The Heafy pickups are actually not supposed to be any different-sounding from the standard Moderns, Kyle. They've just got an extra single coil voicing and the gold squiggle, but Matt Heafy didn't want to mess with the tone of the Moderns for himself. As much as I love Matt Heafy and having owned his previous Epiphone for a year, there's no better metal singlecut guitar than an ESP/LTD Eclipse. And I've tried basically every one out there too with the exception of boutique manufacturers
Yes the Eclipse guitars are nice. I debated on a 7 string version of them as well. I really think this Epiphone shows how if Gibson as a whole can take attention to detail and emphasize its importance. They could clear up all the recent years of quality issues. The guitar I received is flawless. Only problem I have are the pickups. I personally dont like active pick ups and will most likely change these, eventually.
@Clint Brown yea man they are nice guitars no doubt. It's just that for me,the pickups keep me from wanting to pick one up. Although,I will say it is hard to ignore that at this price,it ginally comes with a hard case and locking tuners...two features that the previous model was definitely lacking. And I kinda agree on the pickups however I prefer EMGs over Fishman pickups but honestly I'd rather have Duncan's in it more than anything else. To me,Seymour Duncan's really can't be beat
You're comparing a 1000 $ guitar to Eclipses ? Aren't they like... 2500 $ ? It's like comparing a bugatti to a porsche, for a low price, you will have a hard time getting a better car than the porsche if you want to go fast, but of course if you're ready to pay 50 times the price, the bugatti will be way faster, is it worth it ? It depends what you're searching for but there is no comparison to be made.
I like it better on Custom-style Les Pauls. I have an Epi 1959 Standard, and I've never liked the headstock, TBH. To me, it just looks gigantic next to my Gibson. Kinda like a paddle, LOL.
Bigtime!! The older headstock looked like the corners were hacksawed by a 10yr old.. horrible design!! Now epiphones look much more pro level and respectable..
in this case, it's probably because Matt Heafy plays 6505+/6534+/Dual Rectifier amps, and the 5150/6505 and Recto were both originally based on the Soldano SLO circuit.
I also have a Prophecy, mine is a 2015 swirly black. I bought it used on Reverb and the previous owner installed Fishman moderns in place of the EMGs and locking tuners. I got a killer deal and it's a screamer.

Great vid as always. I will say in standard tuning where I felt the 5150 was not a good fit with the guitar. The mesa filled out the tone everywhere and it sounded massive. When you say the neck is the thinnest, is there a neck shape you could compare it to thickness wise from any of the other brands? I think for 1100 these are a bargain. The features and the fact that you get a hardcase included in that price really make it stand out compared to pretty much every other guitar in that price range.
I own this guitar. I enjoy it a lot. I do find the single coil pickup option to be very noisy, so I rarely use it. I do like keeping the bridge pickup in the active mode, and the neck pickup in the passive mode. Keeps the neck pickup a lot more smooth sounding, and when you combine the bridge and neck pickups in the middle position, it sounds super fat. Overall, it's a great guitar. I highly recommend it to anyone itching to buy it. Only thing I hated about it was that stupid plastic wrapped around the pickups. I don't know what the idea with that was lol.

Man I had the epiphone les Paul prophecy loaded with emg 85 81 and that guitar is a beast . I sold it to a friend and regret it but I still get to play it some. I think they are putting the fishmans in em now . That thing played better than any Gibson I had played before and I've played a few. Cool guitar, and love MKH/Trivium, but comparing it to the competition (mainly the ec1000) I think it falls short. EC1000s have the stainless extra jumbo frets you mentioned, which is the obvious plus. But they have better neck carves imo, and theres more variety of pickup options from various SDs, to various fishmans, to EMGs. There's also multiple bridge options from ToM to Floyds to Evertunes. And while I'm not someone who will turn my nose up at a guitar because of it's place of origin (I have a Chinese made Epi 335 that I love), the fact is the Korea QC is just waaaaaay more consistent. I know theres the artist tax and all, but all things considered I think this one is just too much when you can get an EC1000 for similar money.
I didn’t like the Fishmans at first but after dialling them in it made my EMGs sound like mud. Going between the 2 is crazy. Don’t get me wrong the EMGs still have their place but the Fishmans moved up a notch in my book. Cool vid man.

