I’m pretty sure that people who study the Revolution are well aware of Morgan’s importance to the war effort.
Having been there, you don't begin to realize how important it is, until you consider everything that had went on before, like at Camden, or around the same time, like Kings Mountain, and then Cowpens. You have even a passing knowledge of that, you realize how important this battle was. Never-mind the two big battles that essentially shattered Cornwallis flank. Also, they really are surrounded by trees, it's almost unreal how boxed in Tarleton was forced to be.

Daniel Morgan outclassed the opposing British officers. He was the most original tactical thinker in that war, on any side. Morgan's Riflemen contributed greatly to the victory over Bourgoyne's forces near Saratoga. And, with the Battle of Cowpens, his hamstring Cornwalis, by decimating the British light infantry. The two most important victories in the war were really made possible by Daniel Morgan.
I wholeheartedly agree.
I would like to add that Morgan had the full confidence of another brilliant strategist. Nathaniel Greene. These two men basically saved the American cause.
The battles of Kings Mountain and Cowpens were as important to the Revolutionary War as D-Day and the Battle of the Bulge were to WW2. They totally turned the tide of the war.

@@henochparks cool 😎! I live close by to both and have been to both a few times,and as a SC native and history lover they are special to me too,although I don't know of any relatives that were there at either battle,but like most Americans I have plenty of relatives who served in combat.
I am one of the descendants of Gen. Daniel Morgan. I'm also a veteran of the war in Vietnam, a sailor in combat boots, as they say, and an unashamed patriot.

I, too count him as an ancestor, through my great great grandmother, Mary (nee) Morgan. Her husband's grandfather, Capt. Jacob Flowers, was also there, commanding North Carolina militia.

I was a student at Boston University, in 1957, and the history course included a presentation by the students, and I drew the Battle of Cowpens. I really appreciated the subject, because it was very straightforward and had a very good teaching point. So, my parents died, and I was forced to enlist in the army, sent to OCS, and in 1968 was a major in Vietnam investigating friendly fire incidents. The one I remember most vividly was a double envelopment which went wrong. Just like Cowpens they advanced from both flanks. Unlike Cowpens they had weapons of much greater range. They did not have a Fire Coordination Line between them. One side fired on the other side. One American was killed, some South Vietnamese were killed and wounded, no one knew what happened to the enemy. It was very hard to interview the participants. They omitted a simple map line, and had no centralized command and control. It was hard to write the "Lessons Learned." Lessons they should have learned before going to war.
Excellent. Daniel Morgan was definitely one of America's more colorful leaders in the war. He was brilliant in this battle. He kept control of the situation and delivered a devastating defeat to the British. In someway I think that this victory made the Colonials start believing they could win the war.
Daniel Morgan has quickly become one of my favorite Revolutionary war characters
Daniel Morgan as well as Francis Marion, among others, were the inspirations for Benjamin Martin in The Patriot.
The climactic battle at the end of the movie is loosely based on the Battle of Cowpens.

I walked this battlefield this summer, filmed it and put it on my channel. I walked each line. The genius of Daniel Morgan is evident when you walk that battlefield. The spacing is perfect. Tarleton took the bait. Morgan knew his man.

My wife actually grew up living on the Cowpens Battlefield before the Dept. Of Interior purchased their land for the Battleground park. The battle monument, at that time, was located in a wye where SC 11 and SC 110 intersected. She has pictures of her and her brother and cousins playing on the monument directly across the street from her house. She believes that she saw a red coat ghost in her bedroom when she was around 6 years old.
Very well done. The Battlefield is 6 miles from our home. Have been to numerous re enactments over the years, as well as fireworks on the 4th of July. About 30 years ago, my wife and I rode our horses there. Once there, we were respectful, no galloping or anything that would cause damage to the grass. It was very early and a fog was hanging over the field. We saw no other people. It wasn't hard to imagine being back in time to that historic day.

Been by the battlefield many times in my semi spent many nights at truck stop in Cowpens SC .feel very proud of this area of South Carolina and Thankful for our ancestors that gave their all to make America Free.

