeed. I hope I will be able to use it well for a long time.

    As this is the 'light' version, do you find that in wet conditions water is forced through under the pressure of backpack straps and padding pushing against the jacket? It seems the non-light version has reinforced extra layers of the directional material to combat this, but I'm not sure if it's a 'real' issue?

      I’ve never noticed this in practice and I’ve used it many times with heavy packs 🤔 I always maintain my gear, and my Paramos are looked after and this jacket is only used for mountain trips 🏔️☺️🌀

    Are they silent or loud when they rub? Also, is nicwax really nontoxic

    • @WildcraftBritain

      Hi, it’s the quietest waterproof I have owned ☺️ it’s got the lighter-weight fabric in the outer, which cuts down on the noise (not that the standard weight fabric is noisy compared with a hard shell) 👍🏻 as for non-toxic, Paramo is the most environmentally friendly clothing brand I am aware off and check the entire supply chain to make sure they are compliant with their standards, but I have seen no independent lab reports on toxicity ☺️ they where PFC free before that was a thing and I trust them above all else ☺️ Enjoy your outdoors time, Andy 🏕⛰🌀

    Thank you for your review. I recently bought an llbean raincoat and paid close to 300+. Unfortunately I was completely let down after our first some what heavy rain yesterday. Ended up returning it and dove deep into learning about what makes a good raincoat, good. And that’s how I’ve ended up here with Paramo. Wish they had them in stores in the U.S but haven’t been able to find them.
    Now I’m stuck between what coat to get. I’m also nowhere near as adventurous but would like a jacket that withstands the rain (nikwax), let’s me wear a hoodie underneath, and is good for the cold too. But also good all around.
    We’re starting spring and getting hit with spring showers here and there so there’s that and it won’t be as cold. Would getting the Velez adventure smock or Velez jacket be overkill? Or is there any other lower tier paramo coat you’d recommend that also has Nikwax. (I’m a runner so the breathability is pretty important)
    I wouldn’t mind spending that much because I see this coat as an incredible investment. Thank you!

      Hi Monty- not come across the brand you mention, but that sounds disappointing for the price. There are a number of firms trading on past glories or are really fashion brands in disguise, so its a difficult one!
      Its hard to know what to recommend, but my present favourite Paramo is this jacket, with the Enduro Windproof over the top if needed, (will do a dedicated review at some point). It makes a really flexible system that covers all the conditions you might face in the UK. Its the most breathable and light waterproof they do, with plenty of venting options, so its relevant for running in cold conditions.
      And I agree, jackets, and all key outdoor gear, should be seen as an investment and sadly the consumer seems obsessed with a race to the bottom and are all to willing to accept false promises on the vain hope of a bargain! Buy cheep buy twice is true, but mountain gear can save your life so in that sense its even more serious when buying for outdoor adventures. Good luck with your search and thanks for your input.
      Enjoy your outdoors time, Andy

    which do you like better the Velez or Enduro and why??

    • @WildcraftBritain
      @WildcraftBritain  2 года назад

      Greeting to Texas from Yorkshire 😄 I own both- (am assuming you mean the Enduro jacket not wind proof), the Enduro jacket is basically an up-specked Alta 3, so I would go Velez/Enduro combo 🤔 on their own, depends on your expected temperature requirements- colder, then Emduro, mixed/warmer Velez- and what you plan to do in it- higher energy Velez, harder use, (eg long backpacking trips), Enduro 👍🏻☺️

    • @WildcraftBritain
      @WildcraftBritain  4 года назад

      Bereit18 the Velez is the jacket for summer- for a waterproof- add an enduro windproof and you’ve got a winter jacket and a real light mountain windproof that is useful for showers 👍🏻 there’s nothing in their current range for a summer walking trouser imo- Rab, for example do better- however, the Cascada trousers are amazing, but not for hot weather ❄️ hope that helps ☺️ Enjoy your outdoors time, Andy

    I'm very tempted to consider this as a main waterproof as opposed to relying on a Gore-Tex shell but I'm wondering how the zips will hold up as they don't look waterproof. I'm fully aware of the different function of directionality as opposed to a 'breathable' membrane but would you consider this worth as a go to year round waterproof in the south west of the UK?

