@@mckenziekate I have so many favorite books that I have read over throughout my life that it is hard to name one favorite of all time. Still so many books to conquer. But I can safely say that I did have a favorite book from 2023 since I can't really narrow things down...but I finally read The Name of The Wind by Patrick Rothfuss and it blew my mind. The tale, the details in the world, the adventure...I put this book off for so long and I was pleasantly surprised.

Passing and 100 Years of Solitude are on my TBR!
Plan to read The Hour of the Star from Clarice Lispector this month.
If I can suggest something that I think you'd enjoy, Villette by Charlotte Brontë! George Eliot and Virginia Woolf (who I remember you saying are some of your favorite writers) both said it's her masterpiece, and the book is about unrequited love, grief, what would now be called depression, and introspection -- all things that I think you'd enjoy reading about. :)
Thank you for lifting my mood today with this video, Mckenzie!

I hope you LOVE the hour of the star! It’s one of my all time favorite books.
Thank you for the recommendation! I do have Villette on my shelves and had honestly forgotten about it until this comment. I hadn’t heard much about Villette if I am being honest, I just picked it up because I wanted to own all of the Brontes, so this is really the first “review” I am hearing of it, so thank you thank you!

That's my first shout out, lol! I hope you like Titus Groan. Just know that it's not a fast paced book, and it is heavy handed, but in a very good way. It has some of the best imagery I've ever read. The first two books are excellent, the third one is still good, but that's about the time Mervyn Peake was being affected by his horrible illness. He actually wanted to write more books, but couldn't; so it doesn't end on the most satisfactory note, but it's still worth reading.
I tackled it at about 10 pages a day, which seems like I good pace given the density of it. You don't find many fantasy books with such dense writing. It's something that I appreciate.
Enjoyed the video! (And I'm almost finished with Infinite Jest.)

Ok this is like a dream haul right here. LOVE Jean Rhys' Wide Sargasso Sea, and Titus Groan was a great weird time haha.
Also, if you are looking for more slim French books, I have to say that there's an upcoming release of a beautiful new English translation of a French book coming out in a few weeks from Fern Books! (full disclosure, I am their intern, so there's the possibility of bias, but I do honestly think it's fire haha) Jakuta Alikavazovic's Like A Sky Inside, translated by the same person who did the 2023 International Booker longlisted book The Birthday Party

So for Jorge Amado, because Brazil speaks Portuguese, they pronounce the J so it’s like a soft j sound with the name George. Also I’m so excited that my spring break is here, I’m reading The Trial by Franz Kafka with a friend

Hi! I’m Brazilian and I loved to see Brazilians titles in your pile. I would like to recommend some of my favorites Brazilian classics books. Starting with the best, I would love to see you reading Machado de Assis, especially “Dom Casmurro” and “Memórias póstumas de Brás Cubas”. More of my favorites are: “Inocência - Visconde de Taunay”, “A moreninha - Joaquim Manuel de Macedo”, “Vidas secas - Graciliano Ramos”, “O cortiço - Aluísio de Azevedo”, can’t forget Clarisse Lispector, all of her work is espetacular, but to choose one, I would go with “ A hora da estrela”. And adding one that is not Brazilian, it’s Portuguese, but we read it a lot in Brazil, “O primo Basílio - Eça de Queiroz”. And yes Gabriela from Jorge Amado is an amazing choice, I hope you like it, about the Clarice’s title, since you already know her, you will probably love it . ❤
