- Some raw, powerful, straight up garage-country from this incredible Navajo band out of New Mexico. They were one of the first "Chapterhouse Bands", a name coined by ethnomusicologist Kristina Jacobsen "to denote the first generation of Navajo bands to play popular music". They were apparently hugely popular in their day and according to the liner notes "were the number one band on the Window Rock Reservation", the seat of government and capital of the Navajo Nation. This is one of the greatest record I've found in a long time. This song was co-written and originally performed by Johnny Horton but The Fenders absolutely make it their own. Truly amazing.
Thank you so much , brought back a lot of memories. Only 20, still a youngin…but I distinctly remember hearing this track and mule train as a child heading to the mountains to get wood and coal with my dad. Wish I could get their tracks on my phone along with the navajo sundowners.
Thanks for sharing your memories of this song and band! Super cool. I hadn't heard of the Navajo Sundowners so thanks for mentioning them, I will check them out for sure.
