Not only WW84, but also movie like Dune, The Sucide Squad and The Matrix 4 will all be released for streaming bypassing the theatrical window. Do you believe this is the proverbial nail in the coffin for theaters? And why do you think the new Batman wasn't on this list? Thanks!

Sadly, I was predicting something like this would happen. This sucks. I really don't want the theater experience to go away because going to the cinema is one of those things that helps take my mind off of the negative shit going on in the real world, and to hear that it might potentially go out of business thanks to the damage left on our society by the pandemic just makes me feel sad.

I think the pandemic only accelerated things. The technology has been available for a while and while the movie theaters were suppressing competition by banding together to enforce the theatrical window sooner or later that was going to fail.
Its not like all movie theaters will dissappear maybe less and smaller and maybe making more effort to be clean and quiet.

I think there is a misconception on Disney+. Yes, we adults love Mandalorian and many of the upcoming shows. But I think most people subscribe to D+ because it allows them to put their kids in front of the telly with an ease of mind no other streamer can give them. D+ very efficiently turns the name Disney into money, not because of the content, but because of the mindset it conveys. And kids love it. They have no problem watching Frozen three-times in a row. The mature shows then add to this and give the adults (who pay the monthly fee) an added incentive to sign-up. (Or rather the other way-round: we want to watch Mandalorian and the benefit 'for our kids' - which, in reality, is mostly our own benefit - makes it an overall good - and smart - thing to sign up). There is a reason why Disney puts many shows not on D+ but on Hulu, and why they will introduce an additional service (Star) next year, so not to fumble with these dynamics.

    • @Ahturos
      @Ahturos 3 года назад +1

Yeah, we will see how much work Disney actually put in for other countries. The content have to appel to them too. Strangest thing I heard was that a show can be viewed in American Disney+ with language from Sweden. But in Sweden they are not availalbe. Some people are getting impatient for old content actually, people who wants to be nostalgic.

@@Ahturos A D+ account works all over the world, but you only get the content that is licensed for the region you are in at the moment. All the languages and subtitles that are attached to a movie or episode can be watched anywhere. (which is smart, because there are many non-native speakers i.e. in the US, who now can access content in their mother tongue.)
I assume much of the older content will be added over time, but for now is still stuck in license deals with other platforms or broadcasters in various countries.

Theaters won't go anywhere, just like arcades haven't gone anywhere. Granted, arcades have been reduced, but when you go to an arcade in 2019 they have restaurants, bars, modern video games against classic cabinets, merch, it's a multimedia venue and that's how they thrive. That's what theaters need to do.
Now, people like us, people who won't get on the phone or talk during movies or juul in the theatre can still go to theaters to see Dune or Matrix or the cinematic masterpiece coming up known as Tom and Jerry, when they drop in theaters, while the slobs who talk the whole time or get on their phone or whatever might be can stay at home. Or, someone on a strict budget can still go see the highly anticipated The Suicide Squad on the big screen but this Dune film? Hmm, I don't know much about that one, not sure if I'll like it, so instead of wasting 30 bucks on tickets, snacks, etc to go out, I can try it at home to see if I like it. Maybe if I like it enough, I'll go see it again in the cinema once its off of HBOMax. Sure, theaters may take a hit, but there are positives to this situation and I would appreciate it if it's talked about a little more, like the guys on Double Toasted did

    • @chem.4919

The idea of theaters going the way of the arcade is a bad sign. I grew up in the 80s and remember having several arcades within two miles of my home. Now there isn't a single true arcade near me. Sure there are bars and restaurants that offer the "arcade experience" but they aren't what I grew up with. They aren't the place where kids could hang out after school or on the weekends. I fear the same will happen to movie theatres. They'll be smaller, possibly more upscale but lose the mass appeal they once had.

This whole thing is absurd. AFAIK, Movie theaters are not, repeat NOT going anywhere. Throughout the decades, the theatrical experience, has had hard times; like when during the post war era when the television revolution caused a SIGIFICANT drop in movie attendance, and some of the old movie palaces that ran cartoons and newsreels before the film had to close, but did
the theaters dissapear altogether, not they did not. So, I have ever reason to believe the theaters WILL bounce back stronger than ever before, as had happened in the past.

I think the only thing left for theater owners to do is develop the hell out of those 3D or 4D or maybe even 5D movie technologies...you know, just make the theater experience a unique, special, and somewhat premium experience for people, and try everything they can to add some significant extra value to the movie-viewing experience. That's the only thing I can think of. Maybe James Cameron is thinking about that in terms of the future avatar movies. If everything is on the stream services, what about those future avatar movies that claim to utilize the latest 3D technologies? Can they support that on the stream platforms?

Even 2-3 months ago, you were saying people like me were crazy saying 'This would hasten the death of theatres and they would simply move to streaming faster because why keep the middleman that's losing attendance and pricing themselves out of business in regions?' because "The studios NEED the theatres to make all these billions they make to make films and all" - even though back in June and really, April/May some of us knew people weren't going to do what they were told, and that this was going to drag on this long, and force the studio's to release some things if not all to streaming which was the obvious long term plan, and was going to be hastened because yeah - they own the content unlike Netflix. RMB had a far more generous timeline than me at 10 years I figured the original plan at 5 years now accelerated to within the next year or two.