When my daughter was in high school, one evening I picked up her history book. I found that the book’s authors had dedicated one page and a half on the Vietnam war, its cause and how it affected our country.
Possibly, I didn’t express myself properly but I still believe that history isn’t taught properly and that eras of great importance are either glossed over or not taught at all.
@@Tedinator01 its extremely glossed over, in my highschool the history of the entirety of Roman Empire was condensed into a page and a half. Alot of "history" came down too which date is correct, never why and how or why was it important. People like this are doing gods work for people who had a crummy school.
Just American history covers 400 years, with some 4,000 years of world history, a few school years of a hour a day on the subject is going to be brief by nature. Of course there was also a excellent library for anyone who wanted to research the past. Still, a surprising amount of work was turned in based on movie's student's had watched because they failed to use the resources in the library in their research. You get out of education what you're willing to put into it.
I live in the same town where Nathaniel Greene lived and had his metal Forge where he made ships anchors and Cannons. Coventry RI. His Homestead is a museum and the factory is a luxury Apt Bldg...He also had health problems including
debilitating asthma and a severe leg length dicrepancy. His wife Catherine Littlefield Greene was Co-creator with Eli Whitney of the first Cotton Gin which lead to the beginning of the Industrial revolution in Pawtucket RI at Old Slaters Mill.. Which used water power to run the cotton gin..and make thread. It was the FIRST water powered mill in the Americas owned by Moses Brown...Slater an immigrant from England knew how to run textile machines and make thread from cotton.

My son and I were both military and when we walked Cowpens we both broke out laughing when we saw the terrain. Beautiful ambush.
When you see it, you know it’s the right place
The Cowpens battlefield is an excellent place to visit. The terrain and road are still as they were when the battle took place, and you can walk the ground and see it from both sides. It's remarkable how the depressions in the field provided cover and concealment to the American forces. The British marched into what appeared to be an open, empty field only to have troops begin popping up like gophers from unseen dens.
Another neat thing about Revolutionary War battlefields: They're small, no more than a few thousand combatants total on both sides. Great for studying small-unit tactics.
Those depressions in the field are sometimes called a "swag", or at least the bowl shaped ones.
Tarletons "no quarter" policy could have easily been used against his men on that day but Morgan was not that way from what I've read. The fact Tarleton lived through the war with his scalp could be viewed as "Gods Grace" for many Americans would've loved to see him swinging from a tree!

Went to this and other battlefields, following Cornwallis's progress, in the Carolinas. This loss deprived Cornwallis of his light infantry and then exhausted his army trying to bring Greene to battle, which he finally did at Guilford Courthouse with devastating consequence; next stop was Yorktown, where the final nail was hammered. One of only two recorded occasions when double envelopment had been executed. Daniel Morgan was the unsung hero of this battle that sparked the defeat of the British and birth of a new nation.
Well said young scholar. This battle is one of the ten or twenty most important battles in American history. Period.
Notice for the time whipping was a form of punishment, it was not just for slaves. They had no jails for 30 day confinement for the most part

I have recently been studying the Revolutionary war. Started with Patrick K. O'Donnell's "Washington's Immortals" & "The Indispensables". Great reads but its difficult to imagine the battles 'reading words' only. Loved the method used here to depict, in this case, 'Cowpens". Really helps to bring the battle alive.

Dr. Lindley Butler of Rockingham Community College gave a stirring lecture on this battle in his class when I attended. I hope he's still around to do so.
The similarities in battle lines between this battle and the Battle of Guilford Courthouse always interested me. Morgan was not on the Guilford battlefield, but Greene seemed to use the same plan he learned from Morgan. While the British did take the field and the Colonials were forced to retreat, the battle was so costly for the British they were unable to pursue.
While Cornwallis surrendered at Yorktown, and the French victory at the Battle of Chesapeake Bay was invaluable, I think it could be said that the Revolutionary War was won at King's Mountain, Cowpens and Guilford.
Just toured the battlefield. Love the depiction of the troop movements. It's details like this that bring history to life. Thanks.