Emgs still rule but it's nice to have alternatives.. Thin necks can mean tuning instability too unless the neck has reinforcement like carbon or if it's a multi piece neck. If it's not reinforced I'll take a 50s-60s neck profile any day!!!
This is one of the signatures I would actually play a lot. Or a fan of other peoples setups, but it really has all the features I would play myself (although I haven’t tried fishmans, just 81/85’s) on my eclipse. It also doesn’t scream “somebody else’s” guitar.👍
That’s what I love about his models and with Jim Root’s. They’re super versatile and don’t scream Trivium or Slipknot so people who don’t know or don’t like those bands can still get it.
I didn't like the tone until you moved to the Rectifier and the EngL. 5150 sounded so muddy. Thanks for the review. It pretty much changed my mind on what I'm getting ready to buy.

The KM pick ups are really strong if you want low to mid output pick ups, and you are running them through high gain amps like 5150s, Mesa Rec's Engls, the MT15, and such. I've had a KM7 MKIII for a couple of years now. If you want high output pick ups the KM pick ups are not ideal.

The stainless, although adding a seriously extra bright tone, that tone can be annoying especially to sound man, but those stainless frets also hurt like a mother! When you play as a working musician, it doesn't get any better. The stainless fritz make you wind up leaving the guitar in the stand as a backup instead of having it as your main guitar.

Wow finally somebody said something about this. I've said it to people before and I'll say it again but obviously you know better...... The whole 55 point inspection thing from Sweetwater is clearly a marketing tool. Do people realize how much gear they get every single day and sell every single day? If somebody actually thinks that they took that guitar out of the box picked it up and actually spent some time with it inspecting it they are absolutely delusional. These companies simply do not have the time to do that it's impossible. And it's hilarious that it seems like 90% of the people that shop at Sweetwater actually believe that the 55 point inspection is real. I ordered an e n g l fireball 25 head... When it came to me it had things and Nick's on it and when I looked in the inside it was just bad... It looked like they just slapped it together and rushed it out of the factory. German engineering huh. Anyway I instantly returned it but that was the day I realized the 55 point inspection thing was clearly a marketing tool

Gibson never put maple top's on to get a brighter sound. That belongs to the realm of myths and legends they did it cause a thicker mahogany body is 1# more expensive and 2# maple (depends on the origin) is softer so the cutting tools meaning cnc bits etc stay sharper for longer wich is also a cost cutting thing.
I think if they added some luminlay side dots I would be all in. There are so many guitars around that price point that have those and stainless steel frets but it is still killer 🤘🔥🔥🤘

I bought an Epiphone LP Prophecy Jerry Cantrell a few days ago, I loved the guitar when I first tested it at the store.. once I brought it home and started trying new tunings and playing other things like solos then I got so disappointed...The intonation on that guitar was terrible, the guitar was in tune but would't sound right moving past the 12th fret.. that was a huge turn off.. I took it back to the store and tested a few other guitars, Charvels, Fenders and Gibsons.. I returned the Epiphone and got a Fender American instead because I already own a Gibson.. I'm never making this mistake again... run from Epiphones ppl.. save more money for a PRS or a Gibson, it's worth it.
Bruh… you said you changed your tunings…. Of course the thing is gonna need to be intonated. All you have to do is turn a screwdriver a couple of times. @@belligerentamateuryou should know that epiphone actually puts full thickness tops for years now even on cheaper models. Also I don't really believe it is the top wood that does something for the brightness. I attribute it more on the metal difference on gibson vs cheaper guitars. A lot of all mahogany guitars can be super bright. Remeber yamaha putting a brass block under the bridge of the sg2000? You can adjust a lot of things regardless of wood. Just check outetal differences on floyd rose bridges, ibanez edge ect. Tremolo blocks on strats. From cheap zinc to ultra expensive titanium. Now for a thin bright sounding guitar zinc can work better in principle. In the end...you chose but the amp cuts everything above 4khz and below 150 or higher way before the speakers. Helps like boosting and not oscillating and avoid a lot of problems inside the amp. What you hear as treble is overtones produced by the clipping on tubes from a lot of lower frequencies and are called harmonics, multiples of those frequencies. so something around 500 hz will produce 1000, 2000, 4000 hz after 4 gain stages. And it is something you won't like even for standard thrash playing...it js tiresome. Bottom line if a guitar works, leave it be!