I’m scared for Movies in general.
If a studio releases 10 movies in 2020, all of them go to streaming, and make 10 Million against 100 Million dollar budgets, only to be called “a success”
It’s only a matter of time before the bombing of entire release slates forces studios to make budget cuts, people lose jobs, and movies just stop being made, because the amount of Money they have to pay the lead actor alone will exceed how much the movie is even going to make.

Nope. Even if they make just half the money they did before, at the end of the 2021 if they stop releasing movies to HBO Max all those subscribers they sacrificed to gain will leave. And people will be less likely to go to the theaters to see WB movies since they're used to getting them at home without the ticket price. WB is locked into this now. I don't think they'll be able to back out in 2022. Plus if theaters close down in 2021 which they likely will, there still may be no open theaters to release to in 2022 anyway. If disney keeps theaters alive through 2021 MAYBE WB can back out, but I think disney will pivot to D+

Even if only half of the people (say about 30 million) that would have gone to watch those movies at the theater subscribed to HBOMax for the year that would generate a monthly income of about $450 million, probably similar to the studios share of an $800 million box office (if HBOMAX was available world wide).
If, in future, the only way to watch movies produced by a studio, is to stream them on the platform of the studio, most if not all of the people that would have gone to the theater will end up subscribing to the platform, generating a similar or perhaps a better profit for the studios.

Honestly it’s so hard. For me, because studios are finding ways to make movies and then release them to make money, we’re keeping the film industry alive. With movie sets taking precautions, the only issue was getting the movies out instead of sitting on a shelf, delaying or even scrapping projects as a whole cuz theaters aren’t open or people don’t feel safe going to a theater yet. So films live, but at the cost of movie theaters. If studios just sat on all of the projects already paid for and either in production or already wrapped up, they’d go bankrupt, and theaters wouldn’t have any news movies to show. But now studios and distributors are finding ways to make money on their projects, and theaters will die as a result. It’s the future, it’s change, and it sucks, but I’d rather have studios be able to make and release their movies than save the movies for theaters and go bankrupt in the process.

If a streaming show doesn’t meet its expected viewership target they can forego expensive final completion of VFX, and other shots, as opposed to completion in toto. Producers/editors will need to have different edits, economical to full budget.

This will help, but they will have to add to it to keep subscribers (which lends credence to John's comment on this idea will continue). Disney has a huge library of legacy material to draw from along with two entities- Star Wars and Marvel- that have volumes of stories waiting to be told as well as plenty of vested fans waiting for those stories. I don't see HBO keeping the interest up even with the 17 movies coming straight there. Especially since the moves range in genre's like they do. No one wants to see all 17 of the movies that will be released by WB.

Btw John Disney and Warner bros still have to pay licensing fees for their own content because they have to pay royalties. For example Warner Bros owns shows like the Big Bang Theory and Friends but they still had to pay billions in licensing fees because the actors and creators are owed royalties. Netflix on the other hand doesn’t pay royalties for their original content so it kind of evens out.

Movie theaters are not dead John far from dead just because this is HBO max thing happening with WB movies does not mean they are dead are you not even looking internationally at other countries and how movie theaters impact enjoyment and the local economy there? No you haven't you need to look at those factors before you say something like this. this only impacts America not the rest of the world because HBO max is only in America it's not like netflix where it's available everywhere in the world same with Disney plus only available in America

In the current situation I think it is a smart move, there are no theaters, there is a big demand for new movies, they have a lot of movies ready to get out, and they can promote their streaming service and push it to the top and don't let Netflix be the only place to get new movies.
They have new projects that are on the calendar and every movie that they don't lunch out takes back all the other productions.
I feel bad for the theaters but when this pandemic be behind us they will work like before and the movies will be back in theaters.
The real winners are the viewers.
I want to watch new movis!

WB needs to get HBO Max on Roku soon and accelerate the worldwide rollout of the service like Disney+. If they do both of those things, 2021 will have huge growth for them.

In the near future every movie studio big and small will need to have a streaming service. A24, Lionsgate, etc.. this means there's going to be an opening for companies to start catering towards these studios and offer them to build the streaming service for them.

HBO Max really needs to solve their issues with Roku and the other streaming services which they are not on yet. I have a Roku and I have HBO Now but I don't plan to upgrade to HBO Max until I can watch it on my TV with my Roku. Until they solve that issue they will not get the number of subscribers that they could possibly get.

This comes down to money people! The only chance I see is not for the movie theater companies currently in business. But in 2022 when the current ones go under a new debt free company will come in and get the rent for those same theaters at a fraction of the price

We have a little more than half the subs (for now), however HBO/HBOMAX is $14.99 on average. Disney has undervalued their service in order to gain market share. Not only will their slate be released via streaming, the price will go up substantially.