Tarleton murdered many prisoners & civilians. Daniel Boone was also one of Braddock's Wagoneers. Afterwards, Boone went home and married 16 year old Rebecca, a neighbor. They were married 20 years when he founded Boonesborough, Ky. Dan & Rebecka 8 more kids, besides the two mentioned in the series, by then.
2:21) Ferguson was killed in the battle. His unit was disbanded.

Thanks for making this video! My fourth great grandfather and his brother (Simon and Peter Lauck) we’re part of Morgan’s personal bodyguards from the Raid on Quebec in 1775. Simon went on to become a renowned gunsmith. Peter owned the Red Lion Inn both in Winchester, VA.

Thank you for the great synopsis of the battle! I grew up nearby and as a small boy would run between the information panels to play the narration of the battle. Your video reminded me of that. Also got to do a staff ride with the army there many years later. This synopsis should be on the army's watch list for young leaders for sure!
I grew up fairly close( Easley) and used to love to go to Cowpens and Kings Mountain. Two of the most important battles in American history.

I am a descendant of Rev. Cuthbert (Cuddy) Stone. He was wounded in this battle and lay in the field for three days before he was found or so the story goes. I love American history but am just now learning about the Battle of Cowpens. I would love to take a trip to visit.
One of my favorite Rev War battles. It is still as pristine as it was in 1781. You can walk the battlefield from both Continental and British sides. Also close to King Mountain.
My mom is from Gaffney SC. We spent a lot of time there and visits to Cowpens and Kings Mountain were regular day trips. Fantastic to see this video.

one of the best choreographed battles by Daniel Morgan. It's a shame that Gibson didn't use this actual, amazing battle in "The Patriot" instead of trying to mash Guilford Courthouse and Cowpens and failing at both.
Oh, I agree, and did when I watched that movie the first time in the theaters as a young man; but that was a great movie too nonetheless.

A great explanation of this battle. I'm slowly getting more interested in the part of our history and these battles in the south are paramount to our eventual success.
This battle was as important to the Revolutionary War as Gettysburg was to the Civil War, or the Battle of the Bulge to WW2.

@@USGrant-rr2by I stand corrected but Morgan and Francis Marion were at the Battle of Cowpens, hence my confusion. That said, my ancestor fought with the Patriots at Cowpens. Morgan & Marion are easily confused: The American victory at the Battle of Cowpens was actually depicted in the movie “The Patriot.” In fact, Mel Gibson’s character, Benjamin Martin, is a composite portrayal of General Morgan and Francis Marion (the “Swamp Fox” and father of modern guerilla warfare).

Having said that, another subject you may want to research; there was a man named Rogers, that fought in the French&Indian war (1752-1759) that may have disputed your claim about Francis Marion being the father of modern guerilla warfare?

That battle scene from The Patriot basically left out a lot of details from the actual battle, but for the most part, it wasn't completely exaggerated. The Continentals set up the British Army and out flanked them. This was historically the last major battle before Yorktown.
Yorktown. Where half the troops, and all the funding, were French.

I have 4 ancestors who fought in the revolutionary war. All brothers, fought in cowpens. 2 were skirmishers. Been trying to learn more about them and the war itself

This sounds like the battle scene in "The Patriot"
It basically is. The key two characters portrayed by Mel Gibson and Jason Isaacs were fictional but do, in the broad strokes, fill in the overall flow of the battle. The most glaring difference is that the film portrays Morgan as a pessimist n Gibson suggests the tactics used. In real life, no such exchange was needed.
Great job. Excellent analysis and use of maps. I am currently studying all of the major battles of our war of Independence. I am now on the Brandywine. Next, Saratoga. Soon, the southern backcountry.
The Southern Backcountry is my favorite theater of operations in the Revolution.