Everyone will buy Epiphone if the headstock was the same. That Epiphone headstock is always in the way even these are now far better than before but still not enough!
There were times where this felt like a review and times where there's definitely felt like an advertisement. That locking tuner segment felt really forced lol.
I find it weird to make excuses for this guitar and blaming it on shipping. I have this same guitar. I love it! It sounds great, I also enjoy the neck carve. Super easy to play! 🤘🏼🤘🏼
I got mine a week ago and today I started removing protective plastics from pickups and noticed that pickups were wrong positions from the factory. Fluence Ceramic was in the neck (should be a bridge) and Fluence Alnico was a bridge (should be in neck). Have you faced the same issue or someone else...
@@juha7261 I haven’t had that issue. Mine was set up and gone through out of the box by my local guitar shop though. If there were any issues there’s a chance they took care of it before I got my hands on it.
Man I had the epiphone les Paul prophecy loaded with emg 85 81 and that guitar is a beast . I sold it to a friend and regret it but I still get to play it some. I think they are putting the fishmans in em now . That thing played better than any Gibson I had played before and I've played a few. Got a buddy that has a really old early les Paul and the prophecy was heavier in weight than the old Gibson and it shocked us so be ready for the weight it's pretty heavy guitar but also heavy sounding.

You're right. Both Prophecy models come with Fishman pickups these days. Flavor of the day for now.
Man the playability on the ECs really can't be beat.
I went to tried both and MKH fretboard feels better to my hand but like you said i'm abit skeptical about Chinese made. Still deciding which to buy ?😂

Nice! One correction, you can actually buy the Matt Heafy Fishmans separately.

And I know the Fishman pickups in the Red Tiger Prophecy are different than what's in the Origins models. Just curious if anyone has had a chance to compare those two models and I'm looking for any input. Also undecided on the color bc the ebony and bone white are both sweet looking! Prophecy or Origins? Really like the neck joint and pick-up's , lack of stainless frets is the only drawback.
I would have to differ with you there.

Would anyone please be able to tell me the weight of this guitar? I am interested in getting one but not if its too heavy (like my Gibson les paul) Thank you!
I've had guitars come in the shop after Sweetwater's "55 point inspection" and literally not work at all.

Can anyone tell me the weight? Are they any lighter? Old one was 9.7 lbs which is the only deal breaker
Is that different than the Prophecy Les Paul 😐 Sweetwater has the Prophecy Les Paul on sale for $699

That guitar probably should have been sold as a factory 2nd.
What is the width or depth of the body?
Glue on the neck...so much for the 55 point inspection...or does that mean they just look at it....does 55 point mean they fix what they find?...nope

What?

I never understood why Epiphone can't make the headstock exactly like Gibson? The Les Paul guitar body, there is no difference visually between a Gibson vs Epiphone, then why not the headstock?!
I have purchased guitars delivered to me when it was -20F and I don't open the box for 3 days, but the guitars didn't have this issue. Epiphone is putting out cheap chinese crap. For the cost, I think Schecter is the better guitar. That said, I love the neck dimensions. If Gibson put out a guitar with the same neck dimensions, I would drop 3k on it. I would also not accept the smallest flaw at that price point.

Same can be said of Gibson at various points in history. I had an ES-335 Epi that was flawless. Can't say that every single one off the line was the same way.
I'm a huge Les Paul guy, and as much as I'd like to buy one of the new Epi's, I just can't bring myself to buy a Chinese made guitar or amp. I even have a hard time with Indonesian or Mexican. Sorry but I can't support what goes on in those countries....
Absolutely right. I went right to the Sweetwater site to check this one out, saw that label on the back of the headstock and was like: NOPE.
I feel you. I'm a huge fan of Mexican made guitars though. I can't speak upon the newer fender models but upon the older fender models I see very little difference in quality between USA and Mexico. Also for the kind of music I play the Mexican electronics work better for me than the USA electronics. That's a pretty unpopular opinion. Anyway though when it comes to Gibson versus Epiphone I totally agree I guess I'm a head stock snob but I just can't fathom these prices on Chinese made guitars. It's actually quite comical and I feel like most people that are buying these instruments are suckers. Have you ever seen that Jackson Gus model?