    • @WildcraftBritain
      @WildcraftBritain  8 лет назад +1

      Hi Hugh, My brother recently went to Wales with his mountain rescue buddies. They walked Trifan it rained most of the day and his upper body stayed dry, he was impressed. I have never had a problem with Paramo zips, the internal storm flap is more about breathability and warmth than water. I would say it would be good year round in the area you describe, as it should be light enough for the warmer wet days, but with insulation under, it should stand the winter well. In wind blown, heavy, all day rain I have yet to find a waterproof that keeps me dry! There's just too many holes and moisture from me as well. Nevertheless, my Paramo have proved the best so far, in all conditions. The thing I find with Paramo jackets, is that I want to ware them, as oppose to have to ware them. Hope this helps. Enjoy your outdoors time, Andy.

      Thanks Andy, I've always been tempted by a Paramo jacket and now I'm finally in the position to be able to afford one so I might just go for it. I gotta agree with you on the fact no jacket will keep you 100% dry, I've always thought of it as managing moisture inside your layers; which Gore-Tex doesn't deal well with in my experience. Cheers

    • @WildcraftBritain
      @WildcraftBritain  8 лет назад +2

      The main problem with Gore-tex is it is not designed for this country, (as far as my memory goes, it was initially designed for indwelling medical devices), in that its performance is greatly reduced in humid atmosphere's, (such as in the UK, in 90% humidity it can only achieve 10% of its available breath-ability). Paramo can move liquid water, so while it is still hampered by humidity, its not as badly effected. It's odd stuff, but normally when you switch, you don't go back.

    So this or the Alta 3 that is the question!? ... From what I can see these jackets are very similar the Alta 3 being slightly longer and cost £30ish more?!

    • @WildcraftBritain
      @WildcraftBritain  8 лет назад +1

      They are fairly different jackets TBH, for Paramo. I have discussed this with another commenter on the Enduro thread and here. The Alta 3 and velez have many design detail differences, for example the Alta hood is not designed to take a helmet and it has many more pockets, the Alta has standard weight outer fabric throughout, etc.

  • @PatrickHutton
    @PatrickHutton 8 лет назад

    Would this jacket be okay over normal clothes if going down to the pub etc? Also would it go well with the Paramo Katmai Shirt underneath in warmer weather when wet?

    • @WildcraftBritain
      @WildcraftBritain  8 лет назад +2

      Asking my advice on fashion is dangerous! I would ware it to go out, I think its a smart jacket, but my wife may disagree! I'm an outdoorsman, you take me as you find me ;P
      If its the polyester shirt, then it would be a good mix in wet, warm weather. The cotton version should be OK too. The jacket is probably the most breathable I have ever used, so its never going to be the bottle neck in moisture management, (for a water proof anyway). Enjoy your outdoors time, Andy

      Andy lastly how good an insulator is it? Is it warm enough for standing around outside during winter in London or going for a reasonably brisk walk this time of year, or in mid winter? Or would an Alta 3 be a safer bet?

    • @WildcraftBritain
      @WildcraftBritain  8 лет назад +1

      The Alta 3 is a warmer jacket, and so is a much safer bet for what you have described. The Velez is the least insulating Paramo waterproof I am aware of, (its the most "shell" like jacket that Paramo produces). You would need more mid layers for insulation than you would with an Alta, that said, the Velez is more user friendly in the warmer months. I run hot, so used little under the Alta in the Alps, so giving advice on wether you will be warm or not is almost impossible, as we are all so different! I have a climbing buddy that will ware thick winter insulation when I'm in a paramo only, (when doing the same activity). Its a real hard choice between the jackets, but gun to the head, I'd probably go with an Alta, but its a tough choice ;P

    • @PatrickHutton

    • @WildcraftBritain
      @WildcraftBritain  3 года назад

      Hi Rob 😄 yes it would, very much so 👍🏻 I presently keep mine for mountain use only (I always have a mountain jacket reserved so I know it’s in top condition for the harder walking I do). Add an Enduro wind proof and you have an all seasons combo for any conditions 🌧❄️ it does use the lighter weight fabric, which i have found durable in use, but it might not stand up to dogs jumping up on it as well as the standard weight 🤔 my boys don’t do that, but I know it can be an issue with some dogs 🐶 The Alta 3 would be another option- it’s warmer in winter but then again in summer also 😊 Enjoy your outdoors time, Andy 🏔⛺️🌀