My favorite Revolutionary War battle....have visited the Battlefield
A very fine and easily understandable explanation with key details and illustrated with straightforward thought in the animation. Many people do not understand the significance of the Battle of Cowpens as critical to ending the Revolutionary War. So much history is focused on the northern campaigns people would not even know the war was really finally won in the south except for the Yorktown surrender. Yes, my understanding was the two leaders you mentioned were the somewhat the basis for the Harry Burwell (Chris Cooper) and Col. Tavington (Jason Isaacs) characters along with Benjamin Martin (Mel Gibson) based on Francis Marion. Too bad we can't get actual historic movies financed for those that actually fought and established this nation. Let's hope that changes someday. The US Navy has an Aegis class missile frigate named after this battle. She’s capable of directing military engagements all over the world.
USS Cowpens (CG-63) is a Ticonderoga-class guided missile cruiser.

I took a tour on that tub when she lie at anchor off of Santa Barbara in the late 90’s, and I thought they claimed she was an Aegis class, but she’s equipped with the Aegis combat system, so score another one for my Lewy bodies! Either way, I thought it was pretty cool that she was named after a non-Navy battle...like the flat top of WWII, “The Mighty Moo.”

interesting anecdote about Morgan
How similar to the Zulu tactic of the "buffalo horns" in battle was the strategy used here at Cowpens. Full credit to the Scots Presbyterians who fought on the American side in the whole war,
If I can remember it correctly....I had read the article over 30 years ago.....the 2 3lbers had an interesting story. They were captured by the continentals at Saratoga.....then moved south with Gates. At Camden they were captured by the British. Taken again by the continentals at Cowpens......they moved to Guildford Courthouse with Greene. There they fell into British hands again. The article did not elaborate any further. But I would assume Yorktown brought about final ownership

The battles in the south don't get the attention that the northern battles do. High school history classes do a terrible job at teaching students about the impact of the revolution and unfortunately, most students couldn't care less.
Read up on Kings Mountain too. The southern theater is very fascinating. I think it had more of a “civil war” feel than the northern theater. I maybe wrong but that is my observation.
Read about Francis Marion. About 1/3 of the Battles in the Revolutionary War were fought in South Carolina.
i remember reading simple books about Morgan in our library in NC. I lived and grew up in swampland similar to what the swamp fox fought in. i did not realize so many battles were fought in SC. more than any other state. wow. i also did not realize morgan handed the brits such a loss. also i did not realize brits were dying of diseases the colonists were partially immune to. obviously the patriot was more about morgan than the swampfox. but really the men of the south turned that war around. all together. the mountain men and scots reacted to fergusons taunt in a similar way to old scotland. i had many friends in charlotte. amongst them were descendants of scots who fought at kings mountain and other battles. they still play the pipes there.

Camden come spend a day where Lord Cornwallis spent a bad year.i live in SC that is or was Camden's slogan. I have been to Cowpens and Kings Mountain and most others. It is fascinating to see these battlefields. I live next to a swamp used by a swamp used by Francis Marion, the Swamp Fox. The Revolutionary War Trail is worth a summer vacation or a early Spring or late Fall one

Several of my ancestors were at Cowpens and Kings Mountain! These two battles lead to the British defeat

My 7th great grand father was in that battle i am direct descendent from every oldest son. He was a South Carolina militia man

Thank you for this informative video. I’m also a descendant of Daniel Morgan, my mother’s maiden name is Morgan. Unless I missed it in the comments here, I’m a little surprised that no one mentioned his more famous cousin, Daniel Boone, who is a also distant cousin of mine. Daniel Boone’s mother, Sarah, was I believe Daniel Morgan’s aunt. Fort Morgan in Alabama is named after him, as well as other cities across the country.

I don't know if any of my Killen ancestors fought either in the Revolution or the War of 1812. I do know that an entire family clan migrated out of the Carolinas through Tennessee and down through West Alabama before crossing the Tombigbee River into East Mississippi after the Dancing Rabbit Treaty.
I do know that members of my Mom's ancestors fought with Lighthorse Harry Lee and some fought on both sides during the Civi War.

reminiscent of the Battle of Cannae. It has been questioned if the retreat of Hannibal's center fell back by accident or design. One youtuber has suggest the guys in the center came a bit forward to see their entire line and when attacked naturally stepped back under the pressure thus causing the double envelopment similar to Cowpens. no matter what the better the commander the better the chances he gives his men to win.
I'm a big fan of Hannibal. I would like to think it was by design. Please check out my other videos.
